  • Design procedure of WEC (wave energy converter) using the heaving motion of a floating cylinder-type buoy coupled with LEG (linear electric generator) system is introduced. It is seen that the maximum power can actually be obtained at the optimal conditions ($c_{PTO}=b_T$, ${\omega}={\omega}_N$). Then, based on the developed theory, several design strategies are proposed to further enhance the maximum PTO (power take off), which includes the intentional mismatching with the heave natural frequency, which is 15% higher value than the peak frequency of input velocity spectrum. By using the intentional mismatching strategy, the generated power is actually increased and the corresponding draft as well as the required PTO damping value is significantly reduced, which is a big advantage in manufacturing the WEC with practical LEG (linear electric generator) system.

  • The wave spectrum was generated from wave data measured at the Chagwi-do site in Jeju, where a 10MW class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system will be installed. The latching control technology (Sheng et al.[2015]) was applied in order to improve the extracted power from WEC (Wave Energy Converter), which is heaving in corresponding irregular waves. The peak period as a representative value of irregular waves was used when we determined the latching duration. From the numerical results in the time-domain analysis, the latching control technology can significantly improve the extracted power about 50%.

  • The wave power plant is a generating system to convert the wave energy resources to electric energy. ´CHUJEON A´, which is a prototype of wave power plant developed by KORDI(Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute), has been launched for its performance test. A wound rotor induction machine is adopted as a generator for the power plant to acquire constant frequency and voltage over wide range of rotor speed. Because the generator of ´CHUJEON A´ has no connection to the power grid line on land, all of the processes to generate and consume the electricity have to be conducted on the floating plant. This paper deals with the design and implementation of the unmanned control system for ´CHUJEON A´. The system includes generator control system, power conversion and charging system, data acquisition and wireless communication system ...

  • When a ship is course-keeping in the open seas, autopilot system is adapted. The design of autopilot system is very important for improvement of ship′s element research. Automatic steering system consists of autopilot device, power unit, steering gear, magnetic or gyro compass and ship dynamics. In order to evaluate automatic steering system of ships in open seas. we need to know the characteristics of each component of the system, and also to know the characteristics of disturbance to ship dynamics. In this paper, I provide evaluation method of autopilot navigation system of the fishing ship. Prediction method based on the principle of linear superposition is introduced for irregular disturbance. For the evaluation of automatic steering system of a ship, "performance index" is introduced from the viewpoint of energy saving and calculation method is frequency response analysis. Finally, I carried out calculation of sensitivity of control constants of autopilot with various conditions of ocean environments.

  • Recently, the development for USV-related technologies are actively growing up in military domain. The USV (unmanned surface vehicle) conducts various missions for national defense at maritime environment. For succeed the missions, the USV essentially needs an automatic and remote control platform which includes propulsion system, steering system, control system, power system and so on. In this paper, we developed an integrated control system for the platform equipments and verified effectiveness of the developed system. To do this, we designed a system architecture and implemented a main control system that processes and controls platform equipments by received command. Also we developed components of designed architecture such as engine control device, water-jet control device and power control device. For test and verify the developed system, we designed and made a test-bed of engine and water-jet with related parts, and proceeded a basin test for verifying the developed system based on the test-bed.

  • As regulations of emissions from ships become more stringent, electric propulsion systems have been increasingly used to solve this problem in vessels ranging from large merchant ships to small and medium-sized ships. Methods for improving the efficiency of the electric propulsion system include the improvement of power sources; the use of a system linked to environmentally friendly power sources, such as batteries, fuel cells, and solar power; and the development of hardware and control methodology for rectifiers, power conversion devices, and propulsion motors. The method using a phase-shifting transformer with diodes has been widely used for rectification. Power semiconductor devices with grid connection to an environmentally friendly power source using DC distribution, a variable speed power source, and the application of small and medium-sized electric propulsion systems have been developed. Accordingly, the demand for active front-end (AFE) rectifiers is increasing. In this study, a method using a neural network rather than a conventional proportional-integral controller was proposed to control the AFE rectifier. Tested controller data were used to design a neural network controller trained through MATLAB/Simulink. The neural network controller was applied to a rectification system designed using PSIM software. The results indicated the effectiveness of improving the waveform and power factor DC output stage according to the load variation. The proposed system can be applied as a rectification system for small and medium-sized environmentally friendly ships.

