Inhibitory effect of natural extract mixtures on microbial growth and lipid oxidation of sausages during storage

  • Large amounts of additives are used during meat product processing to maintain product quality and shelf life. With the growing interest in healthy foods, natural plant-based additives are being used as alternatives to synthetic additives. In this study, six types of natural extracts with excellent antibacterial activity were selected, and their antibacterial and antioxidant activities against four types of pathogens were evaluated in various combinations. In addition, the pH, color, amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and growth of pathogenic microorganisms were analyzed during the storage of sausages treated with various combinations of these extracts. The natural extract mixtures exhibited different antibacterial activities, depending on the combination. Compared to grapefruit seed extract, a mixture of natural extracts extracted with ethanol (M4) reduced the Escherichia coli content by more than 99.9% after 8 days of storage and slowed the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella spp. by more than 80% after 14 days. Compared to untreated (NC) and grapefruit extract (PC)-treated sausages, sausages treated with the natural extract mixtures showed a significant decrease in CIE L* and an increase in CIE a* and CIE b* (p < 0.05). The pH value was significantly lower in sausages containing natural extract mixtures than in the NC and PC sausages (p < 0.05). The natural plant extract mixtures significantly prevented lipid oxidation (p < 0.05). In summary, different types of natural extract mixtures have a synergistic effect when used together, suggesting that natural preservatives can generally inhibit the growth of microorganisms and oxidation of processed meat.

Polyphenol-rich fraction from Ecklonia cava (a brown alga) processing by-product reduces LPS-induced inflammation in vitro and in vivo in a zebrafish model

  • Ecklonia cava is a common edible brown algae that is plentiful in Jeju Island of Republic of Korea. Polyphenols from E. cava have strong anti-inflammatory activity. However, a large number of the by-products from E. cava processing are discarded. In the present study, to utilize these by-products, we assessed the anti-inflammatory activity of the polyphenol-rich fraction (PRF) from E. cava processing by-product (EPB) in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Four compounds, namely eckol, eckstolonol, dieckol, and phlorofucofuroeckol-A, were isolated and identified from PRF. We found that PRF suppressed the production of nitric oxide (NO), inducible nitric oxide synthase, and cyclooxygenase-2 in the LPS-induced cells. Furthermore, the protective effect of PRF was investigated in vivo in LPS-stimulated inflammation zebrafish model. PRF had a protective effect against LPS-stimulated toxicity in zebrafish embryos. In addition, PRF inhibited LPS-stimulated reactive oxygen species and NO generation. According to the results, PRF isolated from EPB could be used as a beneficial anti-inflammatory agent, instead of discard.

내장형 시스템의 신속한 설계를 위한 컴포넌트 지원 Statechart 도구 구현 (Implementation of Component Support Statechart Tool for a Rapid Design of the Embedded System)

  • The rapid design of the embedded system is crucial for improving the product’s competitiveness. Existing statechart tools used for designing the embedded system rely on the copy and paste of the statechart for reuse. However, such method has a major drawback of wasting both time and cost of the system developer. This paper implements the component supporting tool. A tool that makes efficient reuse of a statechart by adding a component function to the existing functions is implemented in this paper. Also, to add a component function, this paper restructured the contract as protocol of the inter-component. The implemented tool helps not only reduce the life cycle of a product, but also enhance a product’s competitiveness by supporting the product’s time-to-market.

  • This study describes the cold stamping process design procedure to secure the formability and dimensional accuracy of the automotive structural component fabricated by 1.5GPa grade ultra-high strength steel sheet. The target product is selected as the front side rear lower member which is the most important energy absorption part in the frontal impact condition. To secure the product quality, an intermediate product shape is added while considering the low elongation and high strength characteristics of 1470Mart. The sequential optimization procedure of the intermediate product shape, the fine dimensional quality is then achieved without any crack or wrinkling. The cold stamping method with ultra-high strength steel sheets is validated by conducting the die tryout of the front side rear lower member.

  • This paper addresses the product shape modification for spring-back reduction in the sheet metal forming process of the cabin sunroof which is applied to the construction equipment. Initially, the anisotropic material properties are measured in order to calculate the degree of spring-back by the numerical simulation of the sheet metal forming process. To reduce the spring-back of the stamped part, several design modifications are suggested according to the geometrical bead arrangement on the planar region. The degrees of spring-back are confirmed for various product designs with different use of the geometrical bead. Finally, the spring-back improvement was validated by manufacturing the tryout product with the modified die set for the optimized product shape.

  • Fiber laser welding was performed on SUS Materials metal bellows. The results can be summarized as follows: When we tried to change welding focus location. we get the best welding line when focus location placed 0mm. In product welding, We could make a satisfactory product in constant area by applying optimized conditions and show a table that is able to help producer easily to apply it to manufacturing. In comparison with existing TIG and plasma welding, welded bellows by fiber laser has faster processing speed, smaller thermal effect, very narrow welding area and fine surface.

  • A lot of sludges occur during an activated sludge treatment process of the washing wastewater and by-product waste in the cuttlefish processing manufacture. The sludges give also out a bad smell, and their amicable reclamation is very difficult because of the limited area of the filling-up. To reduce the heavy weight and large volume of the sludges, they was burning up. After the burning up at 350t for 2hrs the weight(volume) of the sludges were reduced to 5% level of the initial value. In contents of the bad heavy metals for human after the burning up, cadmium and lead metal were slightly detected, while mercury and the bad others not detected.

  • Automatic product system is gradually increasing according to development of industrial society. On-line measurement makes a important role in view of economic and effective side in industrial product system. Syncronization system is developed to measure screw thread which is rotating. In-process measuring of rotating body have a lot of difficuties even thoufht using various method containing high speed camera. So, now we suggest one of the new method which is not so expansive. In this study, digital value was produced through the image processing algorithm from acquired orignal image. As a result, we have a good agreement between measuring values calculated from image conture and measuring values acquired from profile project by means of experiment, respectively.

회전압출다이를 사용한 헬리컬 핀붙이 원형단면 제품의 압출가공에 관한 연구 (A Study on Extrusion Process of Cylindrical Product with Helical Fins Using Rotating Extrusion Die)

  • A new extrusion process of the circular section product with helical fins could be developed by rotating extrusion die. The twisting of extruded product is caused by the twisted conical die surface connecting the die entrance section and the die exit section linearly. But, until now, because the process has used fixed extrusion die, it needs high pressure in order to twist billet and form fin shape on the surface of billet. So, during extruding billet, in order not to twist billet, the extrusion die is needed to rotate itself instead of twisting of billet. It is known that it is possible to reduce extrusion load of product with helical fins by analysis and experiments using rotating die. And it is known that, through the extrusion load analysis by $DEFORM^{TM}-3D$ software, optimal rotational velocity of rotating die can be obtained according to reduction ratio of area and twisted angle of die. And experiments and analysis using rotating extrusion die show that the twisted angle of product can be controlled by twisted angle of extrusion helical die and the rotational velocity of extrusion helical die.
