  • As functions of public library has become diversified, proper environment color plan enhancing a supporting environment of user based on a function of public library should be achieved by utilizing space chromatics which is a psychological environmental factor. Therefore, public library's color environment of each space functions should be understood and the foundation of color plan enhancing supporting environment of user should also be established under the premise that public library color environment which supports integrated functions to every local residents by meeting functional roles of library. As functions of public library expands, this study has its purpose to analyze color environment characteristics by mainly focusing on library of Busan region to study color environment supporting function of each space. Through a literature research, function and role of color, environment color have considered, and through a preceding research analysis on public library's present condition analysis and tendency of library color preference, theoretical background on library color environment has deducted. By researching present condition of environment color application at 9 public libraries located at Busan, the environment color characteristics of library has deducted through an image adjective analysis using color system, coloration analysis, IRI(Image Research Institute) color image scale. This study can be provided as a reference data for environment color plan based on spatial function to enhance supporting environment of public library user, and it is expected to utilize in the library facility plan which has been diversified.

Monitoring and Risk Assessment of Pesticide Residues in Commercially Dried Vegetables

  • We tested for residual pesticide levels in dried vegetables in Seoul, Korea. A total of 100 samples of 13 different types of agricultural products were analyzed by a gas chromatography-nitrogen phosphate detector (GC-NPD), an electron capture detector (GC-${\mu}ECD$), a mass spectrometry detector (GC-MSD), and a high performance liquid chromatography- ultraviolet detector (HPLC-UV). We used multi-analysis methods to analyze for 253 different pesticide types. Among the selected agricultural products, residual pesticides were detected in 11 samples, of which 2 samples (2.0%) exceeded the Korea Maximum Residue limits (MRLs). We detected pesticide residue in 6 of 9 analyzed dried pepper leaves and 1 sample exceeded the Korea MRLs. Data obtained were then used for estimating the potential health risks associated with the exposures to these pesticides. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) range from 0.1% of the acceptable daily intake (ADI) for bifenthrin to 8.4% of the ADI for cadusafos. The most critical commodity is cadusafos in chwinamul, contributing 8.4% to the hazard index (HI). This results show that the detected pesticides could not be considered a serious public health problem. Nevertheless, an investigation into continuous monitoring is recommended.

  • To ensure the safety of products containing omega-3 fatty acids, twenty fish and algae oil omega-3 products available in a Gyeonggi Province, South Korea market were analyzed for eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) content, as well as for oxidative status. Of the tested products, 90% complied with the CODEX/FAO fish oil standards on a p-anisidine value (p-AV) limit of 20, and 80% complied with the CODEX/FAO fish oil standards on the TOTOX limit of 26, respectively. Fully 100% of the products complied with EPA/DHA content levels. In addition, 90% of the tested products met with a peroxide value (PV) limit of 10 meq/kg while 95% of products were within the a p-AV limit of 30. Also, 95% of the products had a calculated TOTOX value of 50, which is lower than the stringent limits used by the European and British Pharmacopeia and Australian authorities.

  • We investigated springs in Seoul in 2009 to know the change of water quality according to storage method of spring water, the concentration of chemical compounds and their correlation. Even spring water that originally satisfied national standard for drinking water could be exceeded national standard for drinking water by storage method such as storage bottle, temperature and period; especially used PET bottles could affect the increase of total colony counts. Therefore, spring water is desirable to be consumed on the spot, or to be stored in sterilized bottles in refrigerator rather than room temperature at home, and also to be consumed shortly not exceeding 24 hours. Total colony counts, coliform, yersinia, $F^-$, $Cl^-$, $NO_3^--N$, hardness, total Solids, pH, color and Al were exceeded national standard for drinking water at some springs. The result of correlation analysis shows that hardness and total solids, which are caused by several ionic compounds, had relatively high correlations with other chemical compounds.

  • This study was performed to establish the discrimination of the corpus albicans that were formed after normal parturition and abortion in Holstein, The corpus albicans were obtained from 504 cows and 506 heifers slaughtered in the Agricultural Cooperative's Livestock Products Joint Market of Seoul City from March 2007 to October 2007. The difference in a gross examination (morphology, fibrogenesis, deposit state, color, and size) among the fixtures that exist in their ovaries was investigated. All of the cows had corpus albicans in their ovaries: 423 cows (83.9%) had less than three corpus albicans, 81 (16.1%) had more than four. In the heifers, however, 463 (91.05%) had no corpus albicans, 39 (7.7%) had one, and four (0.8%) had more than two. In the types of corpus albicans 73.2% of the cows had oval-type, 14.4% had circular-shaped, 12.4% had irregular-type. In the aborted heifers, however, oval-type appeared in 88.6% and circular-shaped appeared in 11.4%, and no irregular-type was found. There was no significant difference in the fibrogenesis and size of corpus albicans between cows and aborted heifers. However, slight difference in the color of the corpus albicans was observed between two types. In conclusion, it is not easy to discriminate by gross examination of ovary between cows and aborted heifers in the slaughter house.

