Critical Thinking Disposition, Professional Self-Concept and Satisfaction of Clinical Practice in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 비판적 사고성향, 간호전문직 자아개념 및 임상실습만족도)

  • This study was conducted to identify the relationships among critical thinking disposition, professional self-concept and satisfaction of clinical practice in nursing students. The participants were 212 nursing students in Gyeonggy Province. Data was collected from June 1 to 12, 2015 using self-report questionnaires and analyzed through descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient with SPSS/win. 21.0. Critical thinking disposition, professional self-concept and satisfaction of clinical practice averaged 3.61(out of 5), 2.94(4), and 3.54(5), respectively. Significant positive correlations between critical thinking disposition and professional self-concept, satisfaction of clinical practice and professional self-concept were found, Therefore it is necessary to strengthen critical thinking and professional self-concept and improve satisfaction of clinical practice through effective educational program.

The Relation of Peer Group Caring Interaction, Professional Self-concept, and Nurses' Retention (병원 간호사의 동료간 돌봄-배려행위, 전문직 자아개념, 재직의도의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the relation of peer group caring interaction, Professional self-concept, and Nurses' Retention. The subjects of this study are 133 nurses who have worked for more than three months at five general hospitals with more than 300 beds in S city. As a result of the study, nurses' retenstion was higher than those of under 25 years of age between 30 and 35(F=3.313, p=.039).The professional self-concept of hospital nurses has been identified as an influence factor of intent to serve. Professional self-concepts have been shown to be better with higher peer-care and consideration(r=.397, P=.004). The peer group caring interaction behavior can occur not only between colleagues but also between managers. Therefore, it is necessary to proceed with the manager's group caring interaction as a follow-up study.

  • Recently, the domestic food service industry has grown in quantity and quality. Among them, the foodservice market in the group has grown to become infinitely competitive as well as the growth, and the role of the dietitian has been diversified. The professional self-concept refers to the feeling of self-own work as a professional person and his or her opinion, and the professional worker with a positive professional self-concept improves his / her ability to perform his or her job. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of dietitian's professional self-concept on job satisfaction and customer orientation. Among the subordinate factors of professional self-concept, leadership, usability, technology, and communication showed that technology and communication had a significant effect on job satisfaction. The results of this study are as follows. First, the effect of technology was found to be significant. Customer orientation is significantly influenced by communication and technology. In other words, the attitude of trying to satisfy the needs and desires of the customers as a nutritionist was found to be higher when the self-evaluating ability of the customer or other people is high.

Influence of Professional Self-concept, Ego-resilience, and Job Stress on Job Performance of Nurses who are Reemployed after Career Interruption (경력단절 후 재취업한 간호사의 전문직 자아개념, 자아탄력성, 직무 스트레스가 업무수행능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the influence of professional self-concept, ego-resilience, and job stress on job performance in reemployed nurses after career interruption. Methods: The participants were 207 nurses who worked at hospitals with more than 100 beds located in Seoul, Gyeonggi and Gangwon provinces. The nurses had experienced a career interruption of at least one year, and had less than five years of experience at the current workplace. The collected data were analyzed utilizing SPSS 24.0 program and using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. Results: The participants' job performance, professional self-concepts, ego-resilience, and job stress showed significant positive correlations. It was found that the professional self-concept, ego-resilience, and job stress had an effect on the participant's job performance in order, and explained 51.3% of variance in job performance. Conclusion: To improve the job performance of career disconnected nurses, it is necessary to reinforce job stress control, professional self-concept, and level of ego-resilience.

