  • The increasing application of power electronic equipment in industrial field has led to a growing concern for harmonic distortion and the resulting impacts on system equipment and operations. Harmonic currents are generated by the operation of nonlinear loads and equipment on the power system. These are more increased by unbalance voltage of electrical distribution power systems. This paper describes harmonics characteristics generated by varying of nonlinear load at the PCC under the voltage unbalance.

  • This paper investigates the stability and performance of model predictive controlled active-front-end (AFE) rectifiers for energy storage systems, which has been increasingly applied in power distribution sectors and in renewable energy sources to ensure an uninterruptable power supply. The model predictive control (MPC) algorithm utilizes the discrete behavior of power converters to determine appropriate switching states by defining a cost function. The stability of the MPC algorithm is analyzed with the discrete z-domain response and the nonlinear simulation model. The results confirms that the control method of the active-front-end (AFE) rectifier is stable, and that is operates with an infinite gain margin and a very fast dynamic response. Moreover, the performance of the MPC controlled AFE rectifier is verified with a 3.0 kW experimental system. This shows that the MPC controlled AFE rectifier operates with a unity power factor, an acceptable THD (4.0 %) level for the input current and a very low DC voltage ripple. Finally, an efficiency comparison is performed between the MPC and the VOC-based PWM controllers for AFE rectifiers. This comparison demonstrates the effectiveness of the MPC controller.

  • Transient in an electric distribution system are mainly generated by switching. This paper presents analysis of switching surge and means of limiting the voltage magnification transient for high voltage power systems by using the EDSA's EMTAP software package. One means of limiting the voltage magnification transient is to convert the end-user power factor contraction capacitor banks to harmonics filters. An inductance in series with the capacitor bank was used to decrease the transient voltage at the customer bus to acceptable levels. And also simulation results used the EDSA harmonics analysis program show the effect of harmonics reduction.

  • The DC circuit breaker is essential for supplying stable DC power with the advent of DC transmission/distribution and sensitive loads. Compared with mechanical circuit breakers, which must interrupt a very large fault current due to their slow breaking capability, a solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) can quickly break a fault current almost within 1 [ms]. Thus, it can reduce the damage of an accident a lot more than mechanical circuit breakers. However, previous DC SSCBs cannot perform the operating duty, and are not economical because many SCR are required. Therefore, this paper proposes a new DC SSCB suitable for DC grids. It has a low semiconductor conduction loss, quick reclosing and rebreaking capabilities. As a result, it can perform the operating duties of reclosing and rebreaking. The proposed DC SSCB is designed and implemented so that it is suitable for home dc distribution at a rated power of 5 [kW] and a voltage of 380 [V]. The operating characteristics are confirmed by simulation and experimental results. In addition, this paper suggests design guidelines so that it can be applied to other DC grids. It is anticipated that the proposed DC SSCB may be utilized to design and realize many DC grid systems.

  • Electric Vehicles(EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles(PHEVs) which have the grid connection capability, represent an important power system issue of charging demands. Analyzing impacts EVs charging demands of the power system such as increased peak demands, developed by means of modeling a stochastic distribution of charging and a demand dispatch calculation. Optimization processes proposed to determine optimal demand distribution portions so that charging costs and demand can possibly be managed. In order to solve the problems due to increasing charging demand at the peak time, alternative electricity rate such as Time-of-Use(TOU) rate has been in effect since last year. The TOU rate would in practice change the tendencies of charging time at the peak time. Nevertheless, since it focus only minimizing costs of charging from owners of the EVs, loads would be concentrated at times which have a lowest charging rate and would form a new peak load. The purpose of this paper is that to suggest a scenario of load leveling for a power system operator side. In case study results, the vehicles as regular load with time constraints, battery charging patterns and changed daily demand in the charging areas are investigated and optimization results are analyzed regarding cost and operation aspects by determining optimal demand distribution portions.

  • Purpose: Dual cylindrical microwave chambers equipped with an ohmic heating tube were designed and fabricated to maximize the electric field strength for expeditious heat treatment of particulate foods. Methods: The efficacy of the combination heater was investigated by simulating the electric field distribution by using COMSOL Multiphysics software. Results: All components of the designed microwave heating unit were suitable for transmitting maximal microwave power to the load. The simulated electric field distribution implied that single-mode microwave heating would be sufficient for the steady generation of a highly localized heating zone in the cavity. During impedance matching, the calculated reflection coefficient ($S_{11}$) was small, possibly implying minimal power loss and wave reflection in the designed microwave heating chamber. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the possibility of concentrating the microwave power at the centerline for a single-frequency microwave, for thermal treatment of multiphase foods without attenuating the microwave power.

  • In this paper, we proposes a method for assessing the effect of voltage sag in power distribution systems using fuzzy model. The proposed method is based on the reliability data of distribution system and specified computer business equipment manufacturer association(SCBEMA) curve that express the representative power acceptability curve by voltage sag for each customer type. The SCBEMA curves are made by using the CBEMA curves obtained from the experiment for the customers sensitive equipment. In order to transform SCBEMA curves to the differential damage by voltage sag, a fuzzy model is used. The proposed fuzzy model is composed to reflect two parameters of customers damage by voltage sag. One is the duration and magnitude of voltage sag and the other is the different risk due to the customer types. The Monte Carlo simulation method and the historical reliability data in KEPCO ae used for case studies.

  • In this paper, we developed a diagnosis device for ZnO arrester to detect on-line leakage current and acquire data from the power distribution system. The arrester is important power equipment used in power transmission and distribution systems to protect the generator and the main transformer from surge and overvoltage. First of all we developed a diagnosis device for ZnO arrester leakage current. And then we detect the total leakage current by the developed device without disconnecting the arrester ground wire and analysis the 3rd order harmonic by Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) to diagnose the ZnO arrester deterioration. With measuring the total current and the resistive current of power distribution system in operation, we analysis the trend of resistive current component in the total leakage current. We expect the result will be promote the method to protect electrical utility and customer from accident.

  • In this paper, we propose a new near-field reader antenna for 900 MHz RFID. The proposed antenna consists the micro-strip antenna with the periodic structure. The overall dimension of the antenna is $313mm{\times}152mm{\times}14mm$. The antenna has the uniform E-field distribution in near field region and the heart-shaped radiation beam pattern (Peak gain=-2 dBi). The transmitted power range is from 17 dBm to 23 dBm. We focus on minimizing the detected error by suppressing the reflected power from the metal, which is attached to the surface by tag, and by reducing the transmitted power from tag.
