  • The resistance mechanism of anchor changes according to the types of anchor. Friction anchors are classified into tension and compression types. In this study, the characteristics and mechanism of pullout are analysed, and the design method of anchor and computer program for design are developed through compression test results of anchor body grout. The characteristics of compression anchor, compared with tension anchor, are summarized mainly as follows: (1) The effect of progressive failure of compression anchor body are much smaller than those of tension anchor during pullout of anchor: (2) The skin friction resistance is increased by Possion effect of grout (anchor body) during pullout of compression anchor.

  • The mechanism of pullout resistance of compression anchor is analysed. This anchor is developed through the field pullout tests and the laboratory element test. The compression anchor is characterized by decrease of progressive failure, simple site work, economy and durability compared with tension anchor. The characteristics of compression anchor, compared with tension anchor. mainly are summarized as follows ; (1) The plastic displacement of anchor body is very small during pullout of anchor. (2) Total anchor length decreases by the shortening of free length; (3) The progressive failure is decreased.; (4) The safety factor for pullout resistance increases with time after construction of anchor.

  • Jacket anchor was developed to increase the pullout resistance of general ground anchor in soft ground, and the mechanism of pullout resistance of jacket anchor was analyzed. Also, the ultimate bond stress of jacket anchor was estimated by ultimate resistance which is determined by field tests. Grout milk was injected into the jacket to make grout bulb of jacket anchor. The formation of grout bulb of jacket anchor increases the diameter of grout bulb, ground strength and confining pressure between anchor grout and soil. From the twelve field test results, it was observed that the pullout resistance of jacket anchor is 15.38~295.02%(average 83.53%) greater than that of general ground anchor, and plastic deformation of jacket anchor is 20.78~1,496.45%(average 288.78%) smaller than that of general ground anchor at the same load cycle. Especially, it was investigated that the increase of ultimate resistance over 200% and the reduction of plastic deformation over 600% was obtained in gravel layer. It means that the jacket anchor is superior to the general ground anchor in gravel layer. Finally, the ultimate bond stress was proposed to design jacket anchor.

  • The purpose of a rock bolt is to improve the mechanical performance of a jointed-rock mass. The performance of a rock bolt is generally evaluated by conducting a field pullout test, as the analytical or numerical evaluation of the rock bolt behavior still remains difficult. In this study, wide range of field test was performed to investigate the pullout resistance of rock bolts considering influencing factors such as the rock type, water bearing conditions, rock bolt type and length. The test results showed that the fully grouted rock bolt (FGR) in water-bearing rocks can be inadequate to provide the required pullout resistance, meanwhile the inflated steel tube rock bolt (ISR) satisfied required pullout resistance, even immediately after installation in water-bearing conditions. The ISR was particularly effective when the water inflow into a drill hole is greater than 1.0 l/min. The effect of the rock bolt failure on the tunnel stability was investigated through numerical analysis. The results show that the contribution of the rock bolt to the overall stability of the tunnel was not significant. However, it is found that the rock bolt can effectively reinforce the jointed-rock mass and reduce the possibility of local collapses of rocks, thus the importance of the rock bolt should not be overlooked, regardless of the overall stability.

  • Anchor system is widely used in construction works to support retaining structures. The compression anchor is characterized by excellent mechanism of pullout resistance, as well as less probability of progressive failure than a tension anchor. This paper presents the mechanical characteristics of a newly developed compression anchor(JR-2000). Field tests were performed to investigate characteristics of the pullout resistance of compression anchor.

  • Ground anchors are classified depending on the kind of stress the grout is subjected to. If the grout material is subjected to tension then it is classified as tension anchor while when the grout material is subjected to compression it is classified as compression anchor. In this study a composite type anchor that possesses both the tension and compression mechanism was developed. For field tests, strain gauges were installed inside the anchor body in soft: soil. From the strain monitoring results, pull-out resistance mechanism that possesses both tension and compression strain was seen.

  • In this study, the pullout tests are conducted to evaluate pullout resistance of steel strip reinforcement with transverse members. The test results are compared with theoretical equations and then the failure mechanism of transverse members is evaluated. The bearing resistance stress(${\sigma}^{\prime}_b$) of transverse members, which is applied pullout force at 50mm displacement, is closed from punching shear failure to general shear failure. The behavior by increment of a number of transverse members became closer to general shear failure. The behavior of transverse members at maximum pullout force, which is closed to general shear failure, is indicated that it is unrelated to normal stress and a number of transverse members. However, if the allowable displacement of reinforced soil wall is considered, it is impossible to apply in design. The test results are compared with bearing resistance evaluations using Prandtl's plastic theory and cylindrical cavity expansion theory. The analysis results are indicated that the bearing resistance by pullout tests is closed to predicted result by Prandtl's plastic theory, which are located between general shear failure and punching shear failure.

  • SI anchor means the soil improvement anchor. The ground for supporting anchor is improved by JSP, and as a result, SI anchor body has about 80cm in diameter. SI anchor shows high pullout resistance by the frictional force between anchor body and ground, and the bearing capacity of anchor body. Especially the frictional force increases very much with increasing diameter of anchor body improved by JBP. In this study, model and field tests are made to analyse the mechanism of pullout resistance of SI anchor. Through model tests for the SI anchor in air dried sandy ground, strain fields of ground around SI anchor surface are analysed by a photo analysis method using the latex membrane on the wall of soil tank. The results of field tests are analysed by the strains measured by 10 strain gages attached on the inner wall of specially designed PVC pipe embedded in anchor body, and the strains of anchor body are also measured in the model tests.

  • Soil nailing, as an effective stabilizing method for slopes and excavations, has been widely used worldwide. However, the interaction mechanism of a soil nail and the surrounding soil and its influential factors are not well understood. A pullout model using a hyperbolic shear stress-shear strain relationship is proposed to describe the load-deformation behavior of a cement grouted soil nail. Numerical analysis has been conducted to solve the governing equation and the distribution of tensile force along the nail length is investigated through a parametric study. The simulation results are highly consistent with laboratory soil nail pullout test results in the literature, indicating that the proposed model is efficient and accurate. Furthermore, the effects of key parameters, including normal stress, degree of saturation of soil, and surface roughness of soil nail, on the model parameters are studied in detail.

  • Depending on the underground load support mechanism, anchors are classified as friction anchors, bearing plate anchors and the recently developed combined friction-bearing plate anchors which combine the characteristics of both the friction and bearing plate type anchors. Even though numerous studies have been performed on bearing plate anchors, there were only few studies performed to observe the failure surface of bearing plate anchors. Furthermore most of the soil materials used on these tests were not real sand but carbon rods. In this study, sand was placed in the soil tank and laboratory tests were performed with bearing plate anchors installed with an embedment depth (H/h) ranging from 1~6. The variation in the pullout capacity and the behaviour of soil with the embedment depth (H/h) were observed. Ground deformation analysis program was also used to analyze soil displacement, zero extension direction, maximum shear strain contours. It was determined from the analysis of the results that at ultimate pullout resistance the deformation was 5 mm and the failure surface occurred in a narrower area when compared with results of the previous researches. It was also observed that the width of the fracture surface gradually becomes wider and expands up to the surface as the deformation increases from 10 mm to 15 mm.