Neonatal Nurse's Professional Self-concept and Behavior to Protect Patient Privacy (신생아를 돌보는 간호사들의 전문직 자아개념 및 환자 프라이버시 보호행동)

  • Purpose: With the rapid increase in information technology in the medical environment, protection of patient's privacy is a crucial issue to hospital nurses. The purpose of this study was to determine neonatal nurses' perception and performance of behavior to protect patient privacy, and professional self-concept, and to investigate the relationships among these variables. Methods: The participants in this descriptive correlation study were 182 nurses in nursery and neonatal intensive care units using EMR or OCS in November, 2011. Results: Perception and performance averaged 4.61 and 4.04 (out of 5) respectively, and the average score for professional self-concept was 2.73 (out of 4). There was a significant difference between perception and performance. The performance of behaviour to protect patient privacy had a positive correlation with perception and professional self-concept. Multiple regression analysis showed that the key determinants of performance were recognition of necessity of patient privacy education, professional self-concept and perception, and these explained 36% of the total variance of performance. Conclusion: Study results indicate a need to establish policy to protect privacy of neonates and their families, and to develop educational programs to enhance neonatal nurses' perception and performance.

Effects of a Ready Planned Small Group Collaboration Learning Program through MBTI on Nursing Professional Self-Concept and Career Maturity of Nursing College Students (MBTI활용 소집단 협력 학습프로그램이 간호학생의 간호전문직 자아개념과 진로성숙에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a small group collaboration learning program through MBTI on nursing professional self-concept and career maturity of nursing college students. Method: A randomized control pre-post test experimental research design was used. There were 30 sophomore nursing students in the experimental group and 30 in the control group randomly assigned and randomly selected from the nursing program of T University in Daegu, Korea. The program through MBTI was developed by Kwon (2002) using a program by Shim and Kim (1997) as treatment. The experimental group received the program through MBTI for 30 hours (2 times a week for 15 weeks) while the control group received no treatment except a series of tests. Measures were the MBTI test, nursing professional self-concept scale, and career maturity scale. The data were analyzed with SPSS Win 17.0 program, chi-square test, and t-test. Result: The experimental group which received the program through MBTI had a higher score of nursing professional self-concept and career maturity change than the control group. Conclusion: A small group collaboration learning program through MBTI was effective in increasing nursing professional self-concept and career maturity of nursing college students.

An Analysis of the Factors Affecting Job Satisfaction in Clinical Dental Hygienists: Focusing on Schoolwork and General (임상 치과위생사의 직무만족도 영향요인 분석: 학업병행과 일반을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors affecting job satisfaction in dental hygienists with and without schoolwork, who form professional manpower in dental clinics, and provide basic data that could help develop detailed plans for reducing the turnover intention and improving job satisfaction. For data collection, convenience sampling was performed among clinical dental hygienists at dental clinics in Daejeon and Chungcheong and Gyeongsang Provinces from July 20 to September 20, 2019, and a self-administered questionnaire was used and the data were analyzed by T-test, One-way Anova, Pearson correlation, Stepwise multiple regression analysis, etc. using IBM SPSS/WIN 20.0. For the dental hygienists with schoolwork, job stress was negatively correlated with professional self-concept and job satisfaction, and professional self-concept was positively correlated with job satisfaction; for the dental hygienists without schoolwork, job stress was negatively correlated with professional self-concept and job satisfaction, and professional self-concept was positively correlated with job satisfaction. The factors affecting job satisfaction were professional self-concept, job stress, and age of ≥30 for the dental hygienists with schoolwork and professional self-concept, job stress, and the position as a middle manager for those without schoolwork. To put these results together, professional self-concept and job stress were factors affecting job satisfaction for dental hygienists with and without schoolwork. It is necessary to focus on the formation of good dental organizational culture through positive institutional support as well as through systematic establishment of professional self-concept.