  • In this study, we constructed several scenarios that are required for LED lighting, and we designed and implemented an LED lighting control system to operate these scenarios to confirm their behavior. An LED lighting control system is a hybrid control board that is designed by combining LED controllers and SMPS, consisting of an AC/DC power supply part that converts AC 220 V into DC 12 V, and a drive and control part that controls the scenario and color of the LED module. Conventional LED light controllers have an input power of DC 12 V, so when using the input AC 220 V, the SMPS must be connected to the LED light controller. To eliminate this inconvenience, a hybrid LED lighting control system was configured to combine LED lighting controllers and SMPS into one control system. Furthermore, we designed a control system to represent the most appropriate color according to the input of the distance and illumination using a fuzzy control system to conduct computer simulations.

  • This study discusses data collection, calculation of wind and wave-induced resistance, and speed-power analysis of an 8,600 TEU container ship. Data acquisition system of the ship operator was improved to obtain the data necessary for the analysis, which was accomplished using SPA (Ship Performance Analysis, Park et al., 2019) in conformation with ISO15016:2015. From a previous operation profile of the container, the standard operating conditions of mean draft were 12.5 m and 13.6 m, which were defined with the mean stowage configuration of each condition. Model tests, including the load-variation test, were conducted to validate new ship performance and for the speed-power analysis. The major part of the added resistance of container ship is due to the wind. To check the reliability of wind-resistance calculation results, the resistance coefficients, added resistance, and speed-power analysis results using the Fujiwara regression formula (ISO15016:2015) and Computational fluid dynamics (Ryu et al., 2016; Jeon et al., 2017) analysis were compared. Wind speed and direction measured using an anemometer were used for wind-resistance calculation and the wave resistance was calculated using the wave-height and direction-data from weather information. Also, measured water temperature was used to calculate the increase in resistance owing to the deviation in water density. As a result, the SPA analysis using measured data and weather information was proved to be valid and able to identify the ship's resistance propulsion performance. Even with little difference in the air-resistance coefficient value, both methods provide sufficient accuracy for speed-power analysis. The differences were unnoticeable when the speed-power analysis results using each method were compared. Also, speed-power analysis results of the 8,600 TEU container ship in two draft conditions show acceptable trends when compared with the model test results and are also able to show power increase owing to hull fouling and aging. Thus, results of speed-power analysis of the existing 8,600 TEU container ship using the SPA program appropriately exhibit the characteristics of speed-power performance in deal conditions.

  • Due to global decarbonization movement and tightening of maritime emissions restrictions, the shipping industry is going to switch to alternative fuels. Among candidates of alternative fuel, methanol is promising for decreasing SOx and CO2 emissions, resulting in minimum climate change and meeting the goal of green shipping. In this study, a novel combined system of direct methanol solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), gas turbine (GT), and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) targeted for marine vessels was proposed. The SOFC is the main power generator of the system, whereas the GT and PEMFC could recover waste heat from the SOFC to generate useful power and increase waste heat utilizing efficiency of the system. Thermodynamics model of the combined system and each component were established and analyzed. Energy and exergy efficiencies of subsystems and the entire system were estimated with participation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The energy and exergy efficiencies of the overall multigeneration system were estimated to be 76.2% and 30.3%, respectively. The combination of GT and PEMFC increased the energy efficiency by 18.91% compared to the SOFC stand-alone system. By changing the methanol distribution ratio from 0.05 to 0.4, energy and exergy efficiencies decreased by 15.49% and 5.41%, respectively. During the starting up and maneuvering period of vessels, a quick response from the power supply system and propulsion plant is necessary. Utilization of PEMFC coupled with SOFC has remarkable meaning and benefits.

  • This study focuses on systematic structure of factors, which affect commercialization of ocean science and technology (OST), applying both grounded theory methodology (GTM) and semantic network analysis methodology (SNAM) by using in-depth interviews with 8 specialists previously experienced in the same field. This study further focuses on clarification of the distinctiveness and universality of commercialization factors on OST by comparatively analyzing on the commercialization factors of general sciences and technologies. Using SNAM, it was determined that commercialization success required connected support system, government support, technology marketing, technology power and characteristics of commercialized entities, which were identified as dominant factors. GTM presented an outcome that connected support systems among participants in commercialization and found that research institute strategies are significant factors in the core phenomenon of commercialization, while technology marketing, technology power and market-oriented technology are important conditions. In addition, the factors of technology, market, connection of participants and government support of commercialized entities are shown as equally important factors for commercialization of ocean science and technology. Secondly, SNAM results indicate that ocean science characteristics depend on a network of government support, research institute strategy, organization and manpower, capital power, and technology marketing, as these ocean science characteristics have been identified as significant factors in the GTM study. It has been determined that technology, market and government support should be connected in order for commercialization of ocean science and technology (OST). Moreover, commercialization methods, applied to the marketing of commercialization of ocean science and technology is differentiated from others since commercialization success is more relevant to these factors.
