  • This paper presents a parallel processing searcher structure for the initial synchronization of a direct sequence ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) system, which is suitable for the digital implementation of baseband functionalities with a 1.32 Gsample/s chip rate analog-to-digital converter. An initial timing acquisition algorithm and a data demodulation method are also studied. The proposed searcher effectively acquires initial symbol and frame timing during the preamble transmission period. A hardware efficient receiver structure using 24 parallel digital correlators for binary phase-shift keying DS-UWB transmission is presented. The proposed correlator structure operating at 55 MHz is shared for correlation operations in a searcher, a channel estimator, and the demodulator of a RAKE receiver. We also present a pseudo-random noise sequence generated with a primitive polynomial, $1+x^2+x^5$, for packet detection, automatic gain control, and initial timing acquisition. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed parallel processing searcher employing the presented pseudo-random noise sequence outperforms that employing a preamble sequence in the IEEE 802.15.3a DS-UWB proposal.

  • Web Service technologies make the automation of business activities that are distributed across multiple enterprises possible. Existing extended transaction protocols typically resort to compensation actions to regain atomicity and consistency. A reservation-based transaction protocol is proposed to reduce high compensation risk. However, for a serial long running transaction processing, the resource that is reserved in the early stage may be released due to resource holding time expires. Therefore, our analysis theoretically illustrates a scheduling scheme that tries to prevent the loss of resource holding as well as gain an optimized execution plan with minimum compensation cost. In order to estimate cost of different schedules, we set up a costing model and cost metric to quantize compensation risk.

  • Photonics offers a solution to data communication between logic devices in computing systems; however, the integration of photonic components into electronic chips is rather limited due to their size incompatibility. Dimensions of photonic components are therefore being forced to be scaled down dramatically to achieve a much higher system performance. To integrate these nano-photonic components, surface plasmon-polaritons and/or energy transfer mechanisms are used to form plasmonic chips. In this paper, the operating principle of plasmonic waveguide devices is reviewed within the mid-infrared spectral region at the 2 ${\mu}m$ to 5 ${\mu}m$ range, including lossless signal propagation by introducing gain. Experimental results demonstrate that these plasmonic devices, of sizes approximately half of the operating free-space wavelengths, require less gain to achieve lossless propagation. Through optimization of device performance by means of methods such as the use of new plasmonic waveguide materials that exhibit a much lower minimal loss value, these plasmonic devices can significantly impact electronic systems used in data communications, signal processing, and sensors industries.

  • Recently, side scan sonar system has been developed and operated to survey cable laying, sunken bodies, geometry of sea bottom and so on. It uses the acoustic signals, which are emitted from two transducer arrays, left and right sides, to get geometric information of the specified area. This system consists of transceiver board, towed body, deck unit and GPS receiver. The transceiver board, nested in a watertight canister, controls the transmitting and receiving of the acoustic pulses from transducer arrays. After receiving the scattered signals, it processes BP(Band Pass) filtering, AGC(Automatic Gain Control), TVG(Time Varying Gain) and Heterodyne. The deck init has the signal processing part, A/D converter, power supplier, and real-time monitoring part. The towed body has been designed to satisfy the optimal hydrodynamic behavior during towing, In this paper, brief introductions on the design theory of transceiving part and some results from the field which have been operated recently will be introduced.

  • The neural network method has been introduced to design a controller for linear motor feed system and system operation status was monitored. It is most difficult to achieve controller gain tuning because of the information limit. Regardless of the system structure, conventional control gain could be adjusted minimizing the resulting error for both position and velocity using the proposed method. Slight performance deterioration was observed at the small value of training epoch. Different controller performance for position was observed with respect changed sampling time. Actuated system performance was monitored using neural network signal processing and operational status was predicted with the rate of 80% approximately.

  • An accurate gain-of-two amplifier, which successfully reduces the capacitor mismatch error is proposed. This amplifier has similar circuit complexity and linearity improvement to the capacitor error-averaging technique, but operates with two clock phases just like the conventional pipeline stage. This makes it suitable for high-speed, high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). Two ADC architectures employing the proposed accurate gain-of-two amplifier are also presented. The simulation results show that the proposed ADCs can achieve 15-bit linearity with 8-bit capacitor matching.

  • In this paper, we present a method to improve the performance of the four transmit antenna quasi-orthogonal space-time block code (STBC) in the coded system. For the four transmit antenna case, the quasi-orthogonal STBC consists of two symbol groups which are orthogonal to each other, but intra group symbols are not. In uncoded system with the matched filter detection, constellation rotation can improve the performance. However, in coded systems, its gain is absorbed by the coding gain especially for lower rate code. We propose an iterative decoding method to improve the performance of quasi-orthogonal codes in coded systems. With conventional quasi-orthogonal STBC detection, the joint ML detection can be improved by iterative processing between the demapper and the decoder. Simulation results shows that the performance improvement is about 2dB at 1% frame error rate.

  • Intracavity second harmonic generation of diode pumped solid state lasers in the visible and ultraviolet regions provide efficient, compact and robust light sources for various applications, such as optical data storage, material processing, spectroscopy and bioanalysis. Advantages of neodymium vanadate (Nd:$YVO_4$) as a gain medium for intracavity-doubled lasers over Nd:YAG lie in the facts that the gain spectrum consists of a single line with short absorption depth, and that the stimulated emission cross sections are larger. • Large gains in speech intelligibility can be obtained using the SNR-based binary mask approach. This approach retains the time-frequency (T-F) units of the mixture signal, where the target signal is stronger than the interference noise (masker) (e.g., SNR > 0 dB), and removes the T-F units, where the interfering noise is dominant. This paper introduces two alternative binary masks based on the distortion constraints to improve the speech intelligibility. The distortion constraints are induced by a gain function for estimating the short-time spectral amplitude. One binary mask is designed to retain the speech underestimated (T-F) units while removing the speech overestimated (T-F)units. The other binary mask is designed to retain the noise overestimated (T-F) units while removing noise underestimated (T-F) units. Listening tests with oracle binary masks were conducted to assess the potential of the two binary masks in improving the intelligibility. The results suggested that the two binary masks based on distortion constraints can provide large gains in intelligibility when applied to noise-corrupted speech.
