  • Planar type micro catalytic combustible gas sensor was developed by using nano crystalline $SnO_2$ Pt thin film as micro heater was deposited by thermal evaporation method on the alumina substrate. The thickness of the Pt heater was around 160 nm. The sensor showed high reliability with prominent selectivity against various gases(Co, $C_3H_8,\;CH_4$) at low operating temperature($156^{\circ}C$). The sensor with nano crystalline $SnO_2$ showed higher sensitivity than that without nano crystalline $SnO_2$. This can be explained by more active adsorption and oxidation of hydrogen by nano crystalline $SnO_2$ particles. The present planar-type catalytic combustible hydrogen sensor with nano crystalline $SnO_2$ is a good candidate for detection of hydrogen leaks.

  • In this study, thin film gas sensor based on tin oxide was fabricated to examine its characteristics. Target gas is acetonitrile ($CH_3$CN) which is a blood simulant for the chemical warfare agent. Sensing materials are SnO$_2$ SnO$_2$/Pt, and Sn/Pt with thickness from 1000 to 3000 $\AA$. The sensor consists of a sensing electrode with inter-digit (IDT) type in front side and a heater in rear side. Resistance changes of sensing materials are monitored on real time basis using a data acquisition board with a 12-bit analog to digital converter. Sensitivities are measured at different operating temperatures also with different gas concentrations and film thickness. The high sensitivity is obtained for Sn (3000 $\AA$)/Pt (30 $\AA$) at 30$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 ppm. Response and recovery times were about 40 and 160 s, respectively. Repetition measurements showed very good results with $\pm$3% in full scale range.

  • New formation technique of metal oxide sensing film was proposed m this paper. Silicon wafer with Pt electrodes was used as a substrate for depositing metal Sn film. Metal Sn was deposited in the state of not continuous film but only island state. The samples were prepared to obtain the optimal condition of metal Sn deposition. The resistances of deposited Sn onto Pt electrodes amounted to $1\;k{\Omega}$, $5\;k{\Omega}$, $10\;k{\Omega}$ and $50\;k{\Omega}$, respectively. Also The sample with $1,500\;{\AA}$ thickness of Sn was prepared m order to compare sensing properties between conventional type and proposing type. After deposition of metal Sn, $SnO_2$ was formed by thermal oxidation method for 3 hrs. in $O_2$ ambient at $700^{\circ}C$. Surface morphology, crystal structure and surface roughness of oxidized-sensing film were examined by SEM, XRD, and AFM, respectively. From the results of these analyses, the optimal deposition condition of Sn was that the Pt electrode resistance became $10\;k{\Omega}(300\;{\AA})$. Also, the sensing characteristics of fabricated sensing film for various concentrations of butane, propane and carbon monoxide gases were measured at he operating temperatures of $250^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$, respectively. Although catalyst as not added to the sensing film, it has exhibited the high sensitivity to all the test gases.

  • Electron injection from excited rose bengal into the conduction band of a thin film of SnO$2$, semiconductor was investigated in an electrochemical cell, ITO/SnO$2$/rose bengal, NaClO$4$/Pt. It was observed that urea enhanced the supersensitized photocurrent, followed by the reduction in the photocurrent after a shallow maximum. Spectroscopic analyses of the dye solution containing urea revealed that dye aggregation appeared to be involved in the increased photocurrent, although the concentration of the dye was continuously decreased dye to photochemical reactions.

  • This study investigates the use of $TiO_{2},\;Pd,\;Pt$, and In which greatly improves a sensitivity to trimethylamine gas. The metal-$SnO_{2}$ thick films were prepared by screen-printing method onto $Al_{2}O_{3}$ substrates with platinum electrode. The sensing characteristics were investigated by measuring the electrical resistance of each sensor in a test box as a function of detecting gas concentration. This was then used to detect trimethylamine, dimethylamine, and ammonia vapours within the concentration range of 100-1000ppm. The gas sensing properties of metal-$SnO_{2}$ mixed thick films depended on the content and variety of metal. It was found that sensitivity and selectivity of the films dopped with 1 wt% Pd and 10 wt% $TiO_{2}$ for trimethylamin gas showed the best result at $250^{\circ}C$.

  • This study investigated sensitivity of the gas sensor to chemical weapons with the sensor material doped with catalysts. The nano-sized SnO2 powder mixed with metal oxides (TiO2) was doped with transition metals(Pt, Pd and In). Thick film of nano-sized SnO2 powder with TiO2 was prepared by screen-printing method onto Al2O3 substrates with platinum electrode and chemical precipitation method. The physical and chemical properties of sensor material were investigated by SEM/EDS, XRD and BET analyzers. The measured sensitivity to simulant toxic gas is defined as the percentage of resistance of value equation, [(Ra-Rg)/$Ra\;{\times}100$)], that of the resistance(Ra) of SnO2 film in air and the resistance(Rg) of SnO2 film in acetonitrile gas. The best sensitivity and selectivity of these thick film were shown with 1wt.% Pd and 1wt.% TiO2 for acetonitile gas at the operating temperature of $250^{\circ}C$.

  • An all solid-state thin film battery (TFB) was fabricated by growing, undoped and Pt-doped vanadium oxide cathode film ( $V_2$ $O_{5}$ ) on I $n_2$ $O_3$: Sn coated glass, respectively. Room temperature charge-discharge measurements based on Li/Lipon/ $V_2$ $O_{5}$ full-cell structure with a constant current clearly shows that the Pt-doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ cathode film is superior, in terms of cyclibility. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that the Pt doping process induces a more random amorphous structure than an undoped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film. In addition to its modified structure, the Pt-doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film has a smoother surface than the undoped sample. Compared to an undoped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ film, the Pt doped $V_2$ $O_{5}$ cathode film has a higher electron conductivity. We hypothesize that the addition of Pt alters electrochemical performance in a manner of making more random amorphous structure and gives an excess electron by replacing the $V^{+5}$. Possible mechanisms are discussed for the observed Pt doping effect on structural and electrochemical properties of vanadium oxide cathode films, which are grown on I $n_2$ $O_3$: Sn coated glass.

  • SnO2/Pt CO gas sensors operating at relatively low temperature were fabricated, and their performance characteristics were measured. When the mixing weight ratio of SnO2/Pt was 99.5/0.5, a good sensitivity to CO gas was obtained. And the experimental results were in consistent with the gas sensing model. The optimum operating, temperature range of the fabricated devices was 50-80\ulcorner and the response time was 15 sec. at 80\ulcorner in 1000 ppm CO ambient. The humidity dependence of sensitibity to CO gas could be reduced by adding hydrophokbic silica to the mixture of SnO2 and Pt. For the practical application of the fabricated devices, a CO gas alarming system has been developed.
