  • In the concept design stage of the product design process, it is desirable that a designer makes alternative designs sufficiently, examines and analyzes them, and finally determines an appropriate design. To efficiently investigate several alternative designs, it should be facilitated to modify the model and transfer the model data to analysis program. In this research, a concept design process for tank is automated using I-DEAS feature-based modeling system from SDRC. Additionally, the facility for the pre-estimation of the performance of product, the useful volume calculation, the mass calculation, the confirmation of the allowable workspae, and the interface to analysis propram are developed using API functions of OPen-link and Open-data. Graphic User Interface (GUI) makes it extrmely easy to utilize functions.

  • To design a drawing at construction sites or ship yards, generally, they exploit CAD program, such as AutoCAD. They also carry the printed drawings in the fields in order to refer the designs. However, the printed designs are easy to be damaged. In this paper, we propose the design of a management system for the CAD drawings on top of the smart operating systems of a smart device. The proposed system exploits the index file based on the Fixed GRID file in order to improve the display speed of the drawings.

  • It is necessary to perform the research works on the general structural designs and optimum structural designs of double hull tankers and bulk carriers due to the newly built Common Structural Rules(CSR). In this study, an optimum structural design of a mid-ship part of double hull oil tanker was carried out by using the CSR. An optimum structural design program was developed by using the Pareto optimal based multi-objective function method. The hull weight and fabrication cost obtained by the single and multi-objective function methods were compared with existing ship by the consideration of CSR and material cost which is recently increasing.

  • This paper presents an optimization process using Genetic Algorithm (GA) for minimum weight by selecting suitable standard sections from a specified list taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The stress constraints obeying AISC-LRFD (American Institute of Steel Construction-Load and Resistance Factor Design), lateral displacement constraints being the top and inter-storey drift, mid-span deflection constraints for the beams and geometric constraints are considered for optimum design by using GA that mimics biological processes. Optimum designs for three different space frames taken from the literature are carried out first without considering concrete slab effects in finite element analyses for the constraints above and the results are compared with the ones available in literature. The same optimization procedures are then repeated for the case of space frames with composite (steel and concrete) beams. A program is coded in MATLAB for the optimization processes. Results obtained in the study showed that consideration of the contribution of the concrete on the behavior of the floor beams results with less steel weight and ends up with more economical designs.

  • A procedure for the optimal design of high quality rectifiers is introduced in this paper. The procedure is capable of producing different optimal designs for the same rectifier based on the objective performance required from that rectifier. A FORTRAN-based computer system designed to solve large-scale optimization problems was used in this work to obtain the optimal designs. The optimization program uses Wolfe algorithm in conjunction with a quasi-Newton algorithm as well as a projected augmented Lagrangian algorithm to solve the highly nonlinear optimization problem. The paper also introduces a detailed analysis and an application of the procedure on a boost-type zero-current switch (ZCS) single-switch three-phase rectifier introduced recently in the literature. The obtained results are compared with popular simulation packages (i. e. PSPICE and SIMCAD) to support the validity of the proposed concept.

  • This study discussesresearch and development of large-sized 3D printers that can be applied to construction and civil engineering for various designs of protective casing on foam liner for concrete exteriors. The consistent use of concrete represents the current surroundings. However, concrete exteriors in Korea have not considered the regional characteristics, but the concrete has been poured solely for economical aspects for the last decade or two. There are many cases of poor installation and not enough design development projects to correct it. This study was conducted to apply various patterns, regional characteristics, and 3D printing for protective casing design for foam liner to create various designs for the concrete walls. Therefore, we started researching on a large 3D printer, and designed and developed this system. Considering the chronological process, the properties of concrete structures were identified, the application of designs for concrete in Korea and abroad and the 3D printing materials for the protective casing were surveyed and analyzed, and a stereotype was produced in the first year to study designs for the beauty of concrete surfaces. In the second year, images of regional characteristics were gathered, design ideas for regional promotion were derived, virtual images were produced along with design modeling to simulate the appearances, and verify the effect of application and promotion. Finally, in the third year, the 3D printer for concrete foam liner was constantly improved to analyze the 3D printing program and the various library elements to complete an actual large-sized 3D printer.

  • Computer automation, developed into a major element of modern industry, has also brought to great change in textile design field. Traditional textile designers have been created patterns by free hand drawing with brush. The modern textile designers create and present, on the other hand, printed or woven designs much more utilizing extensively the computer cad as design tool, creating various designs and colors as well as reducing the creative process. Vine pattern the worldwide known is not a pattern simplified from a specific plant but it is rather a plant imaginative pattern that has been developed from a winter plant found in ancient Egypt. Vine patterns express gorgeous curve lines, which are simple but decorative by connecting flowers or leaves with stems. These vine patterns have also been widely used for their decorative arts in Korea since early times because they were believe to a favorable auspice pattern symbolizing a long-life and fertility. In this study, the possibility of developing various designs is explored and presented by utilizing the motif of vine pattern in CAD program.

  • Among artworks of Shin Sa-Im-Dang, 'grass and insect painting' was drawn the rustic materials that cannot be seen without a loving attention because they are too small and insignificant creatures. Likewise, 'grass and insect painting' is work that can feel the wonder of life, simplicity, and womanly sensitivity unique. Therefore, beauty of Korea can be found through the works. It needs to develop high value-added culture products with her works which contained this unique beauty of Korea and artistic soul. In this study, I tried to develop the scarf textile designs which had Korean sentiment with the Shin Sa-Im-Dang's 'grass and insect painting' and to make the scarves with the textile designs developed. For the purpose, theoretical examination about her art world and artworks was first performed. And then six scarf textile designs which based on them were developed using adobe illustrator 10.0, computer design program. The textile designs developed were printed on 100% silk satin using textile digital printing system. Six scarves were made with them.

  • This study aimed to develop fashion designs by applying the PO (Provocative Operation) method as a 3D virtual clothing program and to derive the PO application method in fashion design. The first T-shirt design was presented as an existing thinking method, and the second design was developed by applying escape, reversal, exaggeration, distortion, and hopeful thinking techniques, which are techniques for 'provocation' of the PO method, to the first design. Thus, 18 T-shirt designs were developed as 3D virtual clothing, with 3 sets of 6 designs, including the 1st and 2nd designs. The method of using the 'provocation' techniques of the PO method in the development of fashion design derived from this was as follows. First, the 'escape' technique was designed in such a way that a part of the detail or structure was deleted, or a part of the structure or expression element of another item was applied. Second, the 'inversion' technique was expressed by inverting the position or shape of a detail or structure up, down, left, and right; fitting the structural detail or reversing the shape; or converting the structure and form. Third, the 'exaggeration' technique exaggerated the size, length, and volume of a structure's form or detail. Fourth, the 'distortion' technique was expressed as a distortion of lines or shapes or a visual distortion using the Trompe l'oeil technique. Fifth, the 'hopeful thinking' technique was developed and expressed from the idea of an hypothetical 'if' it was absurd, irrational, and unrealistic.
