Frequency is regarded as one of most important indices for the operating power systems. Several digital techniques for measuring frequency have been presented in the last decades. This paper proposes a design and implementation an adaptive scheme using phase angle difference calculation fort frequency measuring in power system. The advantages of the proposed technique are demonstrated by fault signals from EMTP simulation and user defined arbitrary signals by Excel program. The proposed technique is compared with the conventional methods. Performance teat results indicate that the proposed technique provides accurate measures in pretence of noise and harmonics and in case faults and is suitable for measurement near-nominal, nominal. and off-nominal frequencies. We can see that It will be useful in microprocessor based relays and digital metiers that need to measure power system frequency.

Power transformer protective relay should block the tripping during magnetizing inrush and rapidly operate the tripping during internal faults. Recently, the frequency environment of power system has been made more complicated and the quantity of 2nd frequency component in inrush state has been decreased because of the improvement of core steel. And then, traditional approaches will likely be maloperate in the case of magnetizing inrush with low second harmonic component and internal faults with high second harmonic component. This paper proposes a new relaying algorithm to enhance the fault detection sensitivities of conventional techniques by using a fuzzy logic approach. The proposed fuzzy based relaying algorithm consists of flux-differential current derivative curve, harmonic restraint, and percentage differential characteristic curve. The proposed relaying was tested with relaying signals obtained from EMTP simulation package and showed a fast and accurate trip operation.
In this paper, we introduce a new method of detecting faults for a power converter unit in Control Rod Control System. The faults of a power converter unit can exert harmful influence upon the operation of Control Rod Drive Mechanisms and the control of the reactor output. This situation makes the quick and correct detection of failures in a power converter unit very important. We devise a new method of fault detection for the digital power controller and improve the drawbacks of the existing fault detector.
In this paper, we introduce a new method for detecting and estimating faults on a power line using the time-frequency domain reflectometry system. The system rests upon time-frequency signal analysis and uses a chirp signal which is multiplied by Gaussian envelope. The chirp signal is used as a reference signal, and we can get the reflected signal from a fault on a wire. To detect and estimate faults, we analyze the reflected signal by Wigner time-frequency distribution function and normalized time-frequency cross correlation function. In this paper we design an optimal reference signal for power line and implement a system for estimating fault distance on a power line with the TFDR implemented by PXI equipments. This approach is verified by some experiments with HIV 2.25mm power lines.
This paper attempts to develop the algorithms and computer program for load flow solution and faults analysis of large power system by small digital computer. The Conventional methods for load flow solution and fault analysis of large power system require too much amount of computer memory space and computing time. Therefore, this paper describes the methad for reducing the computer memory space and computing time as follows. (1) Load Flow Solution; This method is to store each primitive impedance of lines along with a list of bus numbers corresponding to the both terminals of lines, and to store only nonzero element of bus admittance matrix. (2) Faults Analysis: This method is to partition a large power system into several groups of subsystems, form individual bus impedance matrix, store them in the storage, and assemble the only required portion of them to original total system by algorithm.
In this paper, a fuzzy expert system is developed for fault diagnoisis of a drum-type boiler system in fossil power plants. The develped fuzzy espert system is composed of knowledge base, fuzzification module, knowledge base process module, knowledge base management module, inference module, and linguistic approximation module. The main objective of the fuzzy expert system is to check the states of the system including the drum level and detect faults such as the feedwater flow sensor fault, feedwater flow control valve fault, and water wall bube rupture. The fuzzy expert system diagnoses faults using process values, manipulated values, and knowledge base which is built via interviews and questionaries with the experts on the plant operations. Finally, the validity of the developed fuzzy expert system is shown via experiments using the digital simulator for boiler system is Seoul Power Plant Unit 4.
According to the survey, abnormal condition of the system is the main source for interrupting an elevator service, especially faults in worm gears used for the traction machine. Worm gear is popularly used in traction machine for middle and low speed elevators. Elevators need high reliability and stability, because they are closely related to human life. Usually, traction machine is applied to drive the elevators that have height about 35 m and it is an important mechanical unit for riding quality in elevators. There are some research results about types of vibration fault for worm gear in International Association Elevator Engineers (IAEE). But this study concerns with diagnosis of various faults in elevator worm gear using vibration signal. The analysis of fault characteristics is compared with previous researches in traction machine.
The analysis of distribution line faults is essential to the proper protections of the power system. A high impedance fault does not make enough current to cause conventional protective devices. It is well known that undesirable operating conditions and certain types of faults on electric distribution feeders cannot be detected by using conventional protection system. This paper describes an algorithm using back-propagation neural network for pattern recognition and detection of high impedance faults. Fractal dimensions are estimated for distinction between random noise and chaotic behavior in the power system. The fractal dimension of the line current is also used as a indication of the high impedance fault.
Most transmission lines pass through mountainous terrain and deep valleys, to avoid populated areas. Accordingly, the impact of climate changes, environmental conditions and system expansion have caused an increase in transmission line system fault rates. KEPCO has developed and applied phase-spacers to reduce contact faults between phases. Contact between phases represented 9% of total line faults before the devices were installed. Phase-spacers have reduced faults by up to 3.4% since the phase-spacers were installed in 2005. Also, recently developed devices provide additional economic benefits as they cost about a third of the price as similar devices introduced in foreign countries. Phase-spacers are an effective way to prevent phase contact accidents by maintaining physical space between phases. These spacers will be implemented in areas where contacts are likely to occur. They are expected to reduce accident rates and improve power quality.
When the faults occur in power systems, the protective relay plays a roles of protecting power systems. It is important that the protective relay have high selectiveity and sencitivity performance in power system by correct setting the relays. This paper proposed a testing methods if the reliability of digital relay as simulating the response of relay at faults in the real power system operation environment.
