A model predictive current control (MPCC) method that does not employ a cost function is proposed. The MPCC method can decrease common-mode voltages in loads fed by three-phase voltage-source inverters. Only non-zero-voltage vectors are considered as finite control elements to regulate load currents and decrease common-mode voltages. Furthermore, the three-phase future reference voltage vector is calculated on the basis of an inverse dynamics model, and the location of the one-step future voltage vector is determined at every sampling period. Given this location, a non-zero optimal future voltage vector is directly determined without repeatedly calculating the cost values obtained by each voltage vector through a cost function. Without utilizing the zero-voltage vectors, the proposed MPCC method can restrict the common-mode voltage within ± Vdc/6, whereas the common-mode voltages of the conventional MPCC method vary within ± Vdc/2. The performance of the proposed method with the reduced common-mode voltage and no cost function is evaluated in terms of the total harmonic distortions and current errors of the load currents. Simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method operated without a cost function, which can reduce the common-mode voltage.
In this paper, a Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for a five level cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) with reduced switch topology is proposed. Five switches are used here instead of conventionally used eight switches. The main contribution of this paper is to make the MPC controller work for the reduced switch topology using only 19 voltage vectors in place of conventional 61 voltage vectors for a five level CMLI. This simplifies the execution of the MPC algorithm, paving a way for the significant reduction in the computational time. The controller makes use of the excellent ability of MPC to multitask, by adding one more objective which is to reduce the average switching frequency in addition to controlling the load current. This is especially important, since switching losses and therefore switching frequency is significant for high-power applications. The trade-off of this MPC is that the current is not as smooth as the 61 vector scheme, but well within the limits of IEEE standards. The results shown prove that this MPC works well in steady state and dynamic conditions too.
This paper proposes the model predictive control with space vector modulation (SVM) method for current control of voltage-source inverter. Unlike the conventional method using a limited number of voltage vectors by switching states, the proposed method can consider various voltage vectors to identify the optimized voltage vector. The various voltage vectors are obtained by subdividing existing voltage vectors. The optimized voltage vector that minimizes the cost function is selected and applied to the inverter by using the SVM. The various voltage vectors and SVM reduce current ripples in the output AC side of the inverter compared with the conventional method. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed method are verified through simulation and experiment with a three-phase two-level voltage-source grid-connected inverter.
This paper proposes a model predictive control based on the discrete Lyapunov function to improve the performance of power electronic converters. The proposed control technique, based on the finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC), defines a cost function for the control law which is determined under the Lyapunov stability theorem with a control error compensation. The steady state and dynamic performance of the proposed control strategy has been tested under a single phase AC/DC voltage source rectifier (S-VSR). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed control strategy not only offers global stability and good robustness but also leads to a high quality sinusoidal current with a reasonably low total harmonic distortion (THD) and a fast dynamic response under linear loads.
The measurement of three-phase current is important to control the instantaneous torque of a interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) using a three-phase inverter. Therefore, shunt resistors are used in low-cost motor-driving systems to measure three-phase current instead of additional current sensors that are too expensive for these systems. However, in certain regions of a space vector plane, shunt resistors cannot reconstruct three-phase current in high-speed driving mode. In this paper, predictive current control is used to compensate for the three-phase current in those regions, which results in a reduction of current ripple in a three-shunt sensing inverter(TSSI) and torque ripple in IPMSM.

This paper investigates application of a control algorithm called model predictive sliding mode control (MPSMC) to active vibration suppression of a cantilevered aluminum beam. MPSMC is a relatively new control algorithm where model predictive control is employed to enhance sliding mode control by enforcing the system to reach the sliding surface in an optimal manner. In previous studies, it was shown that MPSMC can be applied to reduce hysteretic effects of piezoelectric actuators in dynamic displacement tracking applications. In the current study, a cantilevered beam with unknown mass distribution is selected as an experimental test bed in order to verify the robustness of MPSMC in active vibration control applications. Experimental results show that MPSMC can reduce vibration of an aluminum cantilevered beam at least by 29% regardless of modified mass distribution.

A simple and robust digital current control technique for a permanent magnet (PM) synchronous motor under the parameter variations is presented. Among the various current control schemes for an inverter-fed PM synchronous motor drive, the predictive control is known to give a superior performance. This scheme, however, requires the full knowledge of machine parameters and operating conditions, and cannot give a satisfactory response under the parameter mismatch. To overcome such a limitation, the disturbances caused by the parameter variations will be estimated by using a disturbance observer theory and used for the computation of the reference voltages by a feedforward control. Thus, the steady-state control performance can be significantly improved with a relatively simple control algorithm, while retaining the good characteristics of the predictive control. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a PM synchronous motor using the software of DSP TMS320C30 and the effectiveness is verified through the comparative simulations and experiments.
Fuzzy logic controllers have been shown better performance than conventional ones especially in highly nonlinear plants. These results are caused by the nonlinear fuzzy rules were not sufficient to cope with significant uncertainty of the plants and environment. Moreover, it is hard to make fuzzy rules consistent and complete. In this paper, we employed a predictive neural network to enhance the nonlinear inference capability. The predictive neural network generates predictive outputs of a controlled plant using the current and past outputs and current inputs. These predictive outputs are used in terms of fuzzy rules in fuzzy inferencing. From experiments, we found that the predictive term of fuzzy rules enhanced the inference capability of the controller. This predictive neural network can also help the controller cope with uncertainty of plants or environment by on-line learning.
In a AC motor used by three phase inverter, the phase current must be measured to control instantaneous torque. It is expensive to use current sensor for measuring current in low cost motor. So, shunt resistor is used to measure current. But, the method sensing the phase current using shunt resistor cannot perform the vector control in high speed because of the area that impossible to restore three phase current. In this paper, predictive current is proposed for reconstructing the current in the impossible current sensing area that reduce the current ripple in TSSI(Three shunt sensing inverter) for PMSM.
A predictive current controller for the Battery Energy Stroage System(BESS) based on space vector PWM of transformer coupled inverters is presented. The control method have many advantages such as accurate control, reduced harmonics, good dynamics, improved stability, wide control range, etc,. The simulation results show that the predictive control method with space vector PWM is suitable for the transformer coupled inverters applied to the battery energy storage system.
