  • This study aims to clarify how the graffiti arts used in urban regeneration projects have come to possess the place specificity as public arts. For the research, the theoretical background of the place specificity of graffiti art was explored with the understanding of the concept of place specificity of public art, before comparing the difference of graffiti arts as public art applied to the urban regeneration projects, depending on their installation location and artist. In addition, the specificity of the place where graffiti artwork was installed and its significance in the context of urban regeneration project were explored. The case study is limited to graffiti arts installed in Bosan-dong, Dongducheon-si, where several urban regeneration projects have been pushed for since 2015. It was found from the analysis that the place specificity of individual art works is maximized when they are merged with cultural contents reflecting the history and place specificity of target cities, such as design, crafts, music and festivals, rather than with the place specificity of the works of individual artists. The result of this study suggests that when graffiti arts are fused with urban cultural contents as fusion design elements, their place specificity is maximized enough to elevate them to the level of public arts, and enable them to function as the media of urban regeneration.

  • This paper is about the utilization of public interaction design in terms of design convergence study. As there are different perspectives about public character in various academic fields, it is not simple to define the concept of it. In Korea, since 1960's, the public art which considered only about places has received more and more people's attention. But, there still remain disputes over the residents' participation and communication problems. It is more important to debate mainly on the value judgments of the public design considering artistic experience, ease, functionality, and utility in the interaction rather than a focus on user's experience. On the basis of this, it is suggested bench design which includes flower motif to access and utilize freely to necessary information and the bench design will be helpful to provoke interaction and design convergence in the era of new media technology.

  • This study investigates the examples of artistic intervention especially on the surface of architecture as a meeting place of art and architecture. Artistic intervention demonstrates the possibilities for the meaningful integration of arts into architectural spaces. This study summarizes the characteristics of artistic intervention on the surfaces of architectures as follow; first, the artistic intervention is applied to the broad ranges of designs including public art, architectural design and sign design that establish identities and unique characters to the spaces. Second, the artistic intervention on the surfaces is conducted by the participation of the various fields of artists, i.e. painters, installation artists, graphic designers and landscape designers. The artistic intervention is also conducted by individual collaboration between artists and architects as well as by the forms of public art of art-in-architecture program. Third, the artistic intervention on the surfaces is expressed using the complex combination of images, colors, patterns, and texts. They are applied to enhance the aesthetic and symbolic characters of buildings in public arts, to improve the visual characters of architectural design with graphics, colors, and patterns, as well as to increase communication skills and cognitive effects of sign design with letters and colors on walls and floor surfaces. Fourth, the artistic intervention is also applied on the surfaces to encourage people to communicate historic and symbolic meanings related to the locations and functions. Thus, graphics on the architectural surfaces could provide a public space, with which people could share common feeling on public arts. As a conclusion, the study finds that artistic intervention either as artworks or as elements of architectural design can not only enhance the aesthetic quality of architectural space but also expand the techniques of design representation. In addition, the artistic intervention can contribute to create a new realm of design where artists and architects work together to enrich our surroundings.
