  • UWB(ultra wide band) communication systems employ short pulses to transmit information which spreads the signal energy over a very wide frequency spectrum. Received signal-to-noise power ratio of UWB signals is an important factor in determining the accuracy of a positioning system. As the signal to noise power ratio gets higher, positioning errors decrease since noise becomes less effective. Calculation of signal to noise power ratio as a function of communication distance provides important guidelines for the system design. And the performance of a positioning system also depends heavily on the channel model. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the performance of the received signal to noise power ratio according to the communication distance was better in the LOS channel environment than in the Non LOS(line of sight) channel environment. And as the symbol interval of the preamble signal increases at a specific communication distance, the channel capacity of the UWB system increases.

  • In this paper, a new clear channel assessment (CCA) method: cascaded-CCA, is proposed. The primary motivation for the proposed approach is to integrate the respective advantages of two standard CCA mechanisms, energy detect and preamble detect, to arrive at a new dual threshold CCA family that can provide greater flexibility towards tuning MAC performance. Cascaded-CCA integrates energy efficiency of the energy detector (ED) and the reliability of the preamble detector (PD). The probability of detection/false alarm and power consumption of cascaded-CCA in the CCA modules of IEEE 802.11b are analyzed and compared with ED and PD as an example. The performance of cascaded-CCA is explored via MATLAB simulations that implement the CCA modules and medium access control (MAC) protocol for IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4. Simulation results showed that cascaded-CCA improves the energy efficiency significantly compared to ED-only or PD-only CCA. In addition, ED, PD, and cascaded CCA are applied to a cognitive network scenario to validate the effectiveness of the proposed cascaded-CCA.

  • The frame synchronization should be acquired before performing other data-aided receiving algorithms, such as data-aided channel equalizing, beam-forming and phase, symbol timing, and frequency synchronizing, since all of them are using preamble or training sequence to estimate the amount of error from the received signal. In this paper, we present a new frame synchronization scheme for underwater ultrasonic image burst transmission system, which computes the correlation between received symbol sequence and one CAZAC sequence, composed of the latter half of the first CAZAC sequence of preamble and the first half of the second CAZAC sequence of preamble and then compares a threshold value. If the correlation value is bigger than the threshold value, the frame detector determines that the frame synchronization is achieved at that sample.

  • In this paper, we propose a packet prioritization scheme using preamble signal and backoff time which is designed to provide a differentiated channel occupation with a packet priority in wireless sensor networks. This scheme aims at enabling QoS such as fast delivery of high priority packets by reducing their backoff time as well as thus securing higher channel occupation. We expect that it could also improve the channel utilization of the entire network by avoiding unnecessary channel contention. For the purpose, we add new features of multiple queue and preamble modification to the TinyOS based B-MAC. This scheme achieves 82-88% reduction in delivery time of high priority packets, thus it enables realtime support for urgent applications.

  • Beamforming technique at the ground station is known to be effective in obtaining coverage extension or SNR gain for communication with unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). When a UAV moves, periodic beam tracking is necessary to maintain beam gain. In order to track beams for multiple UAVs, the ground station needs to receive different preamble sequences from multiple UAVs. In this paper, a preamble sequence design technique is proposed for beam tracking in a GMSK-based communication system with multiple UAVs. Hadamard sequence is considered for the design of preamble sequence due to its ideal cross-correlation property. A preamble sequence appropriate for a GMSK communication system with multiple UAVs is proposed after analyzing the properties of received signal in a GMSK system with the input of Hadamard sequence.

  • This paper has been presented a design of a POCSAG decoder in RT-level VHDL and implemented in a FPGA chip, and tested. In a single clock of 76.8KHz, the decoder receives all the data of the rate of 512/1200/2400bps and has maximum 2-own frames for service enhancement. To improve decoder performance, the decoder uses a preamble detection cosidering 9% frequency tolerance, a SCW detction and a ICW detection at each 4 bit. The decoder also corrects a address data and a message data up to 2 bits and proposes the PF (preamble frequency) error for saving battery. The decoder increases a battery life owing to turn off RF circuits when the preamble signal is detected with nises. The chip has been designed in RT-level VHdL, synthesized into logic gates using power view$^{TM}$ of viewlogic software. The chip has been implemented in an ALTERA EPF81188GC232-3 FPGA chip with 98% usability, and fully tested in shield room and field room. The chip has been proved that the wrong detection numbers of preamble of noises are significantly reduced in the pager system using PDI 2400 through the real field test. The receiving performance is improved by 20% of aaverage, compared with other existing systems.

  • In this paper, a new handover procedure for OFDM-based multi-hop relay systems is proposed to reduce the handover overhead by distinguishing inter-cell handover event from intra-cell handover event at the level of physical layer using a hierarchical design concept of preamble. A Subcell ID concept for identifying RS in a cell is proposed in the design of hierarchical manner, in addition to the existing Cell ID for identifying BS. The decision on either inter-cell handover or intra-cell handover is made by the signal quality measure of CBINR(Carrier of BS to Interference and Noise Ratio) and CRINR(Carrier of RS to Interference and Noise Ratio), provided by the hierarchical preamble. The proposed handover procedure can simplify scanning procedure and skip/simplify network re-entry procedure (capability negotiation, authorization, registration), resulting in a significant reduction of handover overhead.

  • This paper is focused on the modulation scheme detection of the IEEE 802.11 standard. In the IEEE 802.11ac standard, the information of the modulation scheme is indicated by the modulation coding scheme (MCS) included in the VHT-SIG-A of the preamble field. Transmitting end determines the MCS index suitable for the low signal to noise ratio (SNR) situation and transmits the data accordingly. Since data field decoding can take place only when the receiving end acquires the MCS index information of the frame. Therefore, accurate MCS detection must be guaranteed before data field decoding. However, since the MCS index information is the information obtained through preamble field decoding, the detection rate can be affected significantly in a low SNR situation. In this paper, we propose a relatively robust modulation classification method based on deep learning to solve the low detection rate problem with a conventional method caused by a low SNR.

  • We propose how to improve the performance of TOA estimation in UWB MB-OFDM systems. The scheme is based on the correlation between the OFDM preamble and the template signal. The validity of the proposed scheme is shown using the simulation results, where it is shown that the performance of the proposed scheme outperforms that of the existing schemes

  • The fast growing of the number of users requires the development of reliable communication systems able to provide higher data rates. In order to meet those requirements, techniques such as Multiple Input Multiple Out (MIMO) and Orthogonal Frequency Division multiplexing (OFDM) have been developed in the recent years. In order to combine the benefits of both techniques, the research activity is currently focused on MIMO-OFDM systems. In addition, for a fast wireless channel environment, the data rate and reliability can be optimized by setting the modulation and coding adaptively according to the channel conditions; and using sub-carrier frequency, and power allocation techniques. Depending on how accurate the feedback-based system obtain the channel state information (CSI) and feed it back to the transmitter without delay, the overall system performance would be poor or optimal. In this paper, we propose a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) estimation algorithm where the preamble is known for both sides of the transciever. Through simulations made over several channel environments, we prove that our proposed SNR estimation algorithm is more accurate compared with the traditional SNR estimation.
