  • This paper proposes a DVS method which effectively reduces the power consumption of multimedia signal processor. Analytic derivations of effective range of its power saving factor are obtained with the assumption of a Gaussian distribution for the frame-based computational burden of the multimedia processor. A closed form equation of the power saving factor is derived in terms of the mean-standard deviation of the distribution. An MPEG-2 video decoder algorithm and AAC encoder algorithm are tested on ARM9 RISC processor for the experimental verification of the power saying of the proposed DVS approach. The experimental results with diverse MPEG-2 video and audio files show 50~30% power saving factor and show good agreement with those of the analytically derived values.

  • Building energy saving is one of the most important issues in these days. Control algorithm for energy saving should be designed properly to reduce power consumption in building. Recently, building energy system consists of hybrid energy system coupling with RE (Renewable Energy) source. In this paper, an optimum control algorithm for building energy saving is applied to BEMS (Building Energy Management System) by using an outdoor air temperature prediction strategy. BEMS coupling with renewable energy can control HVAC (Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning) system effectively. In order to verify the effectiveness of building energy saving, BEMS was tested for several months at a laboratorial chamber with an air conditioner, fan and heater. To this end BEMS embedded control algorithm has been tested successfully.

  • Recently, many researchers have studied to solve the energy consumption of network equipments since the interest of Green IT has been increased. In this paper, we apply Low Power Idle (LPI) to OBS network to reduce energy consumption of network devices. Many previous researches have focused on maximizing the sleep time of network equipments to increase the energy saving efficiency of LPI. But transition overhead caused by LPI might not only depreciate the performance of energy saving but also increase packet delay. In this paper, Transition Decision (TD) algorithm is proposed to improve energy saving efficiency by reducing the number of unnecessary transition and guarantee the required QoS such as packet delay. To evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm, we model OBS edge router with LPI by OPNET and analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm in views of energy saving, transition count and average packet delay.

  • This paper presents an effective energy saving algorithm for lighting control systems using M&V method in various buildings and factories. It is important to aggregate a various demand side resource which is controllable at the peak power time to reduce the energy cost. Previous demand side algorithm appropriate for building is based on peak power. In this paper, we develop the new energy saving algorithm using M&V method to reduce the quantity of power consumption. The simulation results show that the proposed method is very effective.

  • Advances in wireless networking technology has engendered a new paradigm of computing, called mobile computing, in which users carrying portable devices have access to a shared infrastructure independent of their physical locations. Wireless communication has some restraints such as disconnection, low bandwidth, a variation of available bandwidth, network heterogeneity, security risk, small storage, and low power. Power adaptation routing scheme overcome the shortage of power by adjusting the output power, was proposed. Existing power saving routing algorithm has some minor effect such as seceding from shortest path to minimize the power consumption, and number of nodes that Participate in routing than optimal because it select a next node with considering only consuming power. This paper supplements the weak point in the existing power saving routing algorithm as considering the gradual approach to final destination and the number of optimal nodes that participate in routing.

  • We have experienced an explosive increase of the IoT(Internet of Things) technology based devices including smart phones and the wireless communications. Also the growing power consumption in IEEE 802.11 WLANs(Wireless LANs) driven by these dramatic increases in not only mobile users and but also wireless APs(Access Points). To reduce the power consumption, this paper proposes a wireless AP power saving algorithm, which minimizes the transmission power without decrease the transmission and carrier sense ranges. A wireless AP which is use in our algorithm checks its own original coverage periodically for whether there is a new STA(Station) or not when its transmission power is decreased. Moreover, if there are no signaling message to connect the wireless AP, it changes its operation mode Wake-up to sleep. A Result shows that the proposed AP algorithm can reduce the total power consumption of the wireless AP approximated 18% and 35% compared to the conventional wireless AP with and without the existing power saving algorithm, respectively.

  • As more and more cores are integrated on a single chip, power consumption has become an important problem in system-on-a-chip (SoC) design. Multiple supply voltage (MSV) design is one of popular solutions to reduce power consumption. We propose a new method that determines voltage level of cores before floorplanning stage. Besides, our algorithm includes a new approach to optimize wire length and the number of level shifters without any significant decrease of power saving. In simulation, we achieved 40-52% power saving and a considerable improvement in runtime, whereas an increase in wire length and area is less than 8%.

  • In this paper, we present a distributed algorithm for detecting dynamic event regions in wireless sensor network with the consideration on energy saving. Our model is that the sensing field is monitored by a large number of randomly distributed sensors with low-power battery and limited functionality, and that the event region is dynamic with motion or changing the shape. At any time that the event happens, we need some sensors awake to detect it and to wake up its k-hop neighbors to detect further events. Scheduling for the network to save the total power-cost or to maximize the monitoring time has been studied extensively. Our scheme is that some predetermined sensors, called critical sensors are awake all the time and when the event is detected by a critical sensor the sensor broadcasts to the neighbors to check their sensing area. Then the neighbors check their area and decide whether they wake up or remain in sleeping mode with certain criteria. Our algorithm uses only 2 bit of information in communication between sensors, thus the total communication cost is low, and the speed of detecting all event region is high. We adapt two kinds of measure for the wake-up decision. With suitable threshold values, our algorithm can be applied for many applications and for the trade-off between energy saving and the efficiency of event detection.

  • Recently, home energy management system (HEMS) for power consumption reduction has been widely used and studied. The HEMS performs electric power consumption control for the indoor electric device connected to the HEMS. However, a traditional HEMS is used for passive control method using some particular power saving devices. Disadvantages with this traditional HEMS is that these power saving devices should be newly installed to build HEMS environment instead of existing home appliances. Therefore, an HEMS, which performs with existing home appliances, is needed to prevent additional expenses due to the purchase of state-of-the-art devices. In this paper, an intelligent inference algorithm for EMS at home for non-power saving electronic equipment, called legacy devices, is proposed. The algorithm is based on the adaptive network fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and has a subsystem that notifies retraining schedule to the ANFIS to increase the inference performance. This paper discusses the overview and the architecture of the system, especially in terms of the retraining schedule. In addition, the comparison results show that the proposed algorithm is more accurate than the classic ANFIS-based EMS system.
