For the calculation of foundation settlement it is recommended to take into account so called influence zone inside the subsoil bellow the foundation structure. Influence zone inside the subsoil is the region where the load has a substantial influence on the deformation of the soil skeleton. The soil skeleton is pre-consolidated or over consolidated due to the original geostatic stress state. An excavation changes the original geostatic stress state and it creates the space for the load transferred from upper structure. The theory of elastic layer in Westergard manner is selected for the vertical stress calculation. The depth of influence zone is calculated from the equality of the original geostatic stress and the new geostatic stress due to excavation combined with the vertical stress from the upper structure. Two close formulas are presented for the influence zone calculation. Using ADINA code we carried out several numerical examples to verify the proposed analytical formulas and to enhance their use in civil engineering practice. Otherwise, the FEM code accuracy can be control.
Nowadays many urban subways are frequently constructed under the building and the river by the use of tunneling method. Especially, the majority of the tunnel are constructed even with shallow depth under the ground in the weathered soil. Since the tunnel are generally designed on the basis of the geographic soil investigation, the stability of the tunnel should be checked with the realistic data instrumented during construction. The displacement of the tunnel occurs in front of the end face during the excavation of the tunnel, which is called as pre-displacement. The total displacement can be figured from the exact pre-displacement, which is very difficult to measure without using any device installed in front of the tunnel end face. In this study, the pre-displacement measured from horizontal inclinometer was analyzed to know the co-relation with the total displacement and also, the trend and the characteristics of the tunnel deformation during construction was suggested through the regression analysis of the measured data.

As the excavation depths during excavation works in urban sites are getting deeper and bigger, It is necessary to study for the improvements to solve the problems in the excavation processes. This research deals with the excavation method that can not only minimize the effect on the surrounding constructions, but also shorten the construction period of the excavation work. For this research, there have been an extensive literature review of the bibliographic data about Slurry Wall Method, which is recognized around the world, and the analysis of the major problems in the existing ineffective construction step. These efforts led to the technical improvements. Accordingly, a new construction method applied with the new technical factors has been suggested, and it was possible to compare Slurry Wall Method with the construction method and analyze them on the base of the examples using the suggested method. This new method decreased the excavation period by 15 days. It took only 33days to finish the excavation work, as compared to 48 days that can be seen on the pre-modification schedule. Furthermore, the suggested method in this research is safer, more economically feasible, and better for the environment than Slurry Wall Method. It will contribute to shortening the construction period of Slurry Wall Method in the end.

A three-arch NATM tunnel with a total length of 53.5m has been constructed for a metropolitan subway station in Daejon, Korea. The tunnel, whose crown is located 22m below the ground, crosses the old Daejon station underneath. Since the tunnel comprises a very large section (10${\times}$28 m; largest in Korea), it shows complicated mechanical behaviors, especially near portal, due to its short length relative to width. As far as its construction step is concerned, the center tunnel is excavated with pre-excavated pilot tunnel, which is a unique feature of this tunnel (first in Korea) to secure safety during construction and prevent excessive settlements. The both side tunnels are then excavated along with the center tunnel. Since significant amount of settlement was predictable from the design stage, extensive monitoring was performed during construction. During excavation of the side tunnels, unexpected large settlements up to ${\~}$140mm (estimated 41.8 mm at design stage) was measured at the center tunnel. In this paper, we study the causes of this unusually large ground settlement. We believe that the extra-wide tunnel excavation increases the stress influence zone of portal in longitudinal direction and consequently add more settlements to the existing due to excavation and consolidation.

