  • Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) offer significant therapeutic promise for various regenerative therapies. However, MSC-based therapy for injury exhibits low efficacy due to the pathological environment in target tissues and the differences between in vitro and in vivo conditions. To address this issue, we developed adipose-derived MSC spheroids as a novel delivery method to preserve the stem cell microenvironment. MSC spheroids were generated by suspension culture for 3 days, and their sizes increased in a time-dependent manner. After re-attachment of MSC spheroids to the plastic dish, their adhesion capacity and morphology were not altered. MSC spheroids showed enhanced production of hypoxia-induced angiogenic cytokines such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), stromal cell derived factor (SDF), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). In addition, spheroid culture promoted the preservation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, such as laminin and fibronectin, in a culture time- and spheroid size-dependent manner. Furthermore, phosphorylation of AKT, a cell survival signal, was significantly higher and the expression of pro-apoptotic molecules, poly (ADP ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) and cleaved caspase-3, was markedly lower in the spheroids than in MSCs in monolayers. In the murine hindlimb ischemia model, transplanted MSC spheroids showed better proliferation than MSCs in monolayer. These findings suggest that MSC spheroids promote MSC bioactivities via secretion of angiogenic cytokines, preservation of ECM components, and regulation of apoptotic signals. Therefore, MSC spheroid-based cell therapy may serve as a simple and effective strategy for regenerative medicine.

  • The culture is a product of the century, and so a worldwide-recognized cultural legacy is like an incorporeal property owned by a country. It is a new legacy created In new environment conditions among countries. The meaning of this study is to give wider publicity to our intangible cultural properties through active database research. There are a significant number of museums that manage tangible cultural properties at a national level, but we can find that most stay very superficial in the aspects of database protection, classification system, and demonstration method. This is a critical physical factor that makes it difficult to create an information-oriented management system, or to manage intangible cultural properties as incorporeal entities. The preservation of tangible cultural properties may be a more proper approach of handing down valuable national characteristics to posterity In that they can show those characteristics more readily. Unlike tangible cultural properties, the preservation of intangible cultural properties requires a different approach and process. They are treated as a category of human cultural assets because of their incorporeity and formlessness. Since those intangible cultural properties to be preserved and quantified at a national level, it is an important consideration in the study on cultural properties. The objectives of this study are to present the intangible products by making the best use of the information society's merits; rediscover human elements constituting those products; ultimately help promote our cultural succession and development by databasing such human elements.

  • Although anoxic cardiac arrest produces a dry, quiet field, the ability of the myocardium to withstand the anoxic insult is uncertain. The current growth of interest in the use of various cardioplegic solutions ` has resulted in the development of a number of different solutions. In this study, 51 consecutive cases of elective open heart surgery with the aid of extracorporeal circulation were reviewed retrospectively to compare two methods of myocardial preservation. All of these open heart operations had been performed, using hemodilution principle under the moderate hypothermia at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, College of Medicine, Kyungpook National University from December, 1975 to July, 1979. In the 31 consecutive cases that form the anoxic arrest group, the operations were done with intermittent aortic cross-clamping and topical cardiac hypothermia. The heart was cooled topically by cold normal saline, which was converted to ice slush before application to the pericardial sac. Twenty of 51 consecutive cases were assigned to the cold cardioplegic method [the cardioplegic group], in which two kinds of cold cardioplegic solutions [Young solution and G IK solution] were infused into the aortic root proximal to the aortic cross clamp for myocardial preservation. Mean total aortic cross clamp times were 43 minutes in the anoxic arrest group and 67 minutes in the cardioplegic group. In the post-operative period, spontaneous regular heart beatings were recovered in 80 percent of the cardioplegic group as opposed to 25.7 percent of the anoxic arrest group. Ventricular fibrillation requiring DC shock was seen in 32.3 percent of the anoxic arrest group and 10 percent of the cardioplegic group. In the cardioplegic group, mean CPK-MB was one positive value on the first post-operative day, and mean LDH 1 was elevated to 51 0 units/ml on the 2nd post-operative day. These results indicate that protecting the myocardium with cold cardioplegia is superior to use of the anoxic cardiac arrest.

  • In this study, we proposed a method to systematically manage research data in the field of condensed matter physics, which is the most active and interdisciplinary field. In the course of the research, a questionnaire was conducted for researchers in the field of condensed matter physics. The questionnaire was constructed based on the research data management tool Data Asset Framework (DAF) and the FAIR principle for data sharing and reuse. The current status of research data management in the field of aggregated material physics was collected from 14 researchers. The collected data consisted of data on the characteristics and basic information of researchers who answered the questionnaire, data preservation and management, and data sharing and access. By analyzing the collected questionnaire results, nine problems were drawn about the characteristics of research data in the field of aggregate material physics, data collection and production, data preservation and management, data sharing and access. In this study, suggestions were made to improve the problems derived from each aspect.

  • Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils were manufactured by autoclaving method. Materials were from total, leaf, trunk and root part of Allium fistulosum L. with refined soybean oil. Physicochemical characteristics of these Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils of 4 kinds were not much different, but seasoning oil from leaf part was more green color. Total 35 volatile components were detected, in which propenyl trisulfide and propenyl propyl trisulfide were the major components. They were found as 26.94 ppm and 26.26 ppm in seasening oil from root with the highest level, respectively. Propenyl propyl disulfide was the major component as flavor characteristics in Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils. Main component of original roasted flavor in Allium fistulosum L. seasoning oils would be confirmed the root part.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the qualities of Saururus chinensis Baill. rhizomes and it content of active ingredient accenting to the storage methods. As the storage period increased the rates of weight loss, rotten rhizomes and the number of sprouts increased. Refrigerator storage resulted in the lowest weight reduction and sprouts rates, while storage in soil-filled box in a store-house was most effective in reducing spoilage rate. Five lignans from rhizome were determined by HPLC Retention time ranged $18{\sim}36$ minutes and showed saucernetin sauchinone, manassantin A, saucerneol D, and manassantin B in that order. Regardless of storage methods, the lignan content was lower after 120 days than after 30 days of storage, and increased manassantin B, manassantin A, saucernetin sauchinone, and saucerneol D in that order.

  • Vaseline, wax, soybean oil, and coated paper label were separately treated on watermelon stalk and stored at $7^{\circ}C$, in order to delay the wilting of watermelon stalk. The result showed that vaseline was most effective to delay the wilting of stalk and coated paper label was best in the outward quality. However wax and soybean oil were not effective. The factors were investigated to affect the wilting of watermelon stalk. Water content of watermelon stalk were closely related to the wilting of stalk but bacterial density of watermelon stalk was not significant. The shelf life of watermelon stalk was compared with that of watermelon flesh. The result showed that watermelon stalk was more rapidly wilted than watermelon flesh. Therefore this method was applied to prove the wilting property of watermelon stalk to determine the quality of watermelon flesh.
