  • An intake of Aircraft becomes S-shaped geometry due to spatial limitation or procuring survivability. But curvature of the S-shaped geometry makes secondary flow or flow separation which is the cause of non-uniform pressure distribution. In this study, boundary layer suction is applied to RAE M 2129 S-Duct by attaching sub duct. Design variable is suction location and angle. A mass flow rate drawn out by suction at the sub duct outlet is constant over every model. A grid dependency test was conducted to verify validity of computation. The comparison among the CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamics), ARA experimental result, and ARA computation result of non-dimensional pressure distribution on the Port side and Starboard Side confirmed the validity of CFD. In this study, Distortion Coefficient was used for evaluating aerodynamic performance of S-Duct. The analysis, which was about flow separation, vortex, mass flow rate distribution, and pressure distribution were also investigated. Maximum 26.14% reduction in Distortion Coefficient was verified.

  • In late 1960's, engineers of the engine manufacturer experienced that the distortion of inlet flow of turbofan and turbojet engine could cause the surge in compressor and affect overall engine operational performance, which result in the deterioration of stability of the engine. In this study, block type of inlet distortion simulating device has been developed in order to investigate the effect of inlet distortion on the deterioration of overall engine operational performance. The inlet distortion simulating device was installed in front of engine inlet in order to simulate distortion of inlet flow. The degree of inlet distortion was measured by rakes installed upstream the inlet distortion simulating device and between the engine inlet and inlet distortion simulating device. Before applying the inlet distortion simulating device to real engine, preliminary tests were performed with a simulated engine in order to verify the degree of inlet distortion by the device. Preliminary inlet distortion tests were performed in Altitude Engine Test Facility(AETF) of Korea Aerospace Research Institute(KARI) and results showed that the inlet distortion simulating device could be used in simulating various inlet distortion cases.

  • Finite element analysis of cylinder heat/block compound under assembly, thermal and firing condition were performed. FE model including two cylinders with gasket, head bolts, liners and valve seats was used. FE modeling method and boundary conditions were introduced. Stress distribution and deformation of cylinder head and block under each loading condition were presented. Gasket pressure distribution and bore distortion level were predicted. Measured data of bore distortion was compared with the analysis results. The analysis result showed similar trends with the experimental data. High cycle fatigue analysis on the basis of this result has been performed in order to find the critical areas of the engine assembly.

  • In this numerical analysis, the distortion of flow measurement by inlet velocity profile of orifice flowmeter was investigated. To validate the numerical method, the convergence was monitored and the grid dependency was also checked. realizable k-e model was selected and y+ was about 50 in this calculation. the results shows that the pressure at the pressure tab near pipe wall was changed by inclined inlet velocity profile and it leads to distorted a measurement values of flow through the orifice plate from -3.8% to 9%. Therefore, the fully developed inlet flow was required for accurate flow measurement by orifice flowmeter. If not, the orifice plate installed at wrong location should be re-installed or additional actions should be taken.

  • Inlet distortion test was performed at Korea Aerospace Research Institute in order to evaluate the degradation of engine performance under the distorted inlet condition. In this paper, only the inlet pressure distortion was taken into consideration. During the development process of the inlet distortion test technique, variable distortion screen was designed and evaluated under various test conditions to establish the experimental database of distortion for engine test. The result of inlet distortion test for engine shows that the operating point was changed toward the worse direction and the degradation of engine performance by inlet distortion was verified.

  • In this paper, the effect of circumferential inlet distortion on performance and stall has been experimentally investigated in a high-speed centrifugal compressor, comparing distorted cases with undistorted one. The performance of compressor was slightly deteriorated by defect of inlet static pressure which is caused by the circumferential inlet distortion. As stall was fully developed the inlet distortion did not affect the number of stall cell and the propagation velocity. It also did not affect stall inception at 40,000 and 50,000 rpm. However stall occurred at the lower flow rate for distorted flow at 60,000 rpm. For 50,000 rpm a unexpected phenomenon occurred : stall occurred first and then it disappeared.

  • The objective of present study is to find the interaction between volute and impeller of the centrifugal turbomachinery with rectangular cross-sectional volute. Flow measurement were taken in shrouded impeller with 12 backward type blades by using a five-hole pressure probe. The measurements are carried out in 7 flow rate, respectively. Primary function of a centrifugal turbo machinery volute is to serve the flow from the impeller and diffuser to pipe system. For the off-design conditions, Influence of pressure distortion was shown by these measurements. As a result, It has caused the decrease of total efficiency of centrifugal turbomachinery. We have also taken data to design volute by these measurements.

  • Single flighted screw extrusion is the most cost effective method for the production of film, sheet, pipe and the fundamental step in other processes including blow molding and injection molding The temperature and injection pressure in barrel play a very important role in quality of products. Because thermal distortion and displacement of barrel by temperature difference and injection pressure difference cause irregular resine melting and flow. In this paper thermal distortion and stress of barrel includes pressure and temperature distributions by finite element analysis to understand dynamic characteristics of barrel.

The temperature of polymer melts and injection pressure play a very important role in the injection molding machine. Thermal distortion and displacement of screw by temperature difference and injection pressure difference cause adhesive wear by metal-to-metal contact. • An numerical investigation of the flow characteristics inside a diffusing S-duct inlet with and without vortex generators(VGs) was conducted. The primary discussion herein focuses on development of secondary flow in the S-duct with and without VGs, pressure recovery and distortion at the exit are also discussed. Full three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are solved using finite volume method and $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model is employed. In order to validate the credibility of the numerical methods, predicted results of surface pressure are compared with flight test for the S-duct inlet without VGs, and it shows fairly good agreement. The result shows that VGs alter the flow characteristics in the S-duct and are effective in reducing distortion and ineffective in improving pressure recovery.
