Inchon Port is the second largest import-export port of Korea, and has the point at issue such as the excessive logistics cost because of the limits of handling capacity and the chronic demurrage. There are few research activities on the analysis and improvement of the whole port operation, because Inchon Port not only has the dual dock system and various facilities but also handles a various kind of cargo. The purpose of this paper is to develop the simulation program as a long-term strategic support tool, considering the dual dock system and the TU(Terminal Operation Company) system executed since March, 1997 in Inchon Port. The basic input parameters such as arrival intervals, cargo tons, service rates are analyzed and the probability density functions for these parameters are estimated. The main mechanism of simulation model is the discrete event-driven simulation and the next-event time advancing. The program is executed based on the knowledge base and database. From the simulation model, it is possible to estimate the demurrage status through analyzing various scenarios and to establish the long-term port strategic plan.

To define an analytical model for a structural system or to assess damage in the system, system identification(SI) methods have been developed and widely applied. The paper presents a method of determining optimal sensor location(OSL) based on the maximum likelihood approach, which is applicable to modal SI methods. To estimate unknown parameters reliably, it is necessary that the information provided by the experiment should be maximized. By applying the Cramer-Rao inequality, a Fisher information matrix in terms of the probability density function of measurements is obtained from a lower bound of the estimation error. The paper also proposes a scheme of determining of OSL on damaged structures by using maximum strain energy factor. Simulation studies have carried out to investigate the proposed OSL algorithm for both undamaged and damaged structures.
Quantizers for digital coding systems are usually optimized with respect to a model of the probability density function of the random variable to be quantized. Thus a mismatch of the quantizer relative to the actual statistics of the random variable may be unavoidable. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of mismatched quantizers. For the modeling of the source statistics, various types of the Weibull distribution are used, and the optimization of the quantizer is carried with respect to the minimum mean-square error (mse) criterion. The goal of this paper is to find an estimate formula for the mismatched quantizer on Weibull sources.
The numerical model predicting the behaviours of submerged mound constructed by dredged material is developed in this paper. The model is based on the Bailard's sediment transport formula, Stokes' second-order wave theory and the sediment balance equation. Nonlinear partial differential equation which is the same form as convection-dispersion equation which represents change of bed section can be obtained by substituting sediment transport equation for equation of sediment conservation. By this process, the analytical solution by which the characteristic of the behaviours of submerged mound can be estimated is derived by probably combining the convention coefficient and the dispersion coefficient governing the behaviours of submerged mound and the probability density function representing the wave characteristics. The validity of the analytical solution is verified by comparing the analytical solution which is assumed to estimate the movement rate submerged mound by bed-load with the field data of the past and its characteristic is analyzed quantitatively by obtaining the mean of the dispersion coefficient representing the extent of the decrease rate of the submerged mound height.
Defect size distribution is a probability density function for the defects that occur on wafers or glasses during semiconductor/LCD fabrication. It is one of the most important information to estimate manufacturing yield using well-known statistical estimation methods. The defects are detected by automatic optical inspection (AOI) facilities. However, the data that is provided from AOI is not accurate due to resolution of AOI and its defect detection mechanism. It causes distortion of defect size distribution and results in wrong estimation of the manufacturing yield. In this paper, I suggest a size conversion method and a maximum likelihood estimator to overcome the vague defect size information of AOI. The methods are verified by the Monte Carlo simulation that is constructed as similar as real situation.

Helical gear system is widely used to transmit heavy duty power with harmonies and silences between parallel shafts. This paper predicts a life with Weibull distribution and estimates a reliability based on recycle principle of helical gear systems. 2-parameter Weibull distribution is generally adopted to estimate the mechanical life and the reliability of most gear systems, because this Weibull distribution is proper to explain a characteristics or a life of parts of gear systems with linearity of probability density data on weibull data sheet. For a high reliability, this paper estimates a number of overhaul times and a number of needed substitutes (exchange attachment,1 or parts) with following renewal theory, One is make an exchange of whole module include failure attachments/parts and second estimating method is only exchange of a failure attachments / parts.
This paper describes probabilistic characteristics of damping in a tall building based on the results of full-scale measurement. It is found, through statistical analysis of the damping data, that the probability density function(PDF) of damping at the high amplitude plateau can be well represented by Normal distribution (Gaussian distribution). A stochastic damping model is proposed to estimate amplitude-dependent damping for practical application.
Closed-form solutions are analytically derived for stochastic properties of earthquake ground motion fields, which are conditioned by an observed time series at certain observation sites and are characterized by spectra with uncertainties. The theoretical framework presented here can estimate not only the expectations of such simulated earthquake ground motions, but also the prediction errors which offer important information for the field of engineering. Before these derivations are made, the theory of conditional random fields is summarized for convenience in this study. Furthermore, a method for stochastic interpolation of power spectra is explained.

This study introduced a Bayesian based frequency analysis in which the statistical trend seasonal analysis for hydrologic extreme series is incorporated. The proposed model employed Gumbel and GEV extreme distribution to characterize extreme events and a fully coupled bayesian frequency model was finally utilized to estimate design rainfalls in Seoul. Posterior distributions of the model parameters in both trend and seasonal analysis were updated through Markov Chain Monte Carlo Simulation mainly utilizing Gibbs sampler. This study proposed a way to make use of nonstationary frequency model for dynamic risk analysis, and showed an increase of hydrologic risk with time varying probability density functions. In addition, full annual cycle of the design rainfall through seasonal model could be applied to annual control such as dam operation, flood control, irrigation water management, and so on. The proposed study showed advantage in assessing statistical significance of parameters associated with trend analysis through statistical inference utilizing derived posterior distributions.

Blind source separation by independent component analysis (ICA) has applied in signal processing, telecommunication, and image processing to recover unknown original source signals from mutually independent observation signals. Neural networks are learned to estimate the original signals by unsupervised learning algorithm. Because the outputs of the neural networks which yield original source signals are mutually independent, then mutual information is zero. This is equivalent to minimizing the Kullback-Leibler convergence between probability density function and the corresponding factorial distribution of the output in neural networks. In this paper, we present a learning algorithm using information theory and higher order statistics to solve problem of blind source separation. For computer simulation two deterministic signals and a Gaussian noise are used as original source signals. We also test the proposed algorithm by applying it to several discrete images.
