Background: Most of the studies conducted have investigated the beneficial effects of ischemic preconditioning on normothermic myocardial ischemia. However, the effect of preconditioning could be attenuated through the use of multidose cold cardioplegia as practiced in contemporary clinical heart surgical procedures. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether preconditioning improves postischemic cardiac function in a model of $25^{\circ}C$ moderate hypothermic ischemic heart induced by cold cardioplegia in isolated rat hearts. Material and Method: The isolated Sprague-Dawley rat hearts were randomly assigned to four groups All hearts were perfused at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes with Krebs-Henseleit solution before the baseline hemodynamic data were obtained, Group 1 consisted of preconditioned hearts that received 3 minutes of global ischemic preconditioning at 37$^{\circ}C$, followed by 5 minutes of reperfusion before 120 minutes of cardioplegic arrest (n=6). Cold (4$^{\circ}C$) St. Thomas Hospital cardioplegia solution was infused to induce cardioplegic arrest. Maintaining the heart at $25^{\circ}C$, infusion of the cardioplegia solution was repeated every 20 minutes throughout the 120 minutes of ischemic period. Group 2 consisted of control hearts that underwent no manipulations between the periods of equilibrium and 120 minutes of cardioplegic arrest (n=6). After 2 hours of cardioplegic arrest, Krebs solution was infused and hemodynamic data were obtained for 30 minuts (group 1, 2: cold cardioplegia group). Group 3 received two episodes of ischemic preconditioning before 30 min of 37$^{\circ}C$ normothermic ischemia and 30 minutes of reperfusion (n=6) Group 4 soloed as ischemic controls for group 3 (group 3, 4: warm ischemia group). Result: Preconditioning did not influence parameters such as left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP), left ventricular end-diastolic pressure (LVEDP), rate-pressure product (RPP) and left ventricular dp/dt (LV dp/dt) in the cold cardioplegia group. (p=NS) However, preconditioning before warm ischemia attenuated the ischemia induced cardiac dysfunction, Improving the LVSP, LVEDP, RPP, and LV dp/dt. Less leakage of CPK and LDH were observed in the ischemic preconditioning group compared to the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Ischemic preconditioning improved postischemic cardiac function after warm ischemia, but did not protect cold cardioplegic hearts.
Thoracoscopic bullectomy (VATS-B) is now the preferred treatment for spontaneous pneumothorax despite of higher recurrence rate than open thoracotomy. Several methods have been used to prevent this problem. The effectiveness of staple line reinforcement (SLR) in VATA-B using endostaplers was assessed by clinical and experimental study. Meterial and Method: In experimental study, canine lungs were harvested immediately (group I N=5) and 48 hours (group II N=5) after stapling. The pressures at which initial air leaks occurred were measured. In clinical study from February 1997 to March 1999, 106 procedures in 104 patients undergoing VATS-B for spontaneous pneumothorax were classified into two groups according to the presence of SLR and were compared. Result: The average pressure of the initial air leakage was significantly higher in SLR than that of staples alone (18$\pm$1.6 vs 48$\pm$3 mm Hg in group I; 23.8$\pm$1.9 vs 54$\pm$4.6 mm Hg in group II, p<0.001). In the clinical data, there were significant differences seen in the duration of drainage, the total length of endostaplers used, and the duration of the postoperative hospital stay between patients with staple alone and patients with SLR (4.4$\pm$1.4 vs 3.1$\pm$1.1 days in duration of drainage, 92.3$\pm$28.1 vs 71.1$\pm$30.6 mm in total length of endostaplers used, 5.9$\pm$1.9 vs 4.6$\pm$1.7 days in postoperative hospital stays, p<0.001). Conclusion: SLR was effective for preventing prolonged air leakage and responsible for shorter hospital stays after VATS-B for the treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax.
