The purpose of this paper was to review NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, which is an updated version of the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989). With releasing the previous version, NCTM has affected mathematics education in other countries as well as in the United States. The Principles and Standards for School Mathematics was revised in line with current technology and requirement of students, who will live in the 21st century. However, many mathematics teachers and educators do not know about the contents of this new version even though most of them already know what the version is about. In this paper, the author addressed the contents of the version with his personal opinions and suggested some lessons from the version.
For the first time ever in its history, the United States has a national version for K-12 mathematics programs, the Com-mon Core State Standards for Mathematics. Since its final version appeared in 2010 in the United States, the Common Core State Standards have started getting much attention from the Korean mathematics and mathematics education communities. Although attempts have been made to translate the original text of the stan-dards, the information such as the paradigm shift that led to the development of the standards, design principles and a comparison with the NCTM Standards would aid understating the standards in the intended way and avoiding unnecessary confusion.
Common Core State Standards for Mathematics(CCSSM) is a blueprint for school mathematics in 2010s of the United States. CCSSM can be divided into two major parts, the standards for mathematical content and the standards for mathematical practice. This study focused on the latter. Mathematical practice comes from the mathematical process in 'Principles and standards for school mathematics(NCTM, 2000)' as well as the mathematical proficiency in 'Adding it up(NRC, 2001)'. It is composed of eight standards which mathematically proficient students are expected to do. From Korean perspective, it can also be comparable with the mathematical process which contains mathematical problem solving, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical communication and was provided by the 2009 revised national curriculum for mathematics in Korea. However, few focused the standards for mathematical practice among the studies related to CCSSM in Korea. Moreover, there is a study that even ignores the existence of the standards for mathematical practice itself. This study aims to understand the standards for mathematical practice through analysing the document of CCSSM and its successive materials for implementing the CCSSM. This understanding will help effective implementation of the mathematical process in Korea.
Main stream of ’90s mathematics education in the U.S must be the NCTM Standards. Since it was published in 1989, much focus has put on it and numerous research has been tried to apply it to real mathematics classes. But there hasn't always good fame. Some schools have already mathematics. NCTM(1998), Standards and Principles for School Mathematics: Discussion Draft taken the curriculum based on it and recently the negative results have been exposed. Not a few parents, teachers and experts became to be worry about that. In this situation, I suppose it is worth to review the original purpose of Standards, look into the recent problems related to it's application and think of improvement or alternatives. This article mainly includes first two issues and particularily considers what problems are to have to be reconsidered in Korea. The following four are what I draw as problem: Basic operations; constructivism;texts and work books;trial and error strategy and group activity.
Geometry is one of the important parts of Chinese school mathematics. There is a large difference in teaching and contents (standards, curriculum) between the US and China. Many mathematics educators in both countries are trying to reform the instruction of geometry and have made some progress. Close attention has been given to the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (NCTM 2000), in which we have found many good ideas. In this paper, we introduce new developments of school geometry in China and have made some comparisons between the US and China. The new technology is becoming popular step by step in Chinese high schools. We believe we should learn from each other and exchange the ideas. In doing this mathematics teaching will be improved.
The purpose of this article is to devise the activities based on van Hiele levels of geometric thought using computer software, Geometer\\\\`s Sketchpad(GSP) as a tool. The most challenging task facing teachers of geometry is the development of student facility for understanding geometric concepts and properties. The National Council of teachers of Mathematics(Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics, 1991; Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, 2000) and the National Re-search Council(Hill, Griffiths, Bucy, et al., Everybody Counts, 1989) have supported the development of exploring and conjecturing ability for helping students to have mathematical power. The examples of the activities built is GSP for students ar designed to illustrate the ways in which van Hiele\\\\`s model can be implemented into classroom practice.
In this study, on the basis of the seventh national mathematics curriculum, the achievement standards were developed to specify the objectives and contents of teaching-learning and the assessment standards were also developed to differentiate students' levels of achievement at school mathematics. The achievement standards were developed on the following guidelines; 1) to present the minimum standards based on the national curriculum, 2) to develop the standards based on the order of curriculum, 3) to suggest the minimum but ultimate achievement target, 4) to comprise not only of the intellectual but also of psychological spheres such as knowledge, function, attitude, aptitude, etc., and 5) to suggest the standards comprehensively and concretely. The standards were developed on the basis of the middle areas of contents of the curriculum in order not to be too comprehensive, nor to be too detailed. Learning activities, on the other hand, were provided for the assistance of instructions with emphasis on creativity rather than on the routine instruction. The assessment standards were established based on the following principles; 1) to establish the assessment methods, contents, and situations which are to be used for assessment, 2) to establish the criteria of classifying the assessed into the upper, intermediate and lower levels, 3) to develop the assessment standards in a proportionate balance to achievement standards, 4) to establish the intermediate level as a standard, and 5) to establish the minimum level in the contents, concepts, values and attitudes of basic learning. This study also suggested the exemplary test items including short-answer and open-ended questions while putting emphasis on students' real performance to increase their ability in solving problems rather than in calculating. In addition to the test items, it introduced the grading system developed to grade the items with concrete guidelines and to report students' achievement on doing mathematics.
It is the 6th curriculum that first officially mentioned the use of calculators in elementary mathematics education in Korea. Since then, the curriculum has been more widely used than in the beginning. However, in actual textbooks, it is still not enough to see the utilization situation, and guidance in this textbook is very scarce. In particular, there is no relevant study that meets the standards of achievement of the curriculum. The purpose of this study is to investigate the contents of the research on the use of the calculator in the course of the curriculum change after the 6th curriculum, and to present the complex calculation, mathematical concept, mathematical principles and rules, mathematical problem solving. In addition, the course is presented in the textbooks that are appropriate for the achievement criteria and the application process for each topic.

2011
In this study, the 2011 elementary school mathematics curriculum was analyzed compared to the 2007 elementary school mathematics curriculum with a focus on changes in specified learning topics. First, the topics which are dealt with in the 2011 curriculum were critically discussed. Second, prominent features which can be found in learning topics in 2011 curriculum were found. The following three conclusions which can be obtained from above analyzed results were presented. First, system for curriculum development is necessary to supplement. The process of draft development for public hearing and final curriculum development is not exposed anywhere. It is necessary to clean up and disclose this process in order to study and develop next curriculum. Second, it is necessary to modify the way of stating in curriculum. it is necessary to specify and use the expressions to some extent the meaning of which are not sufficiently established and the meaning of which are ambiguous. Third, the achievement standards set by 2011 curriculum needs to be consistent. The principles for stating achievement standards are necessary. it is necessary to review the link between elementary and middle school curriculum is well-made.
