Direct numerical simulation has been used to study turbulent boundary layers with convex curvature. A direct numerical simulation program has been developed to solve incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in generalized coordinates with the finite volume method. We considered two boundary layer thicknesses. When the curvature effect is small, mean velocity statistics show little difference with those of a plane channel flow. Turbulent intensity decreases as curvature increases. Contours suggest that streamwise vorticities are strong where large pressure fluctuations exist.
This paper describes a simple and practical approach through the application of Linear Stochastic Estimation (LSE) to reconstruct wind-induced pressure time series from the covariance matrix for structural load analyses on a low building roof. The main application of this work would be the reduction of the data storage requirements for the NIST aerodynamic database. The approach is based on the assumption that a random pressure field can be estimated as a linear combination of some other known pressure time series by truncating nonlinear terms of a Taylor series expansion. Covariances between pressure time series to be simulated and reference time series are used to calculate the estimation coefficients. The performance using different LSE schemes with selected reference time series is demonstrated by the reconstruction of structural load time series in a corner bay for three typical wind directions. It is shown that LSE can simulate structural load time series accurately, given a handful of reference pressure taps (or even a single tap). The performance of LSE depends on the choice of the reference time series, which should be determined by considering the balance between the accuracy, data-storage requirements and the complexity of the approach. The approach should only be used for the determination of structural loads, since individual reconstructed pressure time series (for local load analyses) will have larger errors associated with them.

Various jet engines (Turbine engine family and RAM Jet engine) have been developed for high speed aircrafts. but their application to hypersonic flight is restricted by principle problems such as increase of total pressure loss and thermal stress. Therefore, the development of next generation propulsion system for hypersonic aircraft is a very important subject in the aerospace engineering field, SCRAM Jet engine based on a key technology, Supersonic Combustion. is supposed as the best choice for the hypersonic flight. Since Supersonic Combustion requires both rapid ignition and stable flame holding within supersonic air stream, much attention have to be given on the mixing state between air stream and fuel flow. However. the wider diffusion of fuel is expected with less total pressure loss in the supersonic air stream. So. in this study the direction of fuel injection is inclined 30 degree to downstream and the total pressure of jet is controlled for lower penetration height than thickness of boundary layer. Under these flow configuration both streams, fuel and supersonic air stream, would not mix enough. To spread fuel wider into supersonic air an aerodynamic force, baroclinic torque, is adopted. Baroclinic torque is generated by a spatial misalignment between pressure gradient (shock wave plane) and density gradient (mixing layer). A wedge is installed in downstream of injector orifice to induce an oblique shock. The schlieren optical visualization from side transparent wall and the total pressure measurement at exit cross section of combustor estimate how mixing is enhanced by the incidence of shock wave into supersonic boundary layer composed by fuel and air. In this study non-combustionable helium gas is injected with total pressure 0.66㎫ instead of flammable fuel to clarify mixing process. Mach number 1.8. total pressure O.5㎫, total temperature 288K are set up for supersonic air stream.
A finite element scheme using the concept of PISO method has been developed to solve the Navier-Stokes viscous flows in all speed range. This scheme includes development of new pressure equation that retains both the hyperbolic term related with the density variation and the elliptic term reflecting the incompressibility constraint. The present method is applied to the incompressible two-dimensional driven cavity flow problems(Re=100, 400 and 1,000). For compressible flows, the Carter plate problem(M=3 and Re=1,000) is computed. Finally, we have simulated the shock-boundary layer interaction(M=2 and Re=2.96×10/sup 5/), a more difficult problem, and compared its results with the experiment to demonstrate the shock capturing capability of the present solution algorithm.
A novel probabilistic approach is presented for estimating the equivalent static wind loads that produce a static response of the structure, which is "equivalent" in a probabilistic sense, to the extreme dynamic responses due to the unsteady pressure random field induced by the wind. This approach has especially been developed for complex structures (such as stadium roofs) for which the unsteady pressure field is measured in a boundary layer wind tunnel with a turbulent incident flow. The proposed method deals with the non-Gaussian nature of the unsteady pressure random field and presents a model that yields a good representation of both the quasi-static part and the dynamical part of the structural responses. The proposed approach is experimentally validated with a relatively simple application and is then applied to a stadium roof structure for which experimental measurements of unsteady pressures have been performed in boundary layer wind tunnel.
Hydraulic vane pumps are widely used in various hydraulic systems because of its compactness and light weight. It is well known that the vanes and cam ring are separated by very thin liquid films which result in the EHL state. Contrary to the case of cylindrical roller bearings, the inlet and side boundary pressures are much higher than the atmospheric pressure. In this paper, a numerical solution of the EHL of finite line contacts between the cam ring and vane tip with profiled ends is presented. Using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method, converged solutions are obtained for moderate load and material parameters. The EHL pressure distribution and film shape are considerably affected by pump delivery pressure and the side boundary condition applied. Both the maximum pressure and the minimum film thickness always occurred near the edge regions. The present results can be used in the design of optimum vane profile in hydraulic vane pump.

In this study, uniform pressure distribution with small hole on the surface of symmetric object were given to reduce the viscous frictional force. The results were as follows : 1. The velocity on upper stream were accelerated by uniform pressure distribution on symmetric objects for reducing the viscous frictional resistances. 2. The effects of the distributed small holes were reduced the viscous frictional resistances in down stream region more than upper stream due to the increasing pressure in reverse flow region. 3. The viscous skin friction on surface of symmetric objects with and without distributed small holes are effect in region of upper stream and much decreased in down stream region due to increasing of boundary layer thickness.

The Hull Mounted Sonar Dome housing the sonar sensor array is a ship's structure protruded from ship bottom, which is under turbulent flow. The flow of sonar surface is highly disturbed and turbulent. In this case the wall pressure fluctuations within the turbulent boundary layer are one of the most important flow induced self noise sources of the SONAR system. We investigate the characteristics of the wall pressure fluctuations of the hull mounted sonar dome through the model test in the cavitation tunnel. This paper contains the wall pressure fluctuation spectra at various free stream velocities.
A boundary condition reflecting automatically, regardless of the direction of the gas flow, the pressure drop due to the entrance and exit effect occurred at a connection of two elements with different cross-sections in calculating the pressure profile of a vacuum network composed of many chambers and pipes which have different shape and vacuum properties was developed. The method of correcting the pressure drop in an element of varying cross-section like a cone was also introduced to keep the system free from directionality. The developed boundary conditions are applied as an example to a linear composed vacuum system to show how to make a set of simultaneous equations based on the particle balance equation and how to obtain its solution.

To investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of the on a road vehicle, experimenrs were performed at an Atmospheric Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel. The scaled model of an automobile with 1 : 3 scaling ratio was used. The Reynolds number based on the free stream velocity and model length was $7.93{\times}10^5$. The influence of crosswind to the stability of automobile was investigated by the pressure distribution measurements and flow visualization studies. with the variation of the angle of attack, the change in pressure coefficient depends highly on the flow separation regimes. The experimental and numerical results are compared and found to be in good agreements.
