Performance improvement of the high speed mobile communication by the predistorter (전치왜곡기로 인한 고속이동통신의 성능향상기법)

  • High power amplifier (HPA), which is used in transmitter of wireless communication systems, usually works in near saturation point in order to achieve maximum efficiency. In this region, HPA can introduce undesirable nonlinear effects. In this paper, we present a polynomial modeling method for efficient techniques to compensate for nonlinear distortion introduced by nonlinear HPA. Proposed polynomial predistorter inverses actual amplifier. Namely, we derive polynomials of amplifiers from analytical method and the electrical parameters in the data sheet of an actual amplifier and then can derive polynomial predistorter by inversing them. It is an effective and a simple method to compensate nonlinear distortion. SSPA(Solid-state power amplifier) is considered. We also analyze the effects of predistortion on the SER performance of communication system with 16-QAM modulation format. The results have shown the efficiency of this model.

  • We compare feedback wavelength-dependent performances of all-optical gain-clamped 980-nm pumped erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. In a 2.5-Gbps 8-channel WDM system, we have measured and compared gain compressions, signal power variations due to cross-saturation, power penalties caused by relaxation oscillations and noise figures for three different feedback wavelengths - 1532, 1543, and 1565 nm.

  • In this paper, we identify the memory effects of the RF high-power base station amplifiers with Vector Signal Analyzer (VSA). It is found that the model of power- amplifier using Tapped Delayed Neural - Networks with back-propagation algorithm shows very accurate modeling performance. Based on this behavioral modeling, we conducted inverse compensation process which also uses Neural Networks.

  • The pulse width modulated class D power amplifier has the highest efficiency among various class amplifiers but the performances, such as bandwidth, distortion and stability are inferior to the conventional ones. In this paper, a new class D amplifier design is Presented employing dual feedback loops namely current and voltage feedback. The new design provides wide full-power bandwidth and stability at any load with high efficiency.

A Low-Loss On-Chip Transformer Using an Auxiliary Primary Part (APP) for CMOS Power Amplifier Applications

  • We propose a low-loss on-chip transformer using an auxiliary primary part (APP) for an output matching network for fully integrated CMOS power amplifiers. The APP is designed using a fifth metal layer while the primary and secondary parts are designed using a sixth metal layer with a width smaller than that of the primary and secondary parts of the transformer to minimize the substrate loss and the parasitic capacitance between the primary and secondary parts. By adapting the APP in the on-chip transformer, we obtain an improved maximum available gain value without the need for any additional chip area. The feasibility of the proposed APP structure is successfully verified.

High Efficiency V-band Power Combining Modules Using Slotline-to-Microstrip Transition (슬롯라인-마이크로스트립 변환을 이용한 고효율 V-band 전력 결합 모듈)

  • Two high-efficiency and high power power-combing modules were developed using slotline-to-microstrip transition at V-band. Power-combining modules incorporating two MMIC power amplifiers demonstrated combining efficiencies higher than $80\%$(maximum $86\%$) with saturated output power of 22.96 dBm and 22.81 dBm, respectively. The measurement of back-to-back connected combiners demonstrated insertion loss less than 1.2 dB with return loss better than 15 dB around 60 GHz, respectively.

  • In this paper we have designed a two-stage Class I power amplifier operated at 2.4CHz for Class-1 Bluetooth application. The power amplifier employs class-I topology to exploit its soft-switching property for high efficiency. The latch-structured pre-amplifier with amplifiers makes its output signal as sharp as possible for soft switching of the next power amplifier. It improves the overall efficiency of the proposed power amplifier. It shows 65.8$\%$ PAE, 20dB power gain and 20dBm output power.

  • This paper proposes a resonance power-combining technique using CRLH-transmission line. The circuits using proposed technique consist of the parallel capacitances and transmission lines to satisfy matching conditions and to combine power of amplifiers. The CRLH(Composite Right/Lefi-Handed) transmission lines are used to reduce the circuit size. As a result, the power combining amplifier using proposed techniques is measured that a gain is equal and the output power is increased about 2.2 dB higher than the single amplifier. Also, a size of amplifier is 78.3 % smaller than the conventional amplifier using RH transmission line.

A Study on Improvement of Linearity and Efficiency Compensation in a Power Amplifier Using Asymmetical Doherty Structure (비대칭 Doherty 구조를 이용한 전력 증폭기의 선형성 개선과 효율 보상에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, a new design method of asymmetrical configuration of main amplifier and peaking amplifier using changed bias point is proposed for excellent linearity, instead of the conventional Doherty structure. We have utilized the uneven wilkinson power divider for the unequal power drive at the input network of amplifiers. And we proposed a compensating method of the decreasing efficiency due to improving linearity using 3-stage Doherty structures. From the simulation results of asymmetrical Dohertry power amplifier and asymmetrical 3-stage Doherty power amplifier with uneven power drive are implemented. From the implementation and measurement results of the each amplifier, IMD characteristics have -55 dBc as the good efficiency of 13% compensates the decreased entire efficiency due to the improving linearity characteristics.

  • Parametric array transducers are used for highly directional speaker in an air environments. Piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers for parametric array transducers need DC-biased voltage driving signals in order to get high-directional quality-sound features. The existing power amplifier such as class A amplifiers has low efficiency and require large volume heatsinks. To overcome the above-mentioned disadvantages of the conventional amplifier, this paper proposes a new power amplifier system. The proposed power amplifier system ensures high linearity of output characteristic by utilizing the push-pull class B type amplifier. Furthermore, the proposed power amplifier system gets high efficiency because it contains the DC-DC converter-type power supply which can perform energy recovery and envelope tracking function. Also the paper suggests the detailed circuit topology. Its characteristics are verified by the detailed experimental results.
