The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of soil amendments for reducing soil compaction at heavy traffic area in golf course. Major results of this research are summarized at follows: 1. In the Lab. experiment, the porosity was improved significantly when the materials, such as peatmoss, charcoal, and tire chip mixtures were used respectively. Especially mixture of sand and 20% peatmoss showed higher effectiveness (10%) in porosity, comparing with ordinary sand. This soil mixture(sand 80%+peatmoss 20%) was observed the best in water retention, soil hardness and hydrauric conductivity. 2. In the greenhouse experiment, traffic pressure was given 7 times a day on several combination of mixture treatments to see the top dry weight. The soil mixture of 20% peatmoss showed the highest in the top dry weight. When the more traffic pressure(15 time/day) were given on the different treatment, the top dry weight was significantly reduced. However, the mixture of 20% peatmoss also had the least influence on this type of heavy traffic. 3. In the field experiment, the soil amendments were treated in traffic area f golf course, and observed at 30days, 60days, 90days, 120days after treatment. Visual turf quality(color), root length and soil compaction were compared to those of control. As a result, overall treatments with soil amendments were effective, which showed better turf quality and less soil compaction. 4. In the field test, physical characters of soil (such as soil hardness and hydrauric conductivity) in sand+tire chip+peatmoss(60:20:20, %, v/v) treatment was significantly improved. Also in the slow increasing of traffic, the soil compaction was the most effective in reducing soil hardness.
This study was carried out to survey green system, area, green slope, green turfgrass variety, green section, and particle size of green construction materials, and to investigate and evaluate the characteristics of Design and Construction in Korean golf course green for improving the quality of Korean golf course into that of the international golf course held international tournament. The results were as follows. 1. The greens of 129 Korean golf courses consisted of 2(two) green system and 1(one) green system. 2(two) green system was 50.8%, 1(one) green system was 40.7%, and 1+2 green system was 8.5% of them. 2. In 48 Korean golf courses, the green area of 2(two) green system was mostly 400~$600\m^2$(56.5%) and the green area of 1(one) green system was mostly 600~$800\m^2$(47.8%). In 48 Korean golf courses, 1.5~3% green slope appeared the highest frequency(50.0%) and the next was 3~5%(29.4%). 3. Penncross variety was the highest frequency(71.2%). The next was mixed variety (Penncross+Crenshaw, Penn A-1, Pennlinks, or Penneagle/SR 1020+SR 1019) and the frequency of mixed variety was 7.6%. 4. In 48 Korean golf courses, 70~80cm total thickness of green appeared the highest frequency(36.1%), 10~20cm thickness of green mixed sandy layer appeared the highest frequency(43.6%), and 10~20cm thickness of green coarse sandy layer appeared the highest frequency(55.6%). 0~10cm thickness of green gravel layer appeared the highest frequency(67.6%), 20~30cm thickness of green drain layer appeared the highest frequency(52.8%), and 20~30cm width of green drain layer appeared the highest frequency(44.4%). Below 1mm sand diameter used in green mixed sandy layer appeared the highest frequency(46.2%), below 2mm or over 2mm sand diameter used in green coarse sandy layer appeared the highest frequency(31.4%). 20~40mm coarse gravel diameter used in green gravel layer appeared the highest frequency(43.2%) and 0~20mm fine gravel diameter used in green gravel layer appeared the highest frequency(65.8%). 20~40mm gravel diameter used in green drain layer appeared the highest frequency(64.1%).
