A sintered body of $TiB_2$-reinforced iron matrix composite ($Fe-TiB_2$) is fabricated by pressureless-sintering of a mixture of titanium hydride ($TiH_2$) and iron boride (FeB) powders. The powder mixture is prepared in a planetary ball-mill at 700 rpm for 3 h and then pressurelessly sintered at 1300, 1350 and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 0-2 h. The optimal sintering temperature for high densities (above 95% relative density) is between 1350 and $1400^{\circ}C$, where the holding time can be varied from 0.25 to 2 h. A maximum relative density of 96.0% is obtained from the ($FeB+TiH_2$) powder compacts sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Sintered compacts have two main phases of Fe and $TiB_2$ along with traces of TiB, which seems to be formed through the reaction of TiB2 formed at lower temperatures during the heating stage with the excess Ti that is intentionally added to complete the reaction for $TiB_2$ formation. Nearly fully densified sintered compacts show a homogeneous microstructure composed of fine $TiB_2$ particulates with submicron sizes and an Fe-matrix. A maximum hardness of 71.2 HRC is obtained from the specimen sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 0.5 h, which is nearly equivalent to the HRC of conventional WC-Co hardmetals containing 20 wt% Co.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) has excellent electrical insulation property, high thermal conductivity, and a low thermal expansion coefficient; therefore, it is widely used as a heat sink, heat-conductive filler, and heat dissipation substrate. However, it is well known that the AlN-based materials have disadvantages such as low sinterability and poor mechanical properties. In this study, the effects of addition of various amounts (1-6 wt.%) of sintering additives $Y_2O_3$ and $Sm_2O_3$ on the thermal and mechanical properties of AlN samples pressureless sintered at $1850^{\circ}C$ in an $N_2$ atmosphere for a holding time of 2 h are examined. All AlN samples exhibit relative densities of more than 97%. It showed that the higher thermal conductivity as the $Y_2O_3$ content increased than the $Sm_2O_3$ additive, whereas all AlN samples exhibited higher mechanical properties as $Sm_2O_3$ content increased. The formation of secondary phases by reaction of $Y_2O_3$, $Sm_2O_3$ with oxygen from AlN lattice influenced the thermal and mechanical properties of AlN samples due to the reaction of the oxygen contents in AlN lattice.

Cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composites with 5 to 25wt% ZrO$_2$ were fabricated by prssureless sintering, and their densification behavior, fracture strength, fracture toughness, microstructure and thermal expansion behavior were studied. The ZrO$_2$ addition into cordierite matrix affects the densification behavior and mechanical properties of the composites. By dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$, densified cordierite/ZrO$_2$ composite with a relative density of 98.5% was obtained at optimum sintering condition of 144$0^{\circ}C$/2H. Both fracture strength and toughness were increased from 140 to 290MPa and from 1.6 to 3.5 MPam$\frac{1}{2}$, respectively, by dispersing 25wt% ZrO$_2$ into the cordierite matrix. ZrO$_2$ particles were homogenously dispersed into cordierite matrix, which intragranular particles were fine(<100nm) and intergranular particles were coarse. The toughening mechanisms in the present composites were mainly attributed to martensitic transformation toughening. Then, the addition of ZrO$_2$ is likely to have little deleterious effect upon thermal expansion coefficient of cordierite.
Gadolinium tetraboride ($GdB_4$) was synthesized by reduction of $Gd_2O_3$ using boron carbide in presence of carbon. Effect of temperature on product quality was investigated. Pure $GdB_4$ powder was obtained in vacuum at $1500^{\circ}C$. Pressureless sintering experiments revealed that sintering takes place only above $1600^{\circ}C$. A maximum density of 77.1% of the theoretical value was obtained at $1800^{\circ}C$ by pressureless sintering. Hot pressing resulted in 95.5% of theoretical density at the lower temperature of $1700^{\circ}C$ under 35 MPa pressure. Hardness and fracture toughness of dense $GdB_4$ were measured and found to be 21.4 GPa and $2.3MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively. After exposure to air at $900^{\circ}C$, the formation of a porous and non-protective oxide layer was observed.
