A Design and Control of Bi-directional Non-isolated DC-DC Converter with Coupled Inductors for Rapid Electric Vehicle Charging System

  • This paper presents a simple and cost-effective stand-alone rapid battery charging system of 30kW for electric vehicles. The proposed system mainly consists of active front-end rectifier of neutral point clamped 3-level type and non-isolated bi-directional dc-dc converter of multi-phase interleaved half-bridge topology with coupled inductors. The charging system is designed to operate for both lithium-polymer and lithium-ion batteries. The complete charging sequence is made up of three sub-interval operating modes; pre-charging mode, constant-current mode, and constant-voltage mode. The pre-charging mode employs the staircase shaped current profile to accomplish shorter charging time while maintaining the reliable operation of the battery. The proposed system is able to reach the full-charge state within less than 16min for the battery capacity of 8kWh by supplying the charging current of 67A. The optimal discharging algorithm for Vehicle to the Grid (V2G) operation has been adopted to maintain the discharging current of 1C. Owing to the simple and compact power conversion scheme, the proposed solution has superior module-friendly mechanical structure which is absolutely required to realize flexible power expansion capability in a very high-current rapid charging system.

  • In this paper, the efficiency of the solar system is lowered due to the partial shading such as the environmental factors of the solar panel. In order to solve this problem, a DC OPTIMIZER is proposed for a maximum power generation system of a photovoltaic panel. The proposed DC OPTIMIZER is composed of a buck structure that performs the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control of each module of the solar panel, thus maximizing the efficiency. In order to verify the proposed DC Optimizer, the efficiency was measured by varying the irradiance using a solar simulator instead of the solar panel. As a result, it showed high efficiency characteristics as the maximum energy conversion efficiency was 99.3% at $800w/m^2$, $900w/m^2$, and the average efficiency was 99.06% excluding $100w/m^2$. The maximum efficiency of MPPT was 99.97% at $200w/m^2$, efficiency showed excellent performance.

  • The emergence of high voltage conversion applications has resulted in a trend of using semiconductor device series associations. Series associations allow for operation at blocking voltages, which are higher than the nominal voltage for each of the semiconductor devices. The main challenge with these topologies is finding a way to guarantee the voltage balance between devices in both blocking and switching transients. Most of the methods that have been proposed to mitigate static and dynamic voltage unbalances result in increased losses within the device. This paper introduces a new series stack topology, where the voltage unbalances are reduced. This in turn, mitigates the switching losses. The proposed topology consists of a circuit that ensures the soft switching of each device, and one auxiliary circuit that allows for switching energy recovery. The principle for the topology operation is presented and experimental tests are performed for two modules. The topology performs excellently for switching transients on each of the devices. The voltage static unbalances were limited to 10%, while the activation/deactivation delay introduced by the lower module IGBT driver takes place in the dynamic unbalances. Thus, the switching losses are reduced by 40%, when compared to hard switching configurations.

  • In this paper proposes the soft-switching boost converter and MPPT control for improving the efficiency of PV system. The proposed converter designed H-bridge auxiliary resonant circuit. By this circuit, all of the switching devices perform the soft switching under the zero voltage and zero current condition. Therefore the periodic switching losses can be decreased at turn on, off. The soft switching boost converter designs for 1.5[kW] solar module of the power conversion. Thus, this soft switching boost converter is simulated by MATLAB simulation using Newton-Method algorithm. As a result, Proposed Soft Switching Converter compared to a typical boost converter switching loss was reduced about 61%. And the overall system efficiency was verified to increase about 3.3%.

  • The small signal model for input series-output parallel connected converter system employing charge control together with input capacitor voltage feedback loop is developed. From the model developed, the effect of input capacitor voltage feedback loop to the system stability and outer loop compensator design is analyzed. Theoretical results and simulation show that input capacitor voltage feedback loop has no critical effects on the system stability, so the system can be reduced to a equivalent single module for the stability analysis and outer loop compensator design.

  • In this study, a novel method for sweeping automatic linearization of wavelength swept laser is proposed. Through the test performed on the implemented laser, the linear sweeping is held up well with a 97% decrease in nonlinearity, and 60 nm sweeping range, 1 kHz sweeping frequency, and 8.8 mW average optical power were obtained. The proposed method uses fiber Bragg grating array, optical-electronic conversion circuit, FPGA embedded module, and a LabVIEW program to generate new compensated wave patterns which were applied to the fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter. Linear sweeping can reduce the cumbersome and time-consuming recalibration process required for nonlinear sweeping. Additionally, the proposed method provides more accurate measurement results for the structure safety monitoring system.
