The Changes of Self-efficacy Beliefs of Pre-service Teachers for Technology Integration through Programming-based TPACK Educational Program

  • In this paper, we propose the effects of programming-based TPACK educational program on the pre-service teacher's self-efficacy beliefs for technology integration. For this study, pre-service teachers who received programming education and TPACK education based on ICT were set as control group and pre-service teachers who received programming-based TPACK education as experimental group. In order to observe the change, the pre-service teachers conducted the test tool to measure the self-efficacy beliefs for technology integration before and after applying the educational program. As a result of the study, only the pre-service teachers who received the programming-based TPACK education showed significant improvement in the self-efficacy beliefs for technology integration. Furthermore, in the post-test, the experimental group showed a significantly higher difference than the control group. Through this study, it was concluded that programming-based TPACK educational program is effective in enhancing pre-service teacher's self-efficacy beliefs for technology integration.

The Effects of Scratch Programming on Preservice Teachers: Assessment Utilizing Computational Thinking and Bloom's Taxonomy (스크래치 프로그래밍이 예비교사에게 미치는 영향 : 컴퓨팅 사고 및 블룸의 텍사노미 활용 평가)

  • The goal of this study is to assess the effects of Scratch programming classes on preservice teachers by using computational thinking and cognitive evaluations based on Bloom's taxonomy. To pursue this research goal we measured preservice teachers' programming skills using cognitive evaluation items based on Bloom's taxonomy after preservice teachers took one-semester Scratch programming course. In addition, a survey focused on computational thinking (CT) concepts, CT practices, and CT perspectives was conducted. We also conducted artifact-based interviews to unpack preservice teachers' experiences of working on team projects and analyzed their experiences qualitatively. The results of this study are meaningful because we assessed preservice teachers' experiences comprehensively with both quantitative and qualitative methods. In addition, this study provides us with implications for evaluation perspectives in designing programming courses for preservice teachers by adopting Bloom's taxonomy scheme.

Study on Recognition Changes Regarding Programming Education and Necessity (프로그래밍 교육과 필요성의 인식변화에 관한 연구)

  • In spite of the revisions of guideline for ICT curriculum and Informatics curriculum a lot of people have yet a negative sight and indifferent attitude about their changes. In this research, we used programming course to correct their wrong recognition on Informatics Education. Our experiment study is based on the hypothesis that pre-teachers recognize spontaneously an effect of programming. There are 3 steps that a preliminary questionnaire, a programming course, a post-questionnaire are conducted to 130 pre-teachers to see how recognition changes. There were several findings made in this study. It revealed that pre-teachers's understanding of programming and the need of programming education was extremely poor. However, after programming course, it was found that recognition of pre-teachers change statistically regarding concept of programming and a need of programming education.

Development of Game Programming Education Model 4E for Pre-Service Teachers (예비교사를 위한 게임 프로그래밍 교육모델 4E 개발)

  • Programming education generally includes problem analysis process, automation through algorithms and programming, and generalization process. It is a good software education method for students in improving computing thinking. However, it was found that beginners had difficulties in understanding instruction usage, writing algorithms, and implementing programming. In this study, we developed a game programming education model and curriculum for programming education of pre-service teachers. The 4E model consisted of empathy, exploration, engagement and evaluation. In addition, it is configured to learn game core elements and core command blocks by each stage. To help the pre-service teachers understand the use of various programming blocks, a three-step teaching and learning method was presented, consisting of example learning, self-game creation, and team-based projects. As a result of applying and verifying the curriculum for 15 weeks, it showed significant results in the 4E model and pre-service teachers' perception of block programming competence and the level of computational thinking on the submitted game project results was also high.

Effects of Programming-Based TPACK Education Program on TPACK of Pre-service Teachers (프로그래밍 기반 TPACK 교육 프로그램이 예비 교사의 TPACK에 미치는 효과)

  • This study aims to verify the effectiveness of the programming-based TPACK educational program developed by Kim and Lee (2019) in improving the TPACK of pre-service teachers. The treatment used ICT-based (control) and programming-based TPACK educational programs (first, second, third, and final cycle) developed through design-based research. TPACK test tools were implemented pre and post treatment, and the test results were analyzed using ANCOVA. Therefore, the TPACK of pre-service teachers who implemented the programming-based TPACK educational program was significantly higher compared to the ICT-based TPACK educational program. Furthermore, through this design-based research, the effect of the developed final educational program on the TPACK of pre-service teachers was particularly the most outstanding. Therefore, it can be concluded that the programming-based TPACK education program developed through design-based research is effective in improving the TPACK of pre-service teachers.

