  • Advanced glycation end products(AGEs) are largly involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. It is obvious that inhibition of AGEs formation is important in preventing the occurrence and progression of diabetic nephropathy. In diabetes, this reaction is greatly accerated and is important in the pathogenesis of diabetic complications, especially diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, to seek possible AGEs inhibitors in herbal medicines, unprocessed - and processed Magnolia Bark were examined in vitro as basic data for aniaml experiment. The content of magnolol in unprocessed Magnolia Bark was $0.796{\pm}0.072%$, and after processing was decreased to $0.586{\pm}0.101%(p<0.01)$. The content of AGEs was measured by their intrinsic fluorescence. The $IC_{50}({\mu}g/ml)$ values of aminoguanidine, unprocessed- and procesled Magnolia Bark are $38.845{\pm}8.36{\mu}g/ml$, $54.264{\pm}3.153{\mu}g/ml$ and $27.882{\pm}1.836{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. This result means that prcessed Magnolia Bark was more effective than aminoguanidine, as positive control.

  • This paper is concerned about how to increase household income by cultivation of specialty herbal medicines in JeonBuk Province, which is summarized as below: 1. Specialty plant cultivation is considered appropriate in this province, since the quality of soil is good and sandy, together with the warmer climate and little rainfall. 2. It is recommended for the efficiency of production that the cultivation is performed item by item in large scales, for which it is desirable to organize working group unit for each specialty plant item. 3. It is suggested to establish a special union, such as a venture company model, for the effective processing of specialty plants into herbal medicines. 4. It is desirable that the processed herbal medicine products are supplied to consumers via a direct distribution route. 5. It is supposed possible that foods And drugs can be further developed from herbal medicines, which can make extra business.

Therefore, to seek possible AGEs inhibitors in herbal medicines, unprocessed - und processed Puerariae Radix were tested. The inhibitory effect on AGEs formation was slightly increased through processing. Unprocessed-, processed Puerariae Radix and puerarin showed potential inhibitory action than that of positive control, amino guanidine HCI.

  • Objectives : We have been used many herbal medicines after processing to improve the effect, decrease toxicity and side-effect, and change property. We have studied the physico-chemical change and HPLC pattern of Morindae Radix by means of processing method. Methods : This study was investigated the contents of loss on drying, residue on ignition, residue on acid insoluble ignition, 50% ethanol extract and HPLC pattern of Morindae Radix(Morinda officinalis How.) by processed and non-processed. We have conducted Morindae Radix and Damnacanthi Radix which is circulated in herbal medicine market by forgery. Processed Morindae Radix was prepared by heating of added to salt(SP), liquor(LP) and Glycyrrhizae Radix solution(GP) for 20-40 minutes. Results and Conclusions : From this analysis, we found that the content of 50% ethanol extract was increased by processing method. And we were detected distinguishable marker of processed and non-processed from Morindae Radix(Morinda officinalis How.) by HPLC pattern analysis.

  • Aristolochic acid (AA) included in the plants Aristolochiaceae have been well known to be nephrotoxic and carcinogenic inducer and to cause renal disease such as Chinese Herb Nephropathy (CHN). In this study, we used a high performance liquid chromatopaphy-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS) under the positive ion detection mode for the quantitative change of aristolochic acid-I and-II (AA-I and AA-II) in Aristolochiaceae (Aristolochia contorta Bunge, Aristolochia debilis Sieb. et Zucc., Aristolochia fangchi Wu), some related plants (Cocculus trilobus De candolle, Inula helenium Linne, Saussurea lappa Clarke), and its prescriptions (防己茯笭湯, 定喘散) with or without processing. Here, the processing methods and prescriptions in oriental medicine were generally used to alleviate toxicity or alter property of herbal medicines. However, the concentrations of AA-I and AA-II were highly determined in processed material extracts rather than unprocessed those, not measured in some related plants. Also, the concentrations of AA-I and AA-II even at the prescriptions mixed the plants of Aristolochiaceae were detected to range from 0.73 to 2.53 ppm. Thus, the present results suggest that the content of AA-I and AA-II contained to plants of Aristolochiaceae was not reduced by the processing methods or prescriptions which can induce the physico-chemical change and pharmacological transformation in traditional herbal medicines.

  • In this study, the effect of functional substances such as polyphenols and flavonoids contained in large quantities in red ginseng and herbal medicines on the antioxidant activity properties and flavor effect were investigated by increasing the content and activity of functional ingredients by convert red ginseng through a steaming heat-drying process compared to the traditional dry processing method of ginseng and herbal medicines. According to the experimental results, the addition of pre-heat treatment significantly increased antioxidant properties such as DPPH radical scavenging ability, polyphenols, and flavonoids. In addition, during the steaming and heat-dried red ginseng manufacturing process, the amino-carbonyl browning reaction was promoted, resulting in increased brownness and a savory flavor. However, the content of ginsenosides, the main medicinal ingredient in red ginseng, became the main cause of the bitter and harsh taste. In addition, the bitter and harsh taste of red ginseng has been significantly improved by roasting and producing powder, but on the other hand, Radix Angelicae sinensis, polymorphic angelica and Peony, which are used as main medicinal ingredients in oriental medicine for nutritional tonic prescriptions such as 10 herbal medicine and 4 herbal medicine have a very strong herbal medicine-specific flavor and have a bitter and harsh taste. It is so strong that in order to use it as an instant extraction material, it was reviewed that a steaming and heating manufacturing method was needed during the manufacturing process.

  • Objectives This study was conducted to investigate the management status of extramural herbal dispensary facility, which could serve as a foundation for further research and policy establishment.Method According to herbal dispensary data collected by Ministry of Health and Welfare, 78 sites were confirmed among 1,160 sites which checked extramural herbal dispensary facility. We carried out a survey on them. The survey consisted of 42 questions including general provisions, personnel management, spaces and facilities, equipment and utensils, procedure requirement for production and/or processing. Results From their responses, hygiene was regarded generally admittable. In personnel management, some answers that herbal medicines were prepared not by Korean medicine doctor or pharmacist, but by general worker. On preparation method, dosage frequency and volume were different among preparation facilities. Regarding facility management, prescription inspection was substantially carried out in many extramural preparation facilities, however, some of them was not. Conclusion There was a need for regulation of detailed management including facility, preparation, personnel management, etc., of extramural preparation facility. Furthermore, There was also a need for standardization of procedure on decoction, water management, medicinal herbs management, etc.
