  • The bonding performance of two types of wood adhesives, namely phenol-resorcinol-formaldehyde (PRF) resin and melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin for glued laminated timber manufactured by high frequency (HF) heating was evaluated. The HF heating system consists of HF oscillator with dielectric heating system for curing adhesives, and hydraulic press system for clamping glued laminated timber. The designed frequency and output power of the HF system was as 5 MHz and 60 kW, respectively. To verify dielectric heating mechanism under HF oscillation, the heat loss factors of laminae and adhesives were measured. The results show that it is possible to selectively heat adhesives for their curing due to the remarkably higher loss factor of the adhesives than those of wood laminae. The temperature of adhesive in the bonding line reached up to the set temperature within a few seconds by high frequency oscillating, which advanced the curing of adhesive afterwards. The bonding performance, such as shear strength of bonding line, water soaking delamination, and boiling water soaking delamination of PRF resin met the requirement of Korean Standard (KS), however the MUF resin did not meet the KS requirement of boiling water soaking delamination. These results indicate that the HF heating system is successful to manufacture glued laminated timbers with PRF resins to meet the bonding requirements.

  • In this paper, we have designed and fabricated high conversion gain Q-band active sub-harmonic mixers for a receiver of millimeter wave wireless communication systems. The fabricated active sub-harmonic mixer uses 2nd harmonic signals of a low local oscillator (LO) frequency. The fabricated mixer was successfully integrated by using $0.1{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$GaAs pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistors (PHEMTs) and coplanar waveguide (CPW) structures. From the measurement, it shows that maximum conversion gain of 4.8 dB has obtained at a RF frequency of 40 GHz for 10 dBm LO power of 17.5 GHz. Conversion gain from the fabricated sub-harmonic mixer is one of the best reported thus far. And a phase noise of the 2nd harmonic was obtained -90.23 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset. The active sub-harmonic mixer also ensure a high degree of isolations, which are -35.8 dB from LO-to-IF and -40.5 dB from LO-to-RF, respectively, at a LO frequency of 17.5 GHz.

  • In this paper, a novel voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) has been presented by using the microstrip square multiple spiral resonator for reducing the phase noise of VCO. The microstrip multiple square resonator has the large coupling coefficient value, which makes a high Q value, and has reduced phase noise of VCO. The VCO with 1.8 V power supply has phase noise of -115.0~-117.34 dBc/Hz @100 kHz in the tuning range, 8.935~9.4 GHz. When it has been compared with microstrip square multiple spiral resonator and coventional spiral resonator, the reduced Q value has been -32.7 dB and -57.6 dB respectively. This low phase noise VCO could ve available to a VCO in X-band.

  • In this paper, the dual looped CMOS PLL with 3-250MHz input locking range at a single 13.3V is designed. This paper proposed a new PLL architecture with a current pumping algorithm to improve voltage-to-frequencylinearity of VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator). The designed VCO operates at a wide frequency range of75.8MHz-lGHz with a high linearity. Also, PFD(Phase frequency Detector) circuit preventing voltage fluctuation of the charge pump with loop filter circuit under the locked condition is designed. The simulation results of the PLL using 0.6 um N-well single poly triple metal CMOS technology illustrate a locking time of 3.5 us, a power dissipation of 92mW at 1GHz operating frequency with 125MHz of input frequency. Measured results show that the phase noise of VCO with V-I converter is -100.3dBc/Hz at a 100kHz offset frequency.

  • The performance of upstream transmission in SCM-PON is generally limited by the presence of OBI which is caused by the beating of two or more lasers. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for reducing OBI problem by using heterodyne detection with an additional LD as a local oscillator, resulting that the RF signal is shifted to the other spectal band. In addition, it is possible that the proposed method can provide the cost-effective solution thanks to the loop-back mechanism using R-SOA in ONUs. The performance is superior when the spectral width of LD is smaller and the power difference between the transmission LD and the oscillation LD is bigger. System configuration and design consideration are discussed. Performance of the systems is evaluated by simulator called OptSim. It is expected to provide WDM/SCM-PON system not only cost-effective but also efficient in increasing the number of subscribers.

  • This paper describes a phase-locked loop (PLL) that generates a 51-phase clock with the operating frequency of 125MHz. To generate 51-phase clock with a frequency of 125 MHz, the proposed PLL uses three voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) which are connected by resistors. Each VCO consists of 17 delay-cells. An resistor averaging scheme, which makes three VCOs to connect with each other, makes it possible to generates 51-phase clock of the same phase difference. The proposed PLL is designed by using 65 nm CMOS process with a 1.0 V supply. At the operating frequency of 125 MHz, the simulated DNL and peak-to-peak jitter are +0.0016/-0.0020 LSB and 1.07 ps, respectively. The area and power consumption of the implemented PLL are $290{\times}260{\mu}m^2$ and 2.5 mW, respectively.

  • This paper analyzes the effect of metal dummy structures in CMOS on antenna performances of a sub-terahertz on-chip microstrip patch antenna. A 400-GHz on-chip antenna is designed in a 45-nm CMOS process, and the resonance frequency and efficiency of the antenna are analyzed depending on the density of metal dummy structures. Antennas integrated with an oscillator are designed and fabricated for verification, and measurements are performed using quasi-optical methods with an FTIR and bolometer. The measurement results shows that the radiated power drops from 420 nW to 90 nW by 6.8 dB due to the dummy structures with the density of 27 %.

  • In this paper, a novel voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) using the microstrip square open loop split ring resonator (OLSRR) is presented for reducing the phase noise. For this purpose, the square-shaped split ring resonator (SRR) haying the form of the microstrip square open loop is investigated. Compared with the microstrip square open loop resonator, the microstrip square OLSRR has the larger coupling coefficient value, which makes a higher Q value, and has reduced the phase noise of VCO. The VCO with 1.7V power supply has the phase noise of $-120\sim-116.5$ dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the tuning range, $5.746\sim5.854$ GHz. The figure of merit (FOM) of this VCO is $-200.33\sim-197$ dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz in the same tuning range.