  • The purpose of this study is to derive implications by grasping how the occupational identity of vocational training teachers who teach programming in vocational training field was formed. Teacher A, who has been engaged in programming education and training for over 20 years, was interviewed in a narrative research. For the research question 'what is the occupational identity formation process of programming vocational training teachers?' It was found that educational experience had an effect on the formation of occupational identity. This study is meaningful in that it attempted to investigate the process of forming occupational identity of programming vocational training teachers and to examine its meaning. Proposals for future research are as follows. First, in the follow-up study, it is necessary to study a wide range of experiences targeting various programming vocational training teachers according to age, working period, and affiliated institutions. Second, it is necessary to study policies and issues experienced in the field.

Elementary and Secondary Programming Education Plan Using App Inventor (앱 인벤터를 활용한 초·중등 프로그래밍 교육 방안)

  • Authentic programming environment makes App Inventor interesting educational programming language. However, there are not sufficient studies for usefulness of App Inventor as educational programming language, so proper design of App Inventor education is not available. This article aims to design proper programming education plan using App Inventor. A survey was conducted to ask for appropriation of App Inventor education to teachers and students. As a result, teachers and students were satisfied with App Inventor for programming language in elementary and secondary schools, due to easy-to-use programming environment and real product run in their devices. But learners need to have prior knowledge to use App Inventor and teachers have to manage learners' devices properly. Finally, revised elementary and secondary programming education plan using App Inventor was presented.

The Effect of Programming Education Using Hands-on Robot on Learning Motivation and Academic Achievement of Prospective Elementary Teachers (교구로봇을 활용한 프로그래밍 교육이 예비 초등교사의 학습동기 및 학업성취도에 미치는 영향)

  • Lately, as the importance of software and the software education has been emphasized, the studies on ways of teaching programming to elementary students have been actively progressed. However, most of undergraduates as prospective elementary teachers who will be in charge of teaching programming at the elementary schools have a lack of interest in programming education as well as of the understanding of basic programming principles. Therefore, this study investigated how programming education using hands-on robot and scratch affected learning motivation and academic achievement of preliminary teachers. The comparison of results of two programming educations shows that the programming education using hands-on robot revealed statistically significant difference in learning motivation and academic achievement.

  • Artificial intelligence is expanding its reach throughout our society, and education is no exception to its scope of application. In line with this trend, we conducted a computer programming class for teachers in graduate school. The final purpose of this class is to develop the programming skills of teachers who teach students to code artificial intelligence programs. This paper studies how the logical thinking and mental consistency of teachers, who are learners, are related to programming aptitude and describes education environmental factors of the class. It was confirmed that logical thinking and mental consistency were proportional to the programming score. This proportional relationship is expected to apply to students learning programming languages. When team formation is required in programming classes, it is expected that better learning effects will be achieved if students with excellent logical thinking and mental consistency are included in each team.

Analysis of Elementary Pre-service Teachers' Experiences and Understanding of Software Education (초등 예비교사의 소프트웨어 교육 관련 경험과 이해도 분석)

  • Because the success of SW education depends on teachers' competences and understanding, many universities of education are carrying out SW education for pre-service teachers. The purpose of this research is to analyze the current status of pre-service teachers' programming learning experiences and understanding of curriculum and educational effects related to SW education. The participants were 294 junior and senior students enrolled in a university of education. In relation to 'programming learning experiences', many responded positively in terms of interest, usefulness and willingness to learn. However, many were not satisfied with their programming experiences, felt difficulty in programming, and evaluated their programming abilities as low. For the 'understanding of SW education curriculum', many recognized the necessity of SW education and understood that the allocated time was insufficient. Both positive and negative opinions were reported concerning the fact that SW education is conducted in practical arts. In comparison, many did not understand well about the concept and characteristics of SW education and the details of the curriculum. In relation to the 'understanding of SW education effects', many understood positively about all the effects presented in the questionnaire including problem solving abilities and creativity. In addition, significant differences were found among pre-service teachers' major categories regarding the programming learning experiences and the understanding of SW education curriculum and effects. Based on the results of the research, suggestions were made for the improvement of the pre-service teachers' SW education program.
