Realization of Readout Circuit Through Integrator to Average MCT Photodetector Signals of Noncontact Chemical Agent Detector (비접촉 화학작용제 검출기의 MCT 광검출기를 위한 적분기 기반의 리드아웃 회로 구현)

  • A readout circuit for a mercury-cadmium-telluride (MCT)-amplified mid-wave infrared (IR) photodetector was realized and applied to noncontact chemical agent detectors based on a quantum cascade laser (QCL). The QCL emitted 250 times for each wavelength in 0.2-㎛ steps from 8 to 12 ㎛ with a frequency of 100 kHz and duty ratio of 10%. Because of the nonconstant QCL emission power during on-duty, averaging the photodetector signals is essential. Averaging can be performed in digital back-end processing through a high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) or in analog front-end processing through an integrator circuit. In addition, it should be considered that the 250 IR data points should be completely transferred to a PC during each wavelength tuning period of the QCL. To average and minimize the IR data, we designed a readout circuit using the analog front-end processing method. The proposed readout circuit consisted of a switched-capacitor integrator, voltage level shifter, relatively low-speed analog-to-digital converter, and micro-control unit. We confirmed that the MCT photodetector signal according to the QCL source can be accurately read and transferred to the PC without omissions.

  • Measuring the quality of city life (QCL) is important for city marketing given that QCL influences the city brand image and resident city relationship. Despite its importance, most previous measures of community well being were developed in the context of small towns, and limited attention has been given to a subjective measure of QCL in the context of a large city. This study develops and tests a subjective measure of quality of city life (QCL) in the context of a large metropolitan city. Quality of city life (QCL) refers to the degree of need satisfaction and feelings of happiness one experiences during the course of city life. The results from a survey of 507 residents from 25 major districts in Seoul indicate that the QCL measure has convergent and discriminate validity. The results also indicate that QCL has predictive validity in relation to satisfaction with city services, trust in the city government, word of mouth communication, and a sense of citizen pride. The managerial and policy implications of this study are discussed.

  • Recently as the Internet services become popular, the number of practical approaches to tackle social problems by using computers is increasing rapidly. One of the typical problems is the surveying system that handles a large amount of various data and thus requires much effort in time and manpower. As the necessity of the computerized surveying system is increased, there have been many tries to develop the surveying system based on the web or standalone software for public opinion collection, market research, and so on. In this paper, we design and implement a respondent based real-time surveying system using XML and QCL in order to efficiently process a various style of questionaries.

Optical Characteristics of Bolometric Terahertz Sensor (볼로미터형 테라헤르츠 센서의 광학적 특성 연구)

  • The optical characteristics of a terahertz (THz) antenna-coupled bolometer (ACB) detector were evaluated using a pulsed quantum cascade laser (QCL) and radiation blackbody sources. We investigated a method for measuring the responsivity and noise-equivalent power (NEP) of the THz detector using two different types of light sources. When using a QCL source with a frequency of 3 THz, the average responsivity of 24 devices was $1.44{\times}10^3V/W$ and the average NEP of those devices was $3.33{\times}10^{-9}W/{\surd}Hz$. The average responsivity and NEP as measured by blackbody source were $1.79{\times}10^5V/W$ and $6.51{\times}10^{-11}W/{\surd}Hz$, respectively, with the measured values varying depending on the light source. This was because the output power of each light source was different, with the laser source being driven by a pulse type wave and the blackbody source being driven by a continuous wave. The power input to the THz sensor was also different. Futhermore, the responsivity and NEP values measured using band pass filter (BPF) were similar to those measured when using only THz windows. It was found that ACB sensor responds normally in the THz region to both the laser and the blackbody source, and the method was confirmed to effectively evaluate the characteristics of the THz sensor.

Quantitative Analysis of Lower Nose and Upper Lip Asymmetry in Patient with Unilateral Cleft Lip Nose Deformity using 3D camera (3D camera를 이용한 일측성 구순비변형환자에서의 비하부 및 상구순 비대칭의 정량적 분석)

  • Purpose: Analysis of lower nose and upper lip asymmetry in patients with unilateral cleft lip nose deformity has been proceeded through direct measurement and photo analysis. But there are limitation in presenting real image because of its 2 dimensional trait. The authors analyzed such an asymmetry using 3D VECTRA system (Canfield, NJ, USA) in quantitative way. Methods: In 25 Patients with unilateral cleft lip nose deformity(male 12, female 13, age ranging from 4 to 19), patients with right side deformity were 10 and left were 15. Analysis of asymmetry was proceeded through 3D VECTRA system. After taking 3 dimensional photo, alar area, upper lip area, nostril perimeter, nostril area, Cupid's bow length, nostril height and nostril width were measured. Correlation coefficient and inter data quotients were calculated. Results: In nostril perimeter, maximal difference of cleft side and non - cleft side was 39.3%, asymmetric quotient Qasy = Qcl/Qncl(Qcl, value of cleft side; Qncl, value of non - cleft side) was ranged from 0.84 to 1.85 and in seven cases the length of cleft side was smaller. In nostril area, maximal difference was 69.6% and in 13 cases cleft side was smaller. In lower nasal area, maximal difference was 37.2% asymmetric quotient Qasy = Qcl/Qncl was ranged from 0.47 to 2.03 and in 20 cases cleft side was smaller. The correlation coefficients of nostril perimeter and area were 0.8345. Conclusion: Using 3D VECTRA system, the authors can measure nostril perimeter and lower nasal area that could not been measured with previous methods. Asymmetry of midface was analyzed through area comparison in quantitative way. Futhermore, post operative change can be measured in quantitative method.