Histamine, 0.5 mg as histamine base in 4 ml of normal saline solution, was injected into rabbits anesthetized with nembutal and the mean blood pressure was kept in the range of $52{\sim}80\;mmHg$ for over one hour by supplemental additions. Following the injection of the test substances, 300 mg of urea and 200 mg of antipyrine intravenously, serial blood samples were obtained from the femoral artery and the internal jugular vein at $0.5{\sim}3$ minutes interval. The decreasing patterns in the concentrations of arterial and venous blood plasma samples were compared with each other. The ratio of the concentration of brain tissue to that of the final arterial plasma was also studied. By these measures the degrees of penetration of the test substances in the brain in the control and in the histamine treated rabbits were observed. The concentrations of antipyrine and urea in the arterial blood plasma were decreasing exponentially with respect to the time elapsed. The venous concentrations were anticipated to increase initially and to cross the arterial concentration curve in the point of equlibrium between the plasma and the tissue. On the contrary to the expectation venous concentration also revealed the decreasing tendency similar to that of arterial plasma. The similarity between these two curves, arterial and venous, would be atributable to the fact that the cerebral blood flow rate was large enough and the rising phase in the venous concentration curve was instantly over before serial blood samples were taken. Inspite of some similarity in the decreasing tedency in both concentration curves there were appreciable discrepancies between the arterial and venous plasma which would reflect the situation far from the equlibria among several compartments in the brain. Changes in plasma potassium levels caused by the injection of histamine or bleeding were observed, too. Using 8 rabbits as the control and 12 rabbits for the histamine treated group following results were obtained: 1. Both of the concentration curves, arterial and venous, declined rapidly at_first and slowly later on and approached same equilibrium concentration with the passage of time after a single injection. The time at which attained the same concentration was $2.0{\pm}0.54\;min.$ in the control and $4.3{\pm}1.92\;min.$ in the histamine treated group with respect to antipyrine. On the other hand in the case of urea they were $2.4{\pm}0.59\;min.$ in the control and $4.4{\pm}1.31\;min.$ in the histamine group, respectively. In the histamine treated group enlarged spaces for distribution of test substances were postulated. 2. The concentration of antipyrine in the brain tissue water revealed no significant differences between the control and experimental groups, showing $212{\pm}40.2\;mg/l$ in the control and $206{\pm}64.1\;mg/l$ in the histamine treated group. On the other hand urea revealed higher value in the histamine treated group than in the control, showing an enhanced penetration of urea into the tissue after injection of histamine. Urea concentration in the brain water was $32.3{\pm}3.36\;mg%$ in the control and $39.2{\pm}4.25\;mg%$ in the histamine treated group. 3. The distribution ratio of antipyrine in the brain tissue was very close to unity in the histamine treated animals as well as in the control. 4. The average of the distribution ratio of urea in the control animals was 0.77 and it showed the presence of blood-brain barrier with regard to urea. However in the histamine treated animals the distribution ratios climbed up to 0.86 and they were closer to unity than in the control animals. Out of 12 cases 5 were greater than 0.9 and 8 exceeded 0.85. It appeared that histamine enhanced the penetration of urea through the barrier. 5. Histamine injection and or hemorrhage caused an elevation of the concentration of potassium in plasma. In the event that histamine and hemorrhage were applied together the elevation of potassium exceed the elevation seen at the histamine alone. There was no evidence that the leakage of potassium from the brain tissue was dominant in comparison with the general leakage from the whole body.
