  • Traditional analyses of patent system have considered innovations in isolation and precluded the technological interrelationships between innovations. Common feature of cumulativeness during the process of technological change, however, brings the scope of patent protection into the major policy concern and currently occupies the central position in recent patent reform controversy. This study surveys the recent developments in the economic analysis of patent scope with corresponding introduction to the legal perspectives regarding patent scope. Although the issue of patent scope is complex in nature and depends crucially upon technological environment and the nature of innovations, this study can enlarge the understanding of the pros and cons of patent scope policy, which will become increasingly disputable in the forth-coming era of specialized patent court in Korea.

  • The Outsourcing Industry has grown swift pace and evolved over time, and the Global IT Outsourcing market has shown signs of a steady growth. In the Korean company, however, IT Outsourcing is not active as that of the advanced countries and there is lack of literature to understand the characteristics of IT Outsourcing in the Korean company. This paper, therefore, analyze the outcomes surveying 65 companies in Korea to investigate how IT Outsourcing risk factors affects IT Outsourcing intention. Based on our literature reviews based on number of key articles, journals, and the focus group interviews, IT Outsourcing risk factors are proposed into four different domains: Transaction, Client, Vendor, Environment perspectives. It found that one factor(Vendor perspectives) is closely related to the IT Outsourcing intention of the Korean company. Finally, this paper analyzed the pros and cons of IT Outrcing offers a guide to the risk factors.

  • The basic principle and concept for hydrogen production via water-splitting process are introduced. In particular, recent research activities and their progress in the photoelectrochemical water-splitting process are investigated. The material perspectives of semiconducting photocatalysts are considered from metal oxides, including titanium oxides, to carbon compounds and perovskites. Various structural configurations, from conventional photoanodes with metal cathodes to tandem and nanostructures, are also studied. The pros and cons of each are described in terms of light absorption, charge separation/photoexcited electron-hole pair recombinations and further solar-to-hydrogen efficiency. In this research, we attempt to provide a broad view of up-to-date research and development as well as, possibly, future directions in the photoelectrochemical water-splitting field.

  • A FFT/IFFT processor is the key component for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems based IEEE 802.11n wireless local area network (WLAN). There exists many radix algorithms according to the structure of butterfly as FFT sub-module, each has the pros and cons on hardware complexity. Here, mixed radix algorithms for 64 and 128 FFT/IFFT processors are proposed, which reduce hardware complexity by using mixture of radix-23 and radix-4 algorithms. The proposed algorithm finish calculation within 3.2${\mu}s$ in order to meet IEEE 802.11n standard requirements and it has less hardware complexity compared with conventional algorithms.

  • This study focused on the increase in refugee-related discourse in Korean society with the recent inflow of asylum seekers to Jeju Island. The purpose of our study was to understand the trends in public opinion concerning the acceptance of refugees by analyzing the content of refugee-related video commentary on YouTube. Topic modeling was conducted to analyze the main points, context, and ideas in the comments. The results indicated that the media mainly focus on the pros and cons of refugees, restricting the refugee issue to the problem of acceptance with a narrow focus on the case of Jeju Island. Refugee acceptance was treated as overwhelmingly unacceptable in the comments. We found that commenters often used negative discourse in the comments as a device for reproducing and amplifying hate speech.

  • Panel data sets have recently been developed in various areas, and many recent studies have analyzed panel, or longitudinal data sets. Often a dichotomous dependent variable occur in survival analysis, biomedical and epidemiological studies that is analyzed by a generalized linear mixed effects model (GLMM). The most common estimation method for the binary panel data may be the maximum likelihood (ML). Many statistical packages provide ML estimates; however, the estimates are computed from numerically approximated likelihood function. For instance, R packages, pglm (Croissant, 2017) approximate the likelihood function by the Gauss-Hermite quadratures, while Rchoice (Sarrias, Journal of Statistical Software, 74, 1-31, 2016) use a Monte Carlo integration method for the approximation. As a result, it can be observed that different packages give different results because of different numerical computation methods. In this note, we discuss the pros and cons of numerical methods compared with the exact computation method.

  • Petroleum industry produces one of the popular hazardous waste known as Petroleum Sludge. The treatment and disposal of petroleum sludge has created a major challenge in recent years. This review provides insights into various approaches involved in the treatment, and disposal of petroleum sludge. Various methods used in the treatment and disposal of petroleum sludge such as incineration, stabilization/solidification, oxidation, and bio-degradation are explained fully and other techniques utilized in oil recovery from petroleum sludge such as solvent extraction, centrifugation, surfactant EOR, freeze/thaw, pyrolysis, microwave irradiation, electro-kinetic method, ultrasonic irradiation and froth flotation were discussed. The pros and cons of these methods were critically considered and a recommendation for economically useful alternatives to disposal of this unfriendly material was presented.

  • This study reviews application of data-driven anomaly detection techniques to the aviation domain. Recent advances in deep learning have inspired significant anomaly detection research, and numerous methods have been proposed. However, some of these advances have not yet been explored in aviation systems. After briefly introducing aviation safety issues, data-driven anomaly detection models are introduced. Along with traditional statistical and well-established machine learning models, the state-of-the-art deep learning models for anomaly detection are reviewed. In particular, the pros and cons of hybrid techniques that incorporate an existing model and a deep model are reviewed. The characteristics and applications of deep learning models are described, and the possibility of applying deep learning methods in the aviation field is discussed.