This study was carried out to investigate the offsets of pyroligneous acid on the growth of ‘Penncross’Creeping Bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) and to propose the practical use for ecologically responsive management in Korean golf courses. In the plots affected by 300, 500, and 800 times diluted pyroligneous acid, the turfgrass growth increment and the visual quality were measured at fixed periods. The data were subjected to paired samples T-test. The results summarized are as follows; 1) In leaf growth increment, density, and root spread depth, turfgrass affected by 500 and 800 times diluted pyroligneous acid were superior to the control continually. It was reliable in the statistics. Especially, 500 times diluted solutions was superior to the others. 2) In color, texture, uniformity, and recuperative strength, the visual quality of turfgrass affected by 500 and 800 times diluted pyroligneous acid were superior to the control continually. It was reliable in the statistics except the recuperative strength. Espe-cially, 500 times diluted solutions tended to be superior to the others. 3) There was no symptom of a disease in all plots. The existing management was thought to be suitable in this golf course. 500 and 800 times diluted pyroligneous acid were not thought to trigger or promote a disease, 4) After investigating the effect of pyroligneous acid on turfgrass growth, the soils of all plots were analyzed. In all plots, the chemical properties of the soils were not changed obviously. 5) Considering the results mentioned above, the practical use of 500 and 800 times diluted solutions might decrease the amount of nutrients and agricultural chemicals used in golf courses as well as promote turfgrass growth in golf courses.

Amino acids in the plant were intermediate metabolites which produced by uptake and assimilation of nitrogen and these extracts which gained by bio-chemical digestion from protein of plant or animal were a source of functional fertilizer. This study was conducted to evaluate effects of keratin amino acid fertilizer (KAF) gained from animal hair or hoof on changes of turfgrass quality and growth by investigating turf color index, chlorophyll index, shoot number, clipping yield, and nutrient content in the turfgrass tissue. Treatments were designed as follows; non-fertilizer (NF), compound fertilizer (CF), keratin amino acid fertilizer treatments [CF + KAF $0.26ml\;m^{-2}$ (CKF), CF + KAF $0.52ml\;m^{-2}$ (2CKF)], and only keratin amino acid fertilizer treatment (KF). Shoot number, clipping yield, and nitrogen uptake of KF were higher than those of CF. As compared with CF, soil chemical properties, turf color index, chlorophyll index and clipping yield of keratin amino acid fertilizer were not significant, but shoot number and uptake of N and K were increased significantly. These results show that the application of keratin amino acid fertilizer increased shoot number and growth by increased uptake of nitrogen and potassium.

In the current study, we examined the quality of surface water in ponds at two golf courses, located in southern (Country Club P) and eastern (Country Club B) areas of Korea respectively. Seasonal measurements were made of following physical parameters;pH, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, chloride, alkalinity, hardness, and nitrogen compounds [$NH_3$-N, $NO_2$-N, $NO_3$-N] and the concentrations of four heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) throughout the courses. The pH values were within the alkaline range (7.3 to 9.0), and the biological oxygen demand was generally between 0.5 and 3.1 mg/L. The alkalinity and hardness ranged from 19.1 to 68.5mg/L and 16.1 to 63.6 mg/L, respectively. Nitrogen as ammonium $(NH_3-N)$ was detected in all samples, and the samples had low concentrations of $NO_2-N$ and $NO_3-N$. Cd concentrations were relatively high (to 22.44 mg/L); the highest Cd concentration was observed in the pond in Country Club P. Other metal concentrations were low compared to the Quebec guidelines.
This study was conducted to find out definition, specification and characteristics of water-proof method for pond at golf courses that located in the mountain in Korea. Water-proof method of pond was selected by location, kind of soil, area, depth, cost, construction period and so on. 1. Soil Bentonite Sealing Liner(SBL) is to mix soil with a good quality bentonite. Then the mixed material was dressed on the bottom of pond. $\\$Merit of SBL is to purify the water and planting is possible. It can also reduce construction period and is economical. It's easy to find out the leak points. Demerit of SBL is expensive, if good quality soil is not in constructing site. Shape of pond edge is simple. 2. Ethylen Propylene Diene Monomer Sheef(EPDM-Sheet) makes use of sheet that resists to acid and alkaline. EPDM-Sheet spreads out as a mat on the pond for water-proof. Merit of EPDM-Sheet is to perfectly prove water and make a diverse shape of pond edge. Demerit of EPDM-Sheet is not friendly to environment. It needs drain system, air ventilation and long period of construction. It is also difficult to find out leaking points in this method. 3. Water proof of ESS-13 uses ESS-13 that is resin of vegetable matter and friendly to environment. To prove water of pond, ESS-13 is delicate with water in the pond. After that, Ess-13 in the water is expanded at pore space in the soil and cover with soil. ESS-13 can be to prove a leaking pond in golf course under business. ESS-13 is cheap and it needs short construction period. It does not need to switch the old water-proof system, additionally. It needs to move fishes to other place before utilizing ESS-13.