The compressed packer device is designed to improve the underground contamination prevention facilities of ground water wells. As for the device, the installation is simple because of the safety lock device and the compression of the casing are simple the installation is simple. There is no leakage of ground water because the pressure resistance with $4.5\;kg/cm^2$ makes it equipped with the watertightness The single casing is installed and the reaming for grouting is possible with 300 mm excavation so that installation cost can be saved. Silicon rubber is used for the compressed packer so that the extension rate is 590%. In terms of environmental pollution, it is an environmental friendly product which does not contain harmful ingredients such as Pb, Cd, and phenol. below the standard or undetectable level Furthermore, the installation costs are 35 to 62% or lower than the conventional grouting construction method and are 87% or lower than the expansion packer construction method, the new environmental technology No.47 Also, the device is designed to meet the relevant regulations such as Rules on Preserving the Ground Water Quality, The Standard on Jeju Island Ground Water Development and Facility Installation and Management, and The Plan and Guideline on Operating and Managing the Small-Scale Tap Water Facilities of Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
In gas industries, the potential risks of serious accidents have been increased due to high technology application and process complexities. Especially, in case of gas-related accidents, the extent of demage is out of control since gas plants handle and produce combustible, flammable, explosive and toxic materials in large amounts. The characteristics of this kind of disaster is that accident frequency is low, while the impact of damage is high, extending to the neighboring residents, environment and related industries as well as employees involved. The hydrogen gases treated important things and it used the basic material of chemical plants and industries. Since 2000, this gas stood in the spotlight the substitution energy for reduction of the global warming in particular however it need to compress high pressure(more than 150 bar.g) and store by using the special cylinders due to their low molecular weight. And this gas led to many times the fire and explosion due to leak of it. To reduce these kinds of risks and accidents, it is necessary to improve the new safety management system through a risk management after technically evaluating potential hazards in this process. This study is to carry out the quantitative risk assesment for hydrogen filling plant which are very dangerous(fire and explosive) and using a basic materials of general industries. As a results of this risk assessment, identified the elements important for safety(EIS) and suggested the practical management tools and verified the reliability of this risk assessment model through case study of accident.
When the coatings of buried steel pipelines are damaged, corrosion could be occurred on the surface of the damaged areas. Moreover the pinhole occurred by corrosion of pipelines may cause accidents due to gas leakage. To prevent these accidents, foreign countries including UK and USA have carried out coating defect detection on the buried gas pipelines by using a DCVG or a ACVG and have conducted direct assessment of pipelines through digging the ground, and if necessary, have repaired the pipelines. That is called ECDA i.e External Corrosion Direct Assessment which is regulated by NACE standards(SP 0502) and etc. In Korea, the ECDA provisions were included in KGS FS551 in 2014 when the regulations of Safety Validation in Detail for the medium-pressure piping were introduced. We have developed the equipment which can be used to detect external corrosion of the buried gas pipelines. We have also constructed pipeline test bed for empirical test of the developed equipment. In addition, we have carried out the verification experiments of the developed equipment on the test bed to demonstrate the performance of the equipment. The experiments were conducted by comparison tests of the developed equipment and other equipments which have been introduced and used in Korea. As the result, we have found the developed equipment is easier to use and has far superior performance compared to other equipment being used in Korea.
Buried pipe system is subject to leak or rupture due to internal and external defects with age. Especially, if the pipeline is designed for pressurized gas, the leak can wreak a devastating on its surrounding area. The current method of setting up underground gas pipeline is based on OGP criteria of applying one tenth of the inner pipe pressure. The criteria is applied irrespective of their burial depth or pipe's properties. At times, even the whole safety measures are totally ignored. Considering the magnitude of possible damage from a gas leakage, a precise analytical tool for the risk assessment is urgently needed. The study was conducted to assess possible scenarios of gas accidents and to develop a computer model to minimize the damage. The data from ETA was analyzed intensively, and the model was developed. The model is capable of predicting jet fire influence area with comprehensive input parameters, such as burial depth. The model was calibrated and verified by the historic accident data from Edison Township, New Jersey, the United States. The statistical model was also developed to compare the results of the model in this study and the existing OGP model. They were in good agreement with respect to damage predictions, such as radiation heat coming from 10 meters away from the heat source of gas flame.

