  • Lifted flame stabilization mechanism can be explained with constant Schmidt number from the equation of $H^{\ast}_L/d^2_o=const{\times}v_e^{(2Sc-1)/(Sc-1)}$. In this research, a method of local Schmidt number was applied in order to measure edge flame propagation velocities, and edge flame propagation velocity was calculated from the trend between lift-off height and nozzle flow rate.

  • In general, two dimensionless numbers are used in predicting the front propagation rate of density currents: the densimetric Froude number and the dimensionless front velocity. The former expresses the front speed in terms of the characteristic length and reduced gravitational acceleration. Previous papers report that the range of this dimensionless number is wide. The other is the dimensionless front velocity, which is a function of the buoyancy flux per unit width. This paper presents the state of the art review of the dimensionless numbers for the front propagation rate of density currents. Values of the densimetric Froude number are found to be consistent when the proper characteristic length is used for normalization. Then, the densimetric Froude number and the dimensionless front velocity are compared by using the experimental data of density currents over a horizontal surface.

  • This paper examines the dispersion relation governing the wave propagation on cylindrical shells. The assumption of thin shells allows the dispersion relation to be separated into three relations related to the propagation of flexural waves and two types of membrane waves. Those relations are used to identify the characteristics of the wave number curves. The dispersion relation provides two and three closed wave number curves below and above the ring frequency. Above the ring frequency three wave number curves are clearly identified to be those of flexural, shear and longitudinal waves, respectively. Below the ring frequency, the characteristics of two wave number curves are identified with dependence of the direction of wave propagation.

  • In this paper, fatigue crack propagation behaviors were investigated experimentally for the materials, carbon steel forgings (SF45A, SF50A, SF60A) which are used in the marine propeller shaft. The results obtained are as follows: The number of cycles required to grow crack length 1.30mm from microcrack initiation was about 60% of the total fatigue life. Fatigue crack propagation rate was expressed by the equation d(2a)/dN_B 2a/$N_f$ and the result was agreed well with the experimented data. And the equation d(2a)/dN=$C{\sigma}_a^m(2a)^n$ was evaluated also. Obtained material property m and n are 3~5 and 1-1.5 respectably, and the result was reasonably agreed to the data obtained from experiments.

  • In this study, in order to observe treeing of prebreakdown phenomena, time variation of acoustic emission properties due to initiation and propagation of tree in LDPE was investigated under AC voltage. The experimental results were as following, pulse number and average amplitude of AE were increased along with near breakdown rather than tree initiation, also, according to increasing of applied voltage, tree propagation was blunted, while pulse number and average amplitude of AE was promoted. In each applied voltage, ${\phi}-a$ distributions during propagation of tree were changed to special patterns, skewness S and kurtosis K reflected well time variation of ${\phi}-a$ distribution patterns. It is thought that initiation and propagation state of tree can be easily monitored, so long as time variation of pulse number and average amplitude of AE, skewness Sand kurtosis K of ${\phi}-a$ distribution are always monitored.

  • This paper describes an analysis of various factors affecting traffic noise propagation, including the distance from the road, existence of a direct path of noise propagation, density and height of buildings, and procedure for predicting the attenuation of noise levels from roads. The analysis is based on a multiple number of regression models, utilizing the quantification theory of the first kind. This study incorporates a large amount of survey data concerning traffic noise propagation. The survey of the traffic noise propagation around main roads was carried out in several residential areas, mainly in Kwangju. The attenuation of noise levels measured provided 691 usable data samples. A multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the distance from the road makes the most significant contribution to the attenuation of the noise level. The second contributor was found to be the existence of a direct path of noise propagation. The building density and average height of the buildings also affected the attenuation of the noise level considerably. Other factors, such as the height of the building behind the receiver microphone and the number of traffic lanes on the noise-source roads, did not contribute as much to the attenuation of the noise level as the factors mentioned avove.

  • Investigation on ignition and flame propagation of pyrolyzing fuel in a cylindrical enclosure is accomplished. The pyrolyzing fuel of cylindrical shape is located in an outer cylinder sustained at high-temperature. Due to gravity, the buoyancy motion is inevitably incurred in the enclosure and this affects the flame initiation and propagation behavior. The radiative heat transfer plays an important role since a high temperature difference is involved in the problem. Therefore in all cases presented here, the intrinsic radiation effects are considered. Numerical studies have been performed over various governing parameters, such as Grashof number, overheat ratio, and vertical fuel eccentricity. Depending on the Grashof number, the flame behavior is found to be totally different: a separated visible flame appears as the Grashof number reaches 10(sup)7. The location of flame onset is also affected by the vertical eccentricity of inner pyrolyzing fuel as well as thermal conditions applied.

  • Plants regenerated from in vitro cultures are associated with chromosomal variations, which have been generally found in long-term culture. Reducing plant culture age is one of the ways to reduce genetic and epigenetic changes. The present study focused on the efficient in vitro propagation of lily cultivars and has intensified to speed up bulb propagation for cryopreservation. The multiplication process applied in this experiment uses starting material, which the newly small bulb formed from bulb-scales in two lily cultivars. The adventitious bulb from bulb-scale tissue cultured on three different media following Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 1 g/L Charcoal, MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone with or without Charcoal, respectively. After about seven weeks, there is little change in the number of newly propagated bulbs in small bulbs of the two media. Compared to the both mediums, the number of the propagated bulbs is increased 5 times in MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone without Charcoal. After about seven weeks, the results of the propagation showed that the number of the propagated bulbs is increased 5 times in MS medium containing 0.3 mg/L IAA and 0.4 mg/L BA hormone without Charcoal compared to the both mediums. The number of propagated bulbs ranged from 5 to 6 and 4 to 6 with an average of 5 in Tropicalpink and Greenstar cultivars, respectively. There is little change in the number of newly propagated bulbs in small bulbs of other media. The multiplication process applied in this study may save in vitro culture period and effort.

  • In this paper new back propagation algorithm which adds neurons to hidden layer is proposed. this proposed algorithm is applied to the pattern recognition of written number coupled with back propagation algorithm through omitting redundant learning. Learning rate and recognition rate of the proposed algorithm are compared with those of the conventional back propagation algorithm and the back propagation through omitting redundant learning. The learning rate of proposed algorithm is 4 times as fast as the conventional back propagation algorithm and 2 times as fast as the back propagation through omitting redundant learning. The recognition rate is 96.2% in case of the conventional back propagation algorithm, 96.5% in case of the back propagation through omitting redundant learning and 97.4% in the proposed algorithm.

  • The aim of this work is to analyze and predict the wave propagation behavior of the carbon nanotube reinforced composites (CNTRC) beams within the framework of various higher order shear deformation beam theory. Using the Euler-Lagrange principle, the wave equations for CNTRC beams are derived, where the determining factor is to make the determinant equal to zero. Based on the eigenvalue method, the relationship between wave number and circular frequency is obtained. Furthermore, the phase and group velocities during wave propagation are obtained as a function of wave number, and the material properties of CNTRC beams are estimated by the mixture rule. In this paper, various higher order shear beam theory including Euler beam theory, Timoshenko beam theory and other beam theories are mainly adopted to analyze the wave propagation problem of the CNTRC beams, and by this way, we conduct a comparative analysis to verify the correctness of this paper. The mathematical model provided in this paper is verified numerically by comparing it with some existing results. We further investigate the effects of different enhancement modes of CNTs, volume fraction of CNTs, spring factor and other aspects on the wave propagation behaviors of the CNTRC beams.