The inverse kinematics problem of a reclaimer which excavates and transports raw materials in a raw yard is investigated. Because of the geometric feature of the equipment in which scooping buckets are attached around the rotating disk, kinematic redundancy occurs in determining joint variable. Link coordinates are introduced following the Denavit-Hartenbery representation. For a given excavation point the forward kinematics yields 3 equations, however the number of involved joint variables in the equations is four. It is shown that the rotating disk at the end of the boom provides an extra passive degree of freedom. Two approaches are investigated in obtaining inverse kinematics solutions. The first method pre-assigns the height of excavation point which can be determined through path planning. A closed form solution is obtained for the first approach. The second method exploits the orthogonality between the normal vector at the excavation point and the z axis of the end-effector coordinate system. The geometry near the reclaiming point has been approximated as a plane, and the plane equation has been obtained by the least square method considering 8 adjacent points near the point. A closed form solution is not found for the second approach, however a linear approximate solution is provided.
This study is based on the reseach about conte. track$(Dugso\~wonju)$ double line electric railway tunnel. Authors conducted test blasting to examine the effect of blasting pollution. To be conducted safe and effective work by using this result studies sailable substitution excavation method. No-vibration section generates continuously the vibration of breaker working to go abreast necessarily secondary fragmentation working and according to judging that application is actually difficult in case of the condition of study site, the period of construction, the cost of construction, the efficiency of construction, pre-heavy caliber horizontally boring working + line drilling method + vibration control secondary blasting method excavation working is possible from level within blast vibration standard.

During the process of excavation for substructures of buildings, precise and constant measurements of retaining wall displacement is crucial for construction to be complete and safe. Currently an inclinometer is used to measure displacement around the perimeter of an excavation site. The existing inclinometer system requires an instrument to be placed inside pre-bored holes for each measurement with an typical interval of two weeks. This makes it difficult to obtain continuous displacement data, especially during a critical time such as rainy season in summer. Also, the existing inclinometer is placed at certain distance away from the retaining wall system itself. Thus, exact measurement of retaining wall movement is compromised because of the distance between the retaining wall and the inclinometer. This paper presents the development of wireless inclinometer system for the displacement measurement of retaining walls by being attached directly to the retaining wall. The result of the application of the developed systems are provided with advanced ubiquitous sensor network (USN) system features. The USN technique incorporated into the system enables users to monitor movement data from wherever possible and convenient such as construction manager's office on site or any other places connected through internet. The research work presented in this paper will provide a basis to save construction time and cost by preventing safe-related unexpected delay of construction due to the failure or collapse of retaining walls.
When the ground is excavated adjacent to the existing tunnel, which is loaded by the surcharge on the ground surface, the tunnel stability would be very sensitive to the deformation of the ground induced by the horizontal displacement of braced wall. The stability of the existing surcharged tunnel could be controlled by pre-loading on the braced wall. In this paper, it was investigated, if it would be possible to keep the existing surcharged tunnel stable by preventing the horizontal displacement of a braced wall by imposing the pre-loading during the ground excavation. For this purpose, large scale model tests were performed in a scale 1/10 at the test pit which was 2.0m in width and 6.0m in height and 4.0m in length. Isotropic test ground was constructed homogeneously by wet sand. Model tunnel was constructed in the test ground. Surcharge was loaded on the ground surface above the tunnel. During the tests, the behavior of model tunnel and model braced wall was measured. Numerical analyses were also performed in the same condition as the tests. And their results were compared to that of the model tests. Consequently, the effect of a surcharge could be compensated by imposing the pre-loading on the braced wall. The existing tunnel and the braced wall could be kept stable by preventing the horizontal displacement of the braced wall through pre-loading, although the tunnel is surcharged.

This paper presents the case studies of Tubular Roof construction Method(T.R.c.M) and Semi Shield method, which were applied to the tunnel excavation under the pre-existing railways. It was proved that T.R.c.M was an effective and safe method for the tunnel excavated in soft soil, giving little damage to the railways located a few meters above. Semi Shield was also performed successfully to bore a tunnel in soft and hard rock, minimizing the ground settlement and tilting of vulnerable fuel tanks. Site and soil conditions are also discussed, which led these relatively new methods to success. Finally, comparison of the measurement results and the design values are made to verify and improve the current design practice.

Horizontal displacement of slurry wall with strut is analyzed using 2-D numerical stress-displacement program, FLAC. Validation of the program results are performed using the pre- and ongoing excavation sections and further displacement is predicted in the stage of strut removal. The result show that the calculated displacement was very close to the measured displacement when 40% in-situ strut preloading is applied to the strut loading of the program considering the horizontal spacing of struts in the field. It was found that construction efficiency can be improved by partially removing the struts before putting slabs in the stage of subway structure construction.
