HEP(Head Electric Power) system, supplying 3-phase service power to the coach vehicles, is a kind of special auxiliary power equipment which is boarded on 8200 series electric locomotives in KORAIL. This equipment shares high voltage DC link with a main propulsion converter/inverter systems. It was difficult to use high frequency PWM technique so that GTO has been used as a power device same like the main power system. Due to low PWM frequency(300Hz) of HEP inverter, the output voltage has less power quality comparing to normal SIV(Static Inverter) system. In this paper, an optimal PWM strategy is presented for new IGBT type HEP inverter system. Several PWM techniques were investigated to improve output voltage quality under fixed lower filter inductance and not high PWM frequency. Finally PC simulations have been done to clarify its availability.

Micro nozzle is employed as a dynamic passive valve in micro fluidic devices. Micro nozzle array is used in micro droplet generation in bio-medical applications and propulsion device for actuating satellite and aerospace ship in vacuum environments. Aperture angle and the channel length of the micro nozzle affect its retification efficiency, and thus it is needed to produce micro nozzle precisely. MEMS process has a limit on making a micro nozzle with high-aspect ratio. Reactive ion etching process can make high-aspect ratio structure, but it is difficult to make the complex shape. Focused ion beam deposition has advantage in machining of three-dimensional complex structures of sub-micron size. Moreover, it is possible to monitor machining process and to correct defected part at simultaneously. In this study, focused ion beam deposition was applied to micro nozzle production.

When an automatic course-keeping is concerned as is quite popular in modern navigation the closed-loop steering system consists of autopilot device power unit (or telemotor unit) steering gear magnetic or gyro compass and ship dynamics. The consideration of irregular disturbances to ship dyanmics and a few non-linear mechanisms involved in the system inevitably or artificially are known to be very important in properly evaluating or analyzing the automatic steering system. In the present study the mathematical model of each element of an automatic steering system is derived which takes account of a fex non-linear mechanisms. PD(Proportional-Derivative) controller and low-pass filter with a weather adjustment are adopted to modelling the characteristics of an autopilot. The calculation method of imposing irregular disturbances to ship dynamics is proposed where irregular disturbances implying irregular wave and the fluctuating component of wind. For he evaluation of automatic steering system of ships in the open seas an important term "performance index" is introduced from the viewpoint of energy saving which derived from the concept of energy loss on ship propulsion. Finally the present methods are applied to two typical types of ship ; an ore carrier and a fishing boat. The various effects of linear and/or non-linear control constants of autopilot on propulsive energy loss are investigated to validate and clarify the present smulation technique.

The determination of thrust is essential in design and evaluation of a hypersonic airbreathing propulsion device. Conventional methods to determine the thrust is using thrust stand or force measurement system. However, these conventional methos are not applicable to the case where thrusts stands are impractical, such as free jet testing of engines, and model combustor. For this reason, the thrust determination method from measured pitot pressure is considered and validated. Validation of thrust determination from pitot pressures can be achieved by comparing the actual thrust from thrust stand. For validation purpose, a small-scale supersonic wind tunnel is installed on the thrust stand. Thrusts are measured while pressures are measured simulaneously. Then, the thrust from pitot pressure measurements are compared with the measured thrust and theoretical thrusts.
Micro catalytic reactors are alternative propulsion device that can be used on a nano satellite. When used with a monopropellant, $H_2O_2$, a micro catalytic reactor needs only one supply system as the monopropellant reacts spontaneously on contact with catalyst and releases heat without external ignition, while separate supply lines for fuel and oxidizer are needed for a bipropellant rocket engine. Additionally, $H_2O_2$ is in liquid phase at room temperature, eliminating the burden of storage for gaseous fuel and carburetion of liquid fuel. In order to design a micro catalytic reactor, an appropriate catalyst material must be selected. Considering the safety concern in handling the monopropellants and reaction performance of catalyst, we selected hydrogen peroxide at volume concentration of 70% and perovskite redox catalyst of lantanium cobaltate doped with strondium. Perovskite catalysts are known to have superior reactivity in reduction-oxidation chemical processes. In particular, lantanium cobaltate has better performance in chemical reactions involving oxygen atom exchange than other perovskite materials. In the present study, a process to prepare perovskite type catalyst, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$, and measurement of its propellant decomposition performance in a test reactor are described.

The aim of this study is to develop a technique for the accelerated life test of the capacitor in a propulsion control device of a traction inverter used for a high-speed train. Using this technique, the accelerated life test can possibly estimate the life cycle of a capacitor under various temperature conditions and irregularly applied voltage. The accelerated life test is conducted for the capacitor of the traction inverter. The common proceedings of this test are selection of failure mechanism, determination of accelerated stress, range determination of the accelerated stress, determination of the test condition, and distribution and determination of the sample. From this result, the continuous applied voltage was not considered for the acceleration factors anymore. Therefore, the final result having an acceleration factor of 9.4 (= 13,626/1,445) was observed. Furthermore, the life-shortening acceleration effect for the irregular applied voltage condition can be applied to various situations.

Railway vehicles driven by wheels obtain force required for propulsion and braking by adhesive force between wheels and rails, this adhesive force is determined by multiplying adhesion coefficient of the friction surface by the applied axle load. Because the adhesion coefficient has a peak at certain slip velocity, it is important to determine the maximum values of the friction coefficient on the contact area. But this adhesive phenomenon is not clearly examined or analyzed. Thus we have developed new test procedure using the scaled adhesion test-bench for analyzing of the adhesion coefficient between wheel and rail. This adhesion test equipment is an experimental device that contacts mutually with twin disc which are equivalent to wheels and rails of railway vehicles.

This paper presents a numerical optimization technique and switching phase control technique aiming at improvement of efficiency of the low voltage BLDC motor. The optimization technique is performed using the generalized sensitivity technique, response surface method(RSM) and sampling minimization technique. In order to minimize current consumption of the BLDC motor, the switching method of the driving device is optimized using RSM with finite element analysis. The ratings of BLDC motor are 50 W, 24 V, 1200 rpm. As optimizing results, the input current is reduced from 2.78 to 2.51 [A] when the switching phase is shifted by -2.65 [DEG_ELC] at the rated driving speed of 1200 [rpm]. It is confirmed that the proposed method reduces the consuming current of the low voltage BLDC motor through switching phase control method using the numerical optimization method.

This paper studies battery charging methods using existing motor inductance and 3-phase inverters without an additional charger to charge the battery of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). As inverter switch control and motor coil used as the energy storage device for boosting make the system the boost converter, the additional charger is eliminated and volume, weight, and cost for the charger are reduced. Various charging methods according to topologies of the system and configurations of the controller are analyzed and verified by PSIM simulation.
