Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the status of a unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canine (as seen on the panoramic radiograph) and the orthodontic treatment duration. Methods: A total of 36 subjects were chosen (8 males and 28 females, $13.7{\pm}2.5$ years). All patients had undergone orthodontic traction of the impacted canine after a closed flap surgery. The position of impacted canine on the panoramic radiograph was traced and calculated with regard to the treatment duration. Results: The canine overlap over the lateral incisor (COGr) had significant statistical difference between the short-term and the long-term treatment duration groups (divided by average treatment time of 21 months) (p<0.05). Multiple regression indicated that the variables of significance (with treatment duration as the dependent variable) were the canine vertical height from the occlusal plane $(HCV,\;r^2=0.115;\;p<0.05)$ and the mandibular anterior width $(MnDW,\;r^2=0.142;\;p<0.05)$. The treatment duration, the canine angle to the incisor midline (CA), and HCV decreased from primary dentition (under 12 yrs) to permanent dentition (15 yrs). Howerer, these increased again at the adolescent ages (over 16 yrs). Conclusion: These findings suggested that orthodontic treatment of a palatally impacted canine would show good prognosis at an age of early permanent dentition with the canine showing smaller CA and HCV.

Supernumerary teeth are teeth which result from the continued budding of the enamel organ of the preceding tooth or from excessive proliferation of cells. They are most often found in the maxillary anterior region. And they can be responsible for a variey of irregularities in the primary and transitional dentition. There are two morphological types of supernumerary teeth, supplemental and rudimentary. Supplemental teeth have normal shape and size. In contrast, rudimental teeth have abnormal shape and smaller size. Supplemental supernumerary teeth are most common in permanent lateral incisor area. Its extraction must be decided more carefully with differential diagnosis between normal teeth, because it has normal shape and size. We reports 3 cases of the normal incisor shaped teeth in the maxillary anterior region. In all cases, we used the 3D Dental-CT as well as the conventional plain film such as periapical, occlusal, and panoramic radiograph. Consequently, 3B Dental-CT was valualble to figure out the exact position and morphology of supernumerary teeth, to do more conservative surgery and to reduce surgery stress and time.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of exposure to various children's drinks on the color stability of anterior primary teeth and different esthetic restorative materials clinically used in pediatric dentistry. Exfoliated maxillary primary central incisors that had been unaffected by caries were chosen as control group. Maxillary primary central incisor-shaped specimens made of strip crown and Nu-smile zirconia crowns were chosen as test groups. Polished strip resin crowns were additionally prepared to compare with unpolished strip resin crown. Each specimen and teeth were divided into 4 groups in which the test samples (n=5 each) were immersed in 4 different drinks (distilled water, cola, grape juice, jelly juice) for 6 days. In all 4 drink groups, all specimens generally showed increasing ${\Delta}E^*$ value (color difference) with time. Polished resin strip crown had higher ${\Delta}E^*$ value than the unpolished in cola, grape juice and jelly juice groups. ${\Delta}E^*$ value of zirconia crown in cola, grape juice and jelly juice groups were significantly different (p < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary control of children's drinks is required for preventing discoloration of restorative materials.

Maxillary canines are the most commonly impacted or ectopically erupted teeth. If we find the abnormality of maxillary canines early, we can manage it reasonably and systematically. If we cannot see the spontaneous normalization at the periodic recall, primary canine extraction will be the next treatment choice. However, if the primary canine is extracted too early, the extraction socket will be filled with hard bone and then the eruption pathway can be locked. So it is more beneficial to extract the primary canine at the period about 6 months before the normal canine eruption time. The next treatment plan can be surgical and orthodontic approaches before the root apical closure of the impacted canine. Sometimes, surgical extraction and further prosthetic procedure can be needed for a severely malposed impacted canine or badly resorpted incisor. This is the case of the idiopathic mesial movement of impacted maxillary canines.

The term 'triple tooth' is used to describe a rare dental abnormality in which three teeth appear to be joined. The literature contains many reports of joined primary teeth; most cases have involved, however, the joining of two teeth, and only rarely three teeth. Triple tooth has clinical problems such as dental caries, esthetic problems, malocclusions, and periodontal problems. Therefore, it may require multi-disciplinary approach. The present study describes rare case of triple tooth between maxillary primary central and lateral incisors and a supernumerary tooth. An one-year, eleven-month old girl was seen for evaluation of swelling in the labial gingiva above a right maxillary triple tooth. She experienced traumatic dental injury in that area three weeks ago. Intraoral examination revealed an abscess and fistula in the region of the triple tooth. A radiographic examination showed that right lateral incisor was missing. Endodontic treatment and composite resin restoration was performed on the triple tooth. After follow-ups of 7 months period, there were no marked complications.

Dentinogenesis imperfecta is an example of an inheritable dentinal defect originating during the histodifferentiation stage of tooth development, with involvement of the primary and permanent teeth. Shields, Bixler and El-Kafrawy proposed three types of Dentinogenesis imperfecta : Type I, II, III. Witkop reported a prevalence of 1 in 8000 with the trait, and no significant difference between male and female. Affected teeth have red-brown discoloration often with distinctive wearness of occlusal surface of posterior teeth and incisal surface of anterior teeth. Once enamel seperated from underlying defective dentin, the dentin demonstrates significantly acclerated attrision. Radiographically, the teeth have thin roots, bulbous crown, cervical constriction, and obliteration of the root canals and pulp chambers. In primary dentition periapical lesions or multiple root fractures are often observed. In successive generations the phenotypes of discoloration and wearness of teeth occurred, and one of the patient's subships, 10 year-old sister, showed general discoloration of her teeth and mild wearness. In this case, a 4 year-old male reported to the Yonsei University Pedodontics clinic, with a chief complaint of discolored teeth. The teeth showed generally yellowish-brown discoloration and moderate wearness. In radiographic features, obliteration of pulp, bulbous crown, and short roots were observed. It was diagnosed as Dentinogenesis imperfecta. The posterior teeth were restored with Stainless Steel Crown, and defective incisors including left upper primary central incisor which was extracted due to a root fracture with Open-faced Stainless Steel crown.