  • For the simulation of active region in the quantum cascade lasers (QCL), we solved Schrodinger equation utilizing Runge-Kutta method and Shotting method. Wavelength, phonon resonant energy, and dipole matrix element were simulated with the variation of active region thickness. As a result of such simulation, it was suggested the tolerance range of epi-layer thickness error when 3-quantum well QCL structures are grown.

  • 중적외선 파장 영역대는 환경, 산업, 안전, 군수, 의료 등 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 넓은 응용성을 가지고 있다. 하지만, 중적외선 영역대의 광원은 기술개발의 어려움으로 인해 관련 산업이 크게 발달하지 못한 측면이 있다. 최근 들어 광원기술의 급속한 발전은 새로운 산업군 형성에 대한 기대를 증폭시키고 있다. 특히 중적외선 광원 중 가장 비약적인 발전을 이루고 있는 중적외선 QCL(Quantum Cascade Laser)은 미국의 Bell 연구소에서 1994년 처음으로 레이저 펄스 발진을 시현한 이후, 현재는 100mW 정도의 높은 광 세기를 갖는 소자가 제작되어 발표된 바 있고, 상온 연속 발진으로 20%의 WPE(Wall Plug Efficiency)를 갖는 소자가 제작되었다는 보고 또한 이루어지기도 하였다. 본고에서는 이처럼 급속하게 진행되고 있는 중적외선 레이저를 포함한 중적외선 광원의 기술동향과 아울러 태동하고 있는 중적외선 광원의 시장동향과 향후 전망에 대해 기술한다.

  • 최근의 광-나노 기술의 발전에 힘입어, 테라헤르츠(THz)파 분야에 있어서 기술혁신이 이루어지고 있다. THz 시간영역 분광법, THz-QCL, 서브-THz 무선 통신, 서브-THz전기신호 처리기술 및 THz 디바이스 등 다양한 THz파 관련 연구 성과가 폭넓게 전개되고 있어, 새로운 과학기술 분야의 하나로서, 또 신규산업의 개척을 짊어지는 것으로서 크게 기대되는 기술이다. 따라서 구체적인 장래 전망을 명확히 하기 위하여 THz 기술에 관한 기술동향을 분석하였다. 본 고에서는 기술동향 분석 결과를 토대로 THz파 기술의 현황과 전망에 관하여 설명하고, 차세대 핵심기술(core-technology) 창출을 목표로, THz 전자파, THz-photonics, THz-electronics 세 가지 연구분야의 총합적인 추진을 제안하고자 한다.

InGaAs/InAlAs Quantum Cascade Lasers Grown by using Metal-organic Vapor-phase Epitaxy

  • In this paper, InP-based InGaAs/InAlAs quantum cascade lasers(QCLs) providing nearly zero emission wavelength mismatch between the measured emission wavelength and the designed transition wavelength of QCLs is presented. The zero emission wavelength mismatch of QCLs influenced by both the accurate compositions and thicknesses of the low-pressure metal-organic vapor-phase epitaxy(MOVPE) grown InGaAs and InAlAs layers throughout the core and the abrupt composition transitions between InGaAs and InAlAs layers. The abrupt interfaces between InGaAs and InAlAs layers have been achieved throughout the core structure by means of controlling individually purged vent/run valves of a closed coupled showerhead reactor. In addition, maintaining substrate temperature constant during InGaAs/InAlAs core growth was a partial factor of uniformity improvement of QCLs. These approaches for reducing the possible discrepancies between the designed and MOVPE grown epitaxial structures could lead to improvement of QCL performance.

Relationship between Endotoxin Level of in Swine Farm Dust and Cellular Immunity of Husbandry Workers (돈사 분진 함유 내독소 수준과 축사 작업자들의 세포면역력간 상관성 분석)

  • Objectives: Endotoxins in dust generated in occupational settings is known to contribute to the occurrence of respiratory illness among workers. The relationship between the level of endotoxins in total dust or respirable particulates collected from swine farms and immunological markers related with respiratory allergy was evaluated among swine husbandry workers. Materials and Methods: Peripheral blood samples were collected from ten workers at ten swine farms at Gyeonggi province, Korea. Peripheral mononuclear cells were stimulated with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and ionomycin for 48 hours. The levels of various cytokines produced at culture supernatants were determined using a commercially available ELISA kit. The concentration of particulate matter($PM_{10}$) in the indoor air of the swine farms was evaluated using a PVC membrane filter and mini volume air sampler, and endotoxin levels in the dust were measured by Limulus Amebocyte Lysate Kinetic QCL method. Results: Levels of endotoxins in the total dust were categorized into high(geometric mean: $109.35EU/m^3$) and low concentrations (geometric mean: $0.95EU/m^3$) for five swine farms. Interleukin-4 levels were higher in the high endotoxin group than in the low endotoxin group, while interferon-${\gamma}$ levels were lower in the high endotoxin group than in the low endotoxin group. The ratio (interferon-${\gamma}$ to interleukin-4), indicating immunologic skewedness against allergic reactivities, was lower in the high endotoxin group($1.15{\pm}0.60$) than the low endotoxin group($3.09{\pm}2.38$). In addition, the level of interleukin-13, another cytokine contributing to the occurrence of allergic responses, was significantly higher in the at the high endotoxin group($1.12{\pm}0.37ng/m{\ell}$) than in the low endotoxin group($0.37{\pm}0.04ng/m{\ell}$). Hematologic assessment showed significantly lower cellularity in the number of total leukocytes, neutrophils, and eosinophils in the high endotoxin group than in the low endotoxin group. Conclusions: Even though a sufficient number of swine workers and farms were not investigated, this study generlly suggests that the immunological function of swine farm workers exposed to high levels of endotoxin could be modulated toward allergic reactivities.
