  • The ammonia decomposition reaction has been of increasing interest as a means of treating ammonia in flue gas in the presence of precious metal catalyst. Various catalysts, $Pt-Rh/Al_2O_3$, $Pt-Rh/TiO_2$, $Pt-Rh/ZrO_2$, $Pt-Pd/Al_2O_3$, $Pd-Rh/Al_2O_3$, $Pd-Rh/TiO_2$, $Pd-Rh/ZrO_2$, $Pt-Pd-Rh/Al_2O_3$, $Pd/Ga-Al_2O_3$, $Rh/Ga-Al_2O_3$, and Ru/Ga-$Al_2O_3$, were synthesized by using excess wet impregnation method. Using a homemade 1/4" reactor at $10,000{\sim}50,000hr^{-1}$ of space velocity in the presence of precious metal catalyst ammonia decomposition reactions were carried out to investigate the catalyst activity. The inlet ammonia concentration was maintained at 2,000 ppm, with an air balance. Both $T_{50}$ and $T_{90}$, defined as the temperatures where 50% and 90% of ammonia, respectively, are converted, decreased significantly when alumina-supported catalysts were applied. In terms of catalytic performance on the ammonia conversion in the presence of hydrogen sulfide, $Pt-Rh/Al_2O_3$ catalyst showed no effect on the poisoning caused by hydrogen sulfide. These results indicate that platinum-rhodium bimetallic catalyst is a useful catalyst for ammonia decomposition.

  • In this work, the conversion of crystalline cellulose into polyols in the presence of hydrogen was examined over noble metal (Pt, Ru, Ir, Rh, and Pd) catalysts supported on activated carbon. For comparison, Pt/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Pt/H-mordenite were also investigated. Several techniques: $N_2$ physisorption, X-ray diffraction(XRD), inductively-coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES), temperature-programmed reduction with $H_2$ ($H_2$-TPR) and CO chemisorption were employed to characterize the catalysts. The cellulose conversion was not strongly dependent on the types of the catalyst used. Pt/AC showed the highest yields to polyols among activated carbon-supported noble metal catalysts, viz. Pt/AC, Ru/AC, Ir/AC, Rh/AC and Pd/AC.

  • This work was carried out to improve the performance of anodic electrocatalysts in direct ethanol fuel cell(DEFC). PtRu and $Pt_5Ru_4M$(M= Ni, Sn, Mo and W) electrocatalysts were prepared by using a $NaBH_4$ reduction method. Alloy crystal structure and particle size of electrocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). The XRD analysis of the electrocatalysts revealed that the face-centered cubic(fcc) peaks shifted to slightly higher diffraction angles when third metals were added. Average size of the uniform particles was observed to be approximately $3{\sim}3.5\;nm$ from the TEM image. The electrochemical measurements were carried out in the solution 1M $H_2SO_4$ and 1M $C_2H_5OH$ at room temperature. Cyclic-voltammogram results showed that $Pt_5Ru_4W$ electrocatalyst exhibited much higher current density for ethanol oxidation of $2.73\;mA/cm^2$ than PtRu electrocatalyst of $0.73\;mA/cm^2$.

  • PtRu catalyst is most widely used as anode catalyst for a direct methanol fuel cell(DMFC). To promote the efficiency of the catalysts, it Is important to increase the triple phase boundary. In this study, we have tried to increase the triple phase boundaries in preparing electrocatalysts of the fuel cells, based on the process of grafting a proton-conducting agent onto the catalyst This grafted proton-conducting agent can act as an ionomer like Nafion, currently widely used ionomer. First, we have prepared the 80wt% PtRu/Ketjen Black electrocatalyst by an improved colloidal method. And, we have grafted methylsulfonate groups $(-CH_2SO_3H)$ into the catalyst as proton-conducting agents. As results of cyclic voltammety and single cell test of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), we can conclude that the activity of the grafted electrocatalysts is superior to that of conventional ones, in performance of DMFCs. For our further study, we will investigate the optimum ratio of catalyst/grafted proton conduct Ing agent with maximum performance of a DMFC.

  • The prohibitively high cost of Pt catalyst might be the biggest barrier for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) of which wide application is expected. Worldwide research efforts for the development of alternative to Pt oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst are made recently. One of the important considerations in the catalyst development is durability issue as well as economic aspect. From this point of view, platinum group metals (PGM) except Pt can be a candidate for replacing Pt catalyst because the material properties and the catalytic activity of PGM are expected to be similar to Pt. In contrast to Ir, Rh and Os to which not so much attention has been paid as an ORR catalyst, Pd that is most similar to Pt in terms of material properties and catalytic activity and Ru that is in the form of chalcogenide have been studied intensively. Activity comparison between non-Pt and Pt oxygen reduction catalysts by half cell test using RDE (rotating disk electrode) or PEMFC MEA (membrane electrode assembly) operation indicates that Pd-based catalysts show the most similar activity to Pt. In this paper we analyze the composition of PGM ORR catalyst in literature to promote the development of non-Pt ORR catalyst.

  • The study on the characteristics of nitrous oxide catalytic decomposition was carried out to utilize the nitrous oxide as a propellant. The Pt, Ir and Ru were synthesized to select a high performance catalyst for the nitrous oxide decomposition reaction. The respective catalyst precursors were loaded in the $Al_2O_3$ support using an wet impregnation method. The $N_2O$ conversion as a variation of space velocity and reaction temperature was measured using a tubular reactor. The catalyst loss was measured to evaluate the durability of catalysts after the reaction at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. The $N_2O$ conversion was increased at the decrease of space velocity and at the increase of temperature. The Ru/$Al_2O_3$ catalyst had the highest $N_2O$ conversion at low temperature and the best durability.

  • When reformer for fuel cell is used, CO in hydrogen gas leads to a seriously decreased membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance by catalyst poisoning. The effect of CO on performance of modified MEA by sputtering method is studied in this paper. The experimental results show that sputtered Pt and Ru thin film improve a single cell performance of MEA and sputtered metal thin film has a CO tolerance. The air injection process on anode show improved CO tolerance test result. Moreover, Pt, Ru and PtRu thin film by sputtering had influence on the CO tolerance with air injection process.

  • Sodium borohydride($NaBH_4$) known as the material of hydrogen generation and storage can produce the hydrogen via catalytic hydrolysis. This protide chemical could be used in the hydrogen supply system for residential and mobile fuel cells, and thus many researches and developments regarding to these chemicals and decomposition reactions have been implemented. We experimented the hydrolysis of $NaBH_4$ alkaline solution by metal oxide-supported PGM(platinum group metal) catalysts and measured the generation rate of hydrogen which is product of decomposition reaction. We compared oxides as catalyst supports, and the precious metals, Pt and Ru for the catalysts and studied the effects of amounts of catalyst added and $NaBH_4$ concentrations on the hydrogen generation rates and patterns.

  • The underpotential deposited Bi on Pt($Bi_{upd}/Pt$) anode for formic acid fuel cells (FAFCs) was developed using multi-layered preparation method for better electrocatalytic utilization of Pt. The electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) result indicated that $Bi_{upd}$ remains through the catalyst layer during stability test. In performance test, the multilayered $Bi_{upd}$ on Pt black showed superior performance by approximately 200 mV at current density of $150mA/cm^2$ compared with PtRu black anode catalyst. Based on preparation condition of $Bi_{upd}/Pt$ black, carbon supported $Bi_{upd}/Pt/C$ electrode was prepared and it showed enhanced performance and stability.
