  • This study examined the relationships among patient safety competence, critical thinking disposition, problem-solving competence, and self-efficacy of clinical nurses to identify the factors influencing the patient safety competence. A convenience sample of 373 nurses working in 4 general hospitals in a Metropolitan area in Korea was selected. After obtaining IRB approval, data collection was done with a structured self-administered questionnaire from October 14th to November 4th, 2014. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis using the SPSS WIN 21.0 program. The participants showed a moderate level of patient safety competence ($3.75{\pm}0.37$), of critical thinking disposition ($3.43{\pm}0.27$), of problem solving competence ($3.54{\pm}0.30$), and of self-efficacy ($3.58{\pm}0.47$). The patient safety competence of the participants showed a significant correlation with the critical thinking disposition (r=.493, p<.001), problem solving competence (r=.616, p<.001), and self-efficacy (r=.475, p<.001). The significant factors influencing the patient safety competence were problem solving competence (${\beta}=.403$, p<.001), self-efficacy (${\beta}=.156$, p=.005), critical thinking disposition (${\beta}=.130$, p=.018), and having the experience of reporting patient safety accidents (${\beta}=.137$, p=.002). The results suggest that educational programs to enhance the critical thinking disposition, problem-solving competence, and self-efficacy would develop the patient safety competence of clinical nurses. In addition, more effort should be placed into reinforcing the patient safety competence by activating the report of patient safety accidents.

  • This study was a descriptive research investigating the impact of simulation-based learning on the problem solving process and clinical competence of new nurses. The 202 participants were new nurses who have provided nursing care for less than 12 months have experienced simulation-based learning more than once in their undergraduate courses. This study found that the number of times participants have experienced the simulation-based learning had no correlation with their problem solving process and clinical competence, but simulation design features correlated with their problem solving process and clinical competence. The results of clustering analysis that examined differences in the effects on problem solving process and clinical competence by classifying simulation design features by clustering also showed significant differences. This study has confirmed the importance of simulation design to simulation-based learning in nursing education. We hope that the findings of the study will be used for effective operation of simulation-based learning. In the future, objective assessment methods will be required to evaluate the effects of simulation-based learning provided in undergraduate courses on nurses' clinical competence.

  • In recent domestic and international curriculum it is emphasized that students should acquire 'problem solving' competence as a member of knowledge information society and various programming educational methods of improving problem solving competence have been studied. But there is no difference between programming problems in related research and traditional programming courses. Most methods of solving problems are focused on acquiring specific languages rather than enhancing problem solving ability. In this research, we developed a suitable programming problems and curriculum for fostering problem solving competence and designed and developed teaching and learning contents based on PSA(Problem Solving Activities). Furthermore, we obtained meaningful results of improving learners' problem solving ability and logical thinking ability by operating curriculum with developed contents as learning materials. The results of this research are expected to be used as a reference model or basic teaching materials for developing and operating the programming teaching and learning contents or curriculum to enhance problem solving competence.

  • This study empirically examines the relationship between the education and competence, age and competence, and the returns to skills in the labor market in different countries using PIAAC data. The main focus is notable characteristics of Korea compared to other PIAAC participant countries. Contrary to young students who have highest scores in international tests, Korean adults made mediocre performances in all three areas, numeracy, literacy, and problem solving. It turns out that the correlation between educational level and competence is weak in Korea compared to other countries, whereas the depreciation of competence from aging is strongest. In terms of labor market returns, literacy skills get highest returns while problem-solving skills get lowest in Korea. In contrast, the numeracy skills get highest returns, and the problem-solving skills have high returns than those of Korea in many other countries When we include three skills in the Mincer wage equation, the returns to problem solving skills have negative effect in Korea, which is rarely found in other countries. These results implies that problem-solving skills are not much appreciated in the Korean labor market and Korean adults have few opportunities of accumulating human capital after finishing formal education. Korean need to rethink the ways to accumulate human capital and enhance economic performances to overcome high deprecation in human capital after formal education and to make the labor market more efficient in a sense that adults' competence results in the due economic returns.