Creeping bentgrass (Agrosis stolonifera L.) is regarded to be the most widely used cool-season turf grass species grown on golf greens and fairways in temperate climates of North America. Creeping bentgrass is highly susceptible to the fungal disease 'dollar spot' caused by Sclerotinia homoeocarpa. Dollar spot is a foliar disease favored by conditions of high humidity, warm days, and cool nights. Studies using Aliette Signature (Fosetyl Aluminum formulated with a green pigment) mixed with another broad-spectrum fungicide do not always provide additional visual quality benefits compared to the fungicide alone. The exact mechanism for improved summer visual quality, when it occurs, is not known. Fertility management and environment likely contribute. The object of this study is to evaluate fungicide strategies for control of dollar spot and effect on visual quality during summer and on an L-93/G-2 creeping bentgrass green. Nine fungicide combinations were used for this study. Disease control and visual quality by fungicides was evaluated on an established G-2/L-93 creeping bentgrass green at 3-hole Sunshine Golf Course in Lemont, IL. All fungicide combination showed excellent dollar spot suppression except Fore throughout the study. Visual quality of greens by addition of Aliette Signature is enhanced when bentgrass growth is compromised and slow. Dollar spot levels in Fore plots increased to 30% on 14 August, and was no different than untreated plots. Unacceptable quality by Fore was due to lack of dollar spot control.
The growth characteristics of creeping bentgrass seeded in the seaside landfill golf course are as follows. 1. As a result of analysis on the chemical characteristics of soil mixture used for turfgrass ground in this experiment, soil pH was 7.9, which is somewhat higher than the creeping bentgrass reference value of pH 5.5∼6.5; T-N(%) was 0.02, which is proper for the reference value, and trace element too lacked. 2. The cultivar with the fastest water infiltration was Seaside II recorded as 226.2cm/sec, while that with the slowest water infiltration was Pennlinks recorded as 141.1 cm/hr which was too faster than the USGA water infiltration reference value of 15∼30cm/hr. For the surface hardness of turfgrass ground with different cultivars, no statistically significant variation was found between the Penncross grass and the Pennlinks recorded as 18.6mm and 19.1 mm, respectively. The soil penetration was the highest in Pennlinks recorded as 7.6kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and lowest in Penn A-1 as 6.1kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 3. As a result of evaluation on visual quality at the early stage of growth, Penncross showed the most excellent visual quality compared to the others. However, Penn A-1 showed the most excellent visual quality at a late stage of growth around Sep. 17, 2003, and it was also excellent in the evaluation of visual color. Seaside II showed higher density around the root and the longest root length and was highly resistant to salt compared to others, but the initial sprouting rate was not satisfied, and the visual quality in the summer season was inferior to others. 4. As a result of measurement of the traffic injury, Penncross showed the most tolerant to the traffic stress and Pennlinks showed the most susceptible.
Water shortage is becoming a serious problem of turfgrass management on sand green. Many superintendents in golf course in Korea have interested in use of irrigation of recycled water for turfgrass water management. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of greywater as an irrigation source on the growth and quality of creeping bentgrass green. Turfgrass was irrigated with tap water (TW) and greywater (GW), under with or without compound fertilizer application (nonfertilizer + TW, N-TW; non-fertilizer + GW, N-GW; fertilizer + TW, F-TW; fertilizer + GW, F-GW). The chemical properties of the green sand soil were not changed by irrigation. Turf color index, chlorophyll index, root length, clipping yield and nutrient uptake of GW treatment were similar to TW treatment. The growth and quality of turfgrass were more likely related with the fertilizer application than irrigation source or quality. These results indicated that GW could be used as alternative irrigation source on the sand greens of golf courses.