The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of urinary incontinence of community residing climacteric women, and to identify the relationship between urinary incontinence and quality of life. The subjects of this study were 156 women(45 to 59 years old). Data was collected from Sep. 1 to Dec. 1 2002 by an interview or self-reporting by a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was composed of items of general characteristics, urinary characteristics, and conditions of urinary incontinence, using the modified Henderickson's stress incontinence scale(1981), and the quality of life scale developed by RO, You Ja(1988). The data was analyzed by the SPSS/WIN program using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficients, t-test and AVOVA. The results of the study were as follows : 1. The prevalence of urinary incontinence was 76.3%. Of the incontinent women, 42.0% had experienced urinary incontinence for a period of one to three years. Frequency of urinary incontinence was once or twice per day for 42.9% of the urinary incontinent women. Most of the participation with urinary incontinence(91.6%) had mild leakage of urine. In the whole urinary incontinent women, 70.6% had never treated or managed their urinary incontinence. Most of the subjects(79.8%) were mildly incontinent, and the prevalence of moderate and severe urinary incontinence was 20.2%. The mean scores among the items of urinary incontinence, in descending order, were increase of abdominal pressure($1.45{\pm}1.05$), coughing($1.16{\pm}0.93$), and sneezing($1.03{\pm}0.92$). 2. The average score in the level in the quality of life variables was 3.12. The urinary incontinence and quality of life were correlated negatively(r=-0.103, p<0.001). 3. There were statistically significant differences in the score of climacteric woman's self reported quality of life according to : amount of urinary incontinence(F=12.68, P=0.001), duration of urinary incontinence(F=6.97, P=0.009), number of urinary incontinence(F=4.77, P=0.03), existence of urinary incontinence(t=148, P=0.05). In conclusion, this study was a preliminary study to provide nursing practice guidelines for climacteric woman with urinary incontinence. Nurses working with climacteric woman should develop and provide adequate care for the incontinent climacteric subjects. In future research, it is recommended to identify comprehensive factors related to urinary incontinence, including the effective management of urinary incontinence.
AlN thin films were fabricated by reactive sputtering for the application of MIS devices with Al/AlN/Si structure. It has investigated the surface morphology change, I-V characteristics, C-V characteristics, and chemical composition of AlN films with the intriducing time of hydrogen on the fixed deposition condition(RF power: 150W, sputtering pressure: 5mTorr, flow rate ratio of $Ar/N_2=1$, hydrogen concentration: 5%). By addition of the hydrogen the deposition rate decreased drastically whereas the surface morphology changed little. It has been found from the analysis of I-V and C-V characteristics curves that the films deposited with hydrogen addition in initial stage had lower leakage current density, lower flat band voltage and hystersis profile when compared with those with hydrogen addition in last stage. The oxygen concentration in AlN films decreased with addition of hydrogen gas, which suggesting a profitable role in the insulation and C-V characteristics of AlN films.

Anchovy, EngrauEis japonica scoop nets are used in the coastal of Southern and Cheju of Korea. Especially in the Cheju, the fishing gear of scoop nets consists of upper boom, lower boom, pressing stick and bag net. They are operated by fishing boats of 6 to 10 ton class and 8 persons on board. The booms are controlled by side drum, and the net and pressing stick are hauled by only human power in operating. Therefore this fishery needs to large labor and heavy human power and has much risk. Three kinds of hydraulic winding device which controls two booms was designed and manufactured to reduce heavy labor force of scoop nets, and trial in the sea was carried out to test their performances using the commercial fishing boats of 6 ton class. The proper capacity of hydraulic pump and motor were determined by model test of boom 1/5 scale. The results obtained are as follows, 1. Tension of boom which is being drawn was the strongest and 187.5kgf when the boom's end is in the depth of 4m under the water. 2. The hydraulic motor of the fittest kind of winder has the least leakage per time than the other kinds. 3. In the best type of several winder devices, when the pressure difference was fixed $130kg/^2$ for the safe fishery, the winding velocity of boom line was 2m/sec, is faster 0.48/sec than traditional fishing method and this winder can catch the anchovy of 1.6 tonnage. 4. As a result, the crew were decreased from 8 to 6 and the problem of heavy human power and risk on fishing operation were solved by using the this winder.