Children usually have varying degree of caries in primary anterior teeth, and treatment planning for each case prescribed by each dentist can also be varied. This survey was conducted to compare the preferred treatment method and restorative materials between general dentists and pediatric dentists in regard to the treatment of primary incisors. The questionnaires, composed of 18 questions were sent to 45 general dentists and 50 pediatric dentists. Among which 30 and 31 questionnaires were retrieved respectively. The collected data were analyzed by rate and the results were as follows: 1. For the teeth with initial caries without cavitation, general dentists showed the tendency to prefer restorative treatment(30%) or observation without any treatment(42%), whereas pediatric dentists prefer preventive treatment(76%). 2. The primary factor in choosing restorative materials by both groups was its manipulativeness. 3. For anterior esthetic restoration, general dentists seldom use the full-coverage restoration(13%) but resin restoration(75%), whereas pediatric dentists frequently used full-coverage crow(64%). 4. In the treatment of dentinal caries, pediatric dentist did not perform the treatment lesser than 2.0 years before the exfoliation (compared to 1.2 years of general dentist). 5. In the treatment of 1 year children, both pediatric and general dentists tend to select preventive procedure as first choice of treatment(84%, 52%). When treating primary incisor caries, it is shown that pediatric dentists are more interested in restorative/preventive treatment than general dentists are.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the dental caries prevalence and occlusion pattern of children with deciduous dentition in Chonnam seashore area. Two thousand two hundred seventy two kindergarten children ranged 3 to 5 years of age were examined. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The rate of children with caries experience(dmf rate) in deciduous teeth was 66.8% at 3 years of age, 77.7% at 4 years of age, and 83.5% at 5 years of age and showed no significant gender differences(p>0.05). 2. The mean number of decayed, missing, filled deciduous teeth(dmft index) was 3.62 at 3 years of age, 4.73 at 4 years of age, and 5.96 at 5 years of age and showed no significant gender differences(p>0.05). 3. Most of the caries-prevailed tooth was mandibular 2nd primary molar and showed 39.48% at 3 years of age, 49.73% at 4 years of age, and 63.85% at 5 years of age. 4. The caries-experienced teeth in order were as follows : mandibular 2nd primary molar with 52.34%, mandibular 1st primary molar with 45.61%, maxillary 2nd primary molar with 38.81%, and maxillary primary central incisor with 38.86%, respectively. 5. In sagittal primary molar relationship, Class 1 occlusion pattern was 53.26%, Class 2 pattern was 1.41% and Class 3 pattern was 30.02%, respectively. Right Class 2 and Left Class 3 pattern was not observed.

Tooth transposition is the phenomenon in which two teeth in the dental arch are exchanged. The tooth most frequently involved in transposition is the permanent maxillary canine, especially with the first premolar. The etiology of transposition is still an enigma. Interchange of tooth germs, migration during eruption, genetic factor, local pathologic factors may be suggested as possible etiologic factors. There are three main options for treatment, which are the extraction of one of the transposed teeth, the alignment in the transposed position, the orthodontic movement of the teeth to their correct positions. If complete transposition occurred especially in mandible, alignment of teeth in the transposed position followed by occlusal reduction and esthetic restoration is usually recommended. The presented two-case report will describe the maxillary canine to the first premolar and to lateral incisor transposition with associated peg lateralis and retained primary canines. Although alignment the transposed teeth in original position is ideal treatment, it companies many complication as root resorption, alveolar bone destruction, gingival deheisence, etc. Therefore the treatment procedures in these case was relative cost-benefit effective method to both clinician and patients.

Odontomas, hamartomas of odontogenic origin, are composed of all the structures that make up teeth. The WHO distinguishes odontoma into two types. The complex odontoma is defined as "a malformation in which all the dental tissues are represented, individual tissues being mainly well-formed but occurring in a more or less disorderly pattern." The compound odontoma is defined as "a malformation in which all the dental tissues are represented in a more orderly pattern than in the complex odontoma, so that the lesion consists of many toothlike structures. Most of these structures do not resemble morphologically the teeth of normal dentition, but in each one enamel, dentine, cementum, and pulp are arranged as in the normal tooth." Almost all odontomas are located intraosseously, but they have occasionally been reported in extrabony location. Peripheral or soft tissue odontomas, those arising outside of the alveolar bone, are very rare. Peripheral or soft tissue odontoma are defined as tumors that demonstrate the histologic characteristics of their intraosseous counterparts but occur solely in the soft tissue covering the tooth-bearing portion of the mandible and maxilla. When they mature, they appear as a radiopaque mass without the peripheral halo. The final diagnosis should be confirmed by biopsy. The origin of peripheral odontoma is probably related to remnants of the dental lamina in the gingiva. The treatment of choice is complete surgical excision, similarly to intraosseous odontoma and it does not tend to recur. This report presents a case of 5-year-old boy with swelling on labial gingiva of primary central incisor. And it was diagnosed as peripheral odontoma by excisional biopsy.
