  • Characterization, dismantling and pre-disposal management of irradiated graphite (i-graphite) have an important role in safe decommissioning of several nuclear facilities which used this material as moderator and reflector. In addition to common radiation protection issues, easily volatizing long-lived radionuclides and stored Wigner energy could be released during imprudent retrieval and processing of i-graphite. With this regard, among all cutting technologies, abrasive waterjet (AWJ) can successfully achieve all of the thermo-mechanical and radiation protection objectives. In this work, factorial experiments were designed and systematically conducted to characterize the AWJ processing parameters and the machining capability. Moreover, the limitation of dust production and secondary waste generation has been addressed since they are important aspects for radiation protection and radioactive waste management. The promising results obtained on non-irradiated nuclear graphite blocks demonstrate the applicability of AWJ as a valid technology for optimizing the retrieval, storage, and disposal of such radioactive waste. These activities would benefit from the points of view of safety, management, and costs.

  • An empirical formula fur the neutron dose equivalent at the maze entrance of medical accelerator treatment rooms was derived on the basis of a Monte Carlo simulation. The simulated neutron dose equivalents around the Varian medical accelerator by the MCNPX code were employed. Two cases of target rotational planes were considered: parallel and perpendicular to maze walls. Most of the maximum neutron dose equivalents at the doorway were found when the target rotational planes were parallel to maze walls and the beams were directed to the inner maze entrances. The neutron dose equivalents at the outer maze entrances were calculated for about 698 medical accelerator facilities which were generated from the geometry configurations of running treatment rooms, based on such gantry rotation that produces the maximum neutron dose at the doorway. The results calculated with the empirical formula in this study were compared with those calculated by the Kersey method for 7 operating facilities. It was found that the maximum disagreement between the calculation of this study and that of the Kersey method was a factor of 8.54 with the value calculated by the Kersey method exceeding that of this study. It was concluded that the kersey method estimated the neutron dose equivalent at the doorway computed by MCNPX more conservatively than this study technique.

  • Continuous increasing of impervious area due to urbanization and rainfall quantity due to environmental changes aggravate flooding risk in low land area. Therefore. Seoul municipal authorities go on securing an ample budget for reinforcement and establishment of inner water and inland drainage pumping facilities. But. there is no investment for developing optimal operation rules for appropriate application of existing facilities. In this study. fuzzy control techniques are developed. and applied to 57 stations of inner water and inland drainage pump for model assessment. In these results. fuzzy models have more efficiency in the inland flooding protection than the existing pump operation rule by water level in the same conditions.

  • A lot of parts in FGD (Flue Gas Desulphurization) systems of fossil-fuel power plants show the environments in which are highly changeable and extremely acidic corrosive medium according to time and locations, e.g. in duct works, coolers and re-heaters etc.. These conditions are formed when system materials are immersed in fluid that flows on them or when exhausted gas is condensed into thin layered medium to contact materials of the system walls and roofs. The environments make troublesome corrosion and air pollution problems that are occurred from the leakage of the condensed solution. The frequent shut-down and repairing works of FGD systems also demand costs and low efficiencies of those facilities. In general, high corrosion resistant materials have been used to solve this problem. However, even the super alloys and Teflon linings sometimes have not been good enough to preventing corrosion. Further more, they are expensive and not easily repairable in short periods of operation stops. In this work, new technology that is effective, economical and easily repairable has proposed to solve the corrosion problems in FGD facilities. This technology contains cathodic protection, coatings and remote monitoring-controlling systems.

  • The objective of this paper is to construct a model to be used in deciding whether to repair or rebuild school buildings is depending on their ages and other factors. The theme of this paper is the age is the main variable but other factors such as floor, innerwall, ceiling, door, inner window of the class room, outer window of the class room, inner window of the corridor, outer window of the corridor, middle window between the classroom and the corridor, light, heater, speaker, fire protection sensor, TV monitor, and telephone status would influence the final decisions. This paper employs an experimental case study method. Using the stepwise, statistical, classification method commonly used in discriminant analysis, it evaluates 12,766 rooms of 87 different high schools in Seoul. The result of this study indicates that some critical variables influencing the final decisions are the status of TV monitor, middle window between the classroom and the corridor, light, inner window of the corridor, fire protection sensor, innerwall, speaker utensil, outer window of the class room, and door of the class room. This paper also suggests a linear discriminant function will be used for this kind of studies. Finally the paper recommends policies with respect to the variables and discriminant functions evaluated.

  • In generally, the estimation work regarding building mechanical service system in comparison with other architectural estimations is time-consuming, and the process is continuously getting more difficult because of the increased usage of the attached piping materials such as fittings and supports in addition to their complicated construction processes. In order to improve this problem, the Korean authority provides a simple method to estimate the attached material rate regarding the main piping material, which is the most time-consuming work in the architectural mechanical estimation. However, to be an applicable method on construction site, a proper conversion rate of the attached piping material is still required for the proposed method regarding building usage and working types. Therefore, the purpose of this research is the suggestion of the material and labor cost rate of the attached piping materials such as the fittings and supports by work types and fitting methods of indoor fire, sprinkler, and extinguishing gas piping work of mechanical fire protection facilities in office buildings that have been designed after 2010.

  • Social welfare facilities are used by a wide range of local residents, including vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and people with disabilities. During emergencies like fires, confusion can arise as these individuals try to evacuate. Evacuation simulation results have shown that utilizing evacuation systems based on specific evacuation scenarios can significantly decrease the time required for evacuation compared to general evacuation procedures. By anticipating potential fires based on changes in social and facility environments, appropriate evacuation scenarios can be developed and applied to evacuation systems, thus contributing to the safety and security of individuals during emergencies. In conclusion, for social welfare facilities that serve a large number of people, it is necessary to expand the focus on performance-based design depending on the size of the facility, and to continuously develop and train for appropriate evacuation scenarios that align with changing facility environments.

  • Human and material damage can be reduced if the risk is evaluated by engineering analysis of fire combustion products, smoke concentration, and smoke movement speed in the event of a fire in apartment houses and officetels. In this study, a lot of research on related safety evaluation in the basement needs to be studied and reflected in design, so experimental research was conducted to analyze the flow of smoke through computer simulation and provide analysis data through evacuation safety evaluation. First of all, the five-story underground parking lot subject to simulation has a large floor area, which is advantageous for improving evacuation safety performance, but it uses temperature detectors to increase detection time and fire spread speed. Second, it was analyzed that the evacuation time at all evacuation ports did not exceed the evacuation time, and as the time from the start of evacuation to the evacuation time was 216.9% compared to the travel time, it was evaluated that the safety performance of the evacuation was secured. Third, the above simulation results are a comprehensive safety evaluation based on the non-operation of fire extinguishing facilities in the fire room to increase safety, which means that smoother evacuation safety performance can be secured by linking fire extinguishing facilities.