A Comparative Study on Main Role, Professional Self Concept and Job Satisfaction of Public Health Nurses and Clinical Nurses (보건 간호사와 임상간호사의 주된 역할, 전문직 자아개념과 직무만족정도 비교)

  • This study was aimed at comparing and evaluating one main role, the professional self concept and job satisfaction of public health nurses and clinical nurses. Method: The data was collected from 72 nurses in 8 health centers and 86 nurses in 5 hospitals in Daegu city and Kyungpook province from May 5th to June 5th, 2001. This study was interviewed by trained social workers. The origin of questionnaires used in this study were PSCNI(Professional Self-Concept of Nurses Instrument) to measure the professional self concept of nurses and JDI(Job Descriptive Index) to measure the job satisfaction of nurses. The data was analyzed by SAS(version 6.12) and statistical methods used were Chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA(analysis of variables) and ANCOVA(analysis of covariate). Result: The findings of this study were as follows: 1. The most important domain in the main role of public health nurses were as counsellors, managers, mediators and evaluators. In clinical nurses, their main roles were, directors of nursing, researchers, spokesmans, and informers. 2. Public health nurses showed lower scores in the professional self concept of nurses than clinical nurses, what statistically significant tool was used to suggest this finding. 3. Public health nurses showed higher scores in job satisfaction than clinical nurses, but again, explain the tool used in these findings for give a rationals. 4. For public health nurses, general characteristics which affected professional self concept were age, educational level, and duration of job. In clinical nurses, the general characteristics which affected professional self concept were age, religion, marital status, and duration of job. 5. For public health nurses, there was no general characteristic which affected job satisfaction. In clinical nurses, the general characteristics which affected job satisfaction were age, religion, and duration of job. Conclusion: Nursing profession should give a training to competent nurses who can deliver high quality care to meet the needs of health consumers. The role of nurses has been expended and specialized as health conception has been changed in Korea.

Factors Influencing Disgust Sensitivity, Clinical Practice Stress, and Resilience in Professional Self-Concept among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 혐오민감성, 임상실습스트레스, 회복력이 전문직 자아개념에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors affecting nursing students' professional self-concept. Methods: A survey was conducted from August to October 2022, targeting 110 students in the 3rd and 4th grades at three universities. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression. Results: There were significant differences in professional self-concept according to application motivation (F=5.43, p=.006), school record (F=3.24, p=.043), major satisfaction (t=-6.38, p<.001), desired occupation (F=9.30, p<.001), participant health status (F=4.31, p=.016), character (F=25.29, p<.001), clinical practice satisfaction (t=-5.36, p<.001), and change of thinking about career path after clinical practice (t=2.78, p=.006). Professional self-concept showed significant correlations with clinical practice stress (r=-0.37, p<.001) and resilience (r=0.66, p<.001). The variables affecting nursing students' professional self-concept were resilience (β=.38, p<.001), character (β=.32, p<.001), major satisfaction (β=.28, p<.001), and clinical practice stress (β=-.18, p=.007); the explanatory power was 65%. Conclusion: A professional self-concept enhancement program should be developed to promote the establishment of a positive professional self-concept in nursing students. As a strategy, it should reflect individual personality tendencies, improve major satisfaction and resilience, and reduce clinical practice stress.

The Relationship Between Nurse-Nurse, Nurse-Doctor Cooperation and Professional Self-Concept: Nursing Students with Clinical Practice Experience (간호사-간호사, 간호사-의사 협력 및 전문직 자아개념 간의 관계: 임상실습 경험이 있는 간호대학생을 대상으로)

  • This study is a descriptive survey study to identify the relationship between nurse-nurse cooperation, nurse-doctor cooperation, and professional self-concept perceived by nursing students among nursing students with clinical practice experience. The subjects of the study were 140 nursing students, and the collected data were descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and regression analysis of the factors influencing professional self-concept. As a result of the study, professional self-concept was positively correlated with nurse-nurse cooperation and nurse-doctor cooperation, and the influencing factor of professional self-concept was nurse-nurse cooperation, with explanatory power of 48.0%. Therefore, in order to improve the nursing professional self-concept of nursing students, it is necessary to develop an educational program to enhance cooperation between professionals to promote the cooperative relationship between nurses and nurses, and to develop a curriculum for the development and application of simulation scenarios for cooperation between professionals based on clinical field cases.