  • 2010년 5월 중 서울 약령시와 서울시내 대형마트에서 유통 중인 약용버섯 및 식용버섯류 16품목 92건 대상으로 중금속(비소, 카드뮴, 납, 수은) 모니터링을 실시하였다. 식품의약품안전청에서 고시한 생약의 잔류오염물질 허용기준 및 시험방법에 따라 실험하였으며, 유통 버섯류의 중금속 함유실태를 파악하고, 버섯의 안전성 기준 제정을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 본 실험을 실시하였다. 새송이버섯 등 생버섯 7종 15건에 대한 중금속 검사 결과 비소 0.01~0.26 mg/kg, 카드뮴 0~0.10 mg/kg, 납 0~0.03 mg/kg, 수은 0~0.007 mg/kg 으로 중금속 함유량이 낮았다. 상황버섯 등 11종 77건의 건조되어 식용 및 약용으로 사용되는 버섯류 중 노루궁뎅이버섯은 4건 중 2건(50.0 %)에서 카드뮴이 0.32~0.82 mg/kg으로 한약재 기준 대비 높게 검출되었으며, 상황버섯은 15건 중 5건(33 %)에서 카드뮴 0.58~0.85 mg/kg, 표고버섯은 9건 중 3건에서 카드뮴 0.42~0.74 mg/kg, 운지버섯 5건 중 1건(20.0 %)에서 1.66 mg/kg, 영지버섯 16건 중 2건(12.5%)에서 수은 0.415 mg/kg과 카드뮴 0.66 mg/kg이 분석되었다. 특히 아가리쿠스버섯은 10건 중 10건(100.0 %)에서 카드뮴(10건) 1.49~7.35 mg/kg, 수은(9건) 0.202~0.505 mg/kg으로 높은 유해중금속 함유량을 보이는 것으로 조사되었다.

  • Looking at the current status of beverages sold from vending machines in subway stations in Seoul, it was found that carbonated beverages accounted for the highest percentage of beverages on sale in vending machines, representing 36 % of all beverages sold. Survey respondents purchased carbonated drinks or sports drinks containing high levels of sugar to quench their thirst. Investigation of the sugar content of beverages frequently sold in vending machines showed that a serving of carbonated beverage contained an average of 30.4 g of sugar, or as much as 50.1 g of sugar (equivalent 10 to 17 cubes; 1 cube = 3 g of sugar). This amount corresponded, on average, with 60 % of the WHO recommended daily sugar intake (50 g). Surprisingly, with certain carbonated beverages, drinking a single can is equivalent to consuming the total recommended daily sugar intake of 50 g.

  • In recent years, consumers have become more interested in convenient lifestyles, leading to increased use of salted cabbages for preparation of kimchi. This study aimed to investigate the safety of heavy metals, pesticide residues, and foodborne pathogens in commercial salted cabbages in Seoul from August to November, 2014. The survey, which was conducted to determine whether or not salted cabbages were prepared under the highest sanitary conditions, showed that Seoulites are interested in purchasing hygienic and safe salted cabbages. The average amounts (range) of Pb and Cd found in 30 salted cabbage samples were 0.007 (0.000~0.063) mg/kg and 0.004 (0.000~0.012) mg/kg, respectively. The cabbages were analyzed for residues from 285 types of pesticides using the multiresidue method. Residues for pesticides were not detected. Major foodborne pathogens, specifically Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Listeria monocytogenes, Campylobacter jejuni, Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus, Clostridium perfringens and Norovirus, were also not detected.

Emission Characteristics of Odor Compounds from a Dyeing Wastewater Treatment Plant in an Industrial Complex Area in Daegu City (대구시 산업단지 염색폐수처리장의 악취발생 특성)

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the odor emission characteristics from a wastewater treatment plant in an industrial complex area in Daegu City. Methods: Odor samples were collected from March 2016 to December 2016 and were analyzed for specified offensive odor substances. The odor quotient and the odor contribution was calculated. Results: Ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, acetaldehyde, and toluene were detected in all samples for monitoring specified odor compounds. The result of contribution analysis is that hydrogen sulfide had the highest contribution in all processes, followed by acetaldehyde. Conclusion: The major components of odor can be determined by evaluating the degree of contribution to the odor intensity and the concentration of the individual odor component. To increase the effectiveness of odor reduction, rather than addressing high-concentration odor compounds, policies focused on materials with a high odor contribution are necessary.