Effective control of the heat generated from electronics and semiconductor devices requires a high thermal conductivity and a low thermal expansion coefficient appropriate for devices or modules. A method of reducing the thermal expansion coefficient of Cu has been suggested wherein a ceramic filler having a low thermal expansion coefficient is applied to Cu, which has high thermal conductivity. In this study, using pressureless sintering rather than costly pressure sintering, a polymer solution synthesis method was used to make nano-sized Cu powder for application to Cu matrix with an AlN filler. Due to the low sinterability, the sintered Cu prepared from commercial Cu powder included large pores inside the sintered bodies. A sintered Cu body with Zn, as a liquid phase sintering agent, was prepared by the polymer solution synthesis method for exclusion of pores, which affect thermal conductivity and thermal expansion. The pressureless sintered Cu bodies including Zn showed higher thermal conductivity (180 W/m·K) and lower thermal expansion coefficient (15.8×10-6/℃) than did the monolithic synthesized Cu sintered body.
AlON was fabricated by the pressureless reaction sintering of $Al_2O_3$-AlN powder mixtures. The ratio of AlN to $Al_2O_3$ as well as various sintering aids were the main variables for this study. The optimum ratio of AlN in the $Al_2O_3$-AlN mixture was approximately 35.0 mol%. For the sintering aids, only when a small amount of MgO was added together with $Y_2O_3$ and BN, AlON specimens could be sintered to a full density with negligible pores and high transparency. Other combinations of $Y_2O_3$, BN, CaO and MgO resulted in enough pores in the sintered specimens to have in-line transmittance only between 0% and 30%. The in-line transmittance reached over 80% after sintering at $1975^{\circ}C$ for 10 h for the specimen containing 0.15 wt% MgO, 0.08 wt% $Y_2O_3$ and 0.02 wt% BN.
Densification behavior and grain growth of zirconia powder compacts are investigated under high temperature. Experimental data are obtained for zirconia powder under pressureless sintering, sinter forging and hot isostatic pressing. The constitutive equations by Kwon et al. are used for diffusional creep and grain growth. The constitutive equations by McMeeking and co-workers are also included to study the effect of power-law creep. These constitutive equations are implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS) to investigate the friction effect during sinter forging and the canning effect during hot isostatic pressing. The agreements between experimental data and finite element results are very good in pressureless sintering and hot isostatic pressing, but not as good in sinter forging.
The nonuniform shrinkage has been investigaed in pressureless sintering of $\alpha$-SiC, where born carbide and phenolic resin as a carbon source are used as densification aids. Compacted specimens, prepared from the granulated powder, were sintered at 215$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min in Ar atmosphere. Using the fresh and unseasoned graphite crucible, the upwarped specimens were obtained, while specimens were uniformly shrunk in the seasoned crucible. This effect is mainly due to the nonuniform distributjion of boron carbide during heatig, which originates in the reaction of boron carbide with CO gas, providing from the result of SiO2 reduction with carbon during heating.
Si3N4-TiN electro-conductive ceramic composites with 7wt% Al2O3+3wt% Y2O3 or 5wt% MgO as sintering aids were fabricated by pressureless sintering at 1,80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The 3pt. flexural strength, KIC and Vickers hardness were measrued in order to investigate the effects of TiN on the mechanical properties. Also oxidation behavior was observed by measuring the weight gain after exposure to air at 1,10$0^{\circ}C$ for 100h. the reaction products between Si3N4 and TiN was not detected by XRD and EDS. Mechanical properties of the composites were not influenced by the addition of TiN less than 30vol%, but oxidation resistance of the composites was rapidly decreased with the amount of added TiN.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) has excellent thermal conductivity, whereas it has some disadvantage such as low sinterability. In this study, the effects of sintering additive content and sintering condition on thermal conductivity of pressureless sintered AlN ceramics were examined on the variables of 1~3 wt% sintering additive ($Y_2O_3$) content at $1900^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere with holding time of 2~10 h. All AlN specimens showed higher thermal conductivity as the $Y_2O_3$ content and holding time increase. The formation of secondary phases (yttrium aluminates) by reaction of $Y_2O_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ from AlN surface promoted the thermal conductivity of AlN specimens, because the secondary phases could reduce the oxygen contents in AlN lattice. Also, thermal conductivity was increased by long sintering time because of the uniform distribution and the elimination of the secondary phases at the grain boundary by the evaporation effect during long holding time. A carbothermal reduction reaction was also affected on the thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of AlN specimens sintered at $1900^{\circ}C$ for 10 h showed 130~200W/mK according to the content of sintering additive.
