  • With a small particle size, specific surface area and chemical nature, Pd/Cu-Fe nanocomposites can efficiently remove the organic compounds. In order to understand the applicability for in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater, the degradation of p-nitrophenol by Pd/Cu-Fe nanoparticles was investigated. The degradation results demonstrated that these nanoparticles could effectively degrade p-nitrophenol and near 90% of degradation efficiency was achieved by Pd/Cu-Fe nanocomposites for 120 min treatment. The efficiency of degradation increased significantly when the Pd content increased from 0.05 wt.% and 0.10 wt.% to 0.20 wt.%. Meanwhile, the removal percentage of p-nitrophenol increased from 75.4% and 81.7% to 89.2% within 120 min. Studies on the kinetics of p-nitrophenol that reacts with Pd/Cu-Fe nanocomposites implied that their behaviors followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Furthermore, the batch experiment data suggested that some factors, including Pd/Cu-Fe availability, temperature, pH, different ions (SO42-, PO43-, NO3-) and humic acid content in water, also have significant impacts on p-nitrophenol degradation efficiency. The recyclability of the material was evaluated. The results showed that the Pd/Cu-Fe nanoparticles have good recycle performance, and after three cycles, the removal rate of p-nitrophenol is still more than 83%.

  • We study tidal disruption and subsequent mass fallback process for stars approaching supermassive black holes on bound orbits, by performing three dimensional Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics simulations with a pseudo-Newtonian potential. We find that the mass fallback rate decays with the expected -5/3 power of time for parabolic orbits, albeit with a slight deviation due to the self-gravity of the stellar debris. For eccentric orbits, however, there is a critical value of the orbital eccentricity, significantly below which all of the stellar debris is bound to the supermassive black hole. All the mass therefore falls back to the supermassive black hole in a much shorter time than in the standard, parabolic case. The resultant mass fallback rate considerably exceeds the Eddington accretion rate and substantially differs from the -5/3 power of time. We also show that general relativistic precession is crucial for accretion disk formation via circularization of stellar debris from stars on moderately eccentric orbits.

  • A 40 Gb/s clock and data recovery (CDR) module for a fiber-optic receiver with improved phase-locked loop (PLL) circuits has been successfully implemented. The PLL of the CDR module employs an improved D-type flip-flop frequency acquisition circuit, which helps to stabilize the CDR performance, to obtain faster frequency acquisition, and to reduce the time of recovering the lock state in the event of losing the lock state. The measured RMS jitter of the clock signal recovered from 40 Gb/s pseudo-random binary sequence ($2^{31}-1$) data by the improved PLL clock recovery module is 210 fs. The CDR module also integrates a 40 Gb/s D-FF decision circuit, demonstrating that it can produce clean retimed data using the recovered clock.

  • The MST (Minimum Spanning Tree) matching algorithm had been used for searching the part accord points extracted from the gray level fingerprint image. The method, however, had some limitations. To obtain the relationship between enrolled and inputted fingerprint, the MST was used to generate the tree graph that represent the unique graph for given fingerprint data. From the graph, the accord points are estimated. However, the shape of the graph highly depends on the positions of the minutiae. If there are some pseudo minutiae caused by noise, the shape of the graph will be different In this paper, to overcome the limitations of the MST, we proposed CRM (Center of Rotation Method) algorithm that found the true part accord points. The proposed method is based on the assumption ...

  • Nano-sized Sn particles were coated with Ni-P layer using an electroless deposition method and their anodic performance was tested for lithium secondary batteries. Uniform coating layers were obtained, of which the thickness was controlled by varying the $Ni^{2+}$ concentration in the plating bath. It was found that the Ni-P layer plays two important roles in improving the anodic performance of Sn powder electrode. First, it prevents the inter-particle aggregation between Sn particles during the charge/discharge process. Second, it provides an electrical conduction pathway to the Sn particles, which allows an electrode fabrication without an addition of conductive carbon. A pseudo-optimized sample showed a good cyclability and high capacity ($>400mAh\;g^{-1}$) even without conductive carbon loading.

  • The seismic safety analysis were performed for the center-core rockfill dam(CCRD) The static and pseudo-static FEM analysis using seismic coefficient Method, and dynamic FEM analysis using Hachinohe earthquake wave(0.12g) were used for the seismic safety of CCRD. The results of seismic analysis were that the factor of safety of down slope was 1.5, horizontal displacement is about 14.3cm, and vertical displacement is 3.3cm at dam creast. The model dam did not show any seismic stability problems for 0.12g. And much more research is still necessary in seismic safety of CCRD.

  • The effect of sodium taurodihydrofusidate (STDHF) on drug permeation across nasal mucosa was studied in vitro using Ussing type diffusion chamber. Disodium cromoglicate (DSCG, M.W.5123) and fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran (FD) of different molecular wieghts (M.W. 4400-71200) were used as model drugs. Pemeation profiles of DSCG and FDs showed a typical pseudo steady-state curve with short lag time. The pemeability coefficient of FD (M.W. 9400) sigmodially increased with increasing STDHF concentration. It also enhanced the DSCG pemeation. Interestingly the enhancement efficacy was independent of molecular weight of penetrants.

  • The adsorption of uranium (VI) by calcium alginate beads was examined by batch experiments. The effects of environmental conditions on U (VI) adsorption were studied, including contact time, pH, initial concentration of U (VI), and temperature. The alginate beads were characterized by using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that hydroxyl and alkoxy groups are present at the surface of the beads. The experimental results showed that the adsorption of U (VI) by alginate beads was strongly dependent on pH, the adsorption increased at pH 3~7, then decreased at pH 7~9. The adsorption reached equilibrium within 2 minutes. The adsorption kinetics of U (VI) onto alginate beads can be described by a pseudo first-order kinetic model. The adsorption isotherm can be described by the Redlich-Peterson model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 237.15 mg/g. The sorption process is spontaneous and has an exothermic reaction.

  • Ultrasonic motors have many excellent performances. A variety of ultrasonic motors has been developed and used as an actuator in motion control systems. However, this motor has nonlinear characteristics. Therefore, it is difficult to achieve the precise position control system incorporating with the ultrasonic motor. This paper describes a position control scheme for traveling-wave type ultrasonic motor using a pseudo-derivative control with feedforward gains (PDFF) controller designed by the coefficient diagram method (CDM). The PDFF control system satisfies both the tracking and regulation performances, which are the most important for the precise position control system. The CDM is shown to be an efficient and simple method to design the parameters of PDFF controller. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is demonstrated by experiments.

  • Amentoflavone is a plant biflavonoid that was isolated from an ethyl acetate extract of the whole plant of Selaginella tamariscina (Beauv.) spring. 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy including DEPT, HMQC, and HMBC were used to determine its structure. Amentoflavone exhibited potent antifungal activity against several pathogenic fungal strains but had a very low hemolytic effect on human erythrocytes. In particular, amentoflavone induced the accumulation of intracellular trehalose on C. albicans as a stress response to the drug, and disrupted the dimorphic transition that forms pseudo-hyphae during pathogenesis. In conclusion, amentoflavone has great potential to be a lead compound for the development of antifungal agents.
