Postharvest diseases cause considerable losses to harvested fruits and vegetables worldwide. Fresh produce suspected of harboring postharvest disease must be treated to control any pathogens present. Although there are various treatments to control postharvest losses by pathogens, the current community is eager to take safer and more eco-friendly alternatives to help with human health and reduce environmental risks. Ionizing irradiation is a promising phytosanitary treatment that has a significant potential to control postharvest diseases in use worldwide. Although almost 19000 metric tons of sweet potatoes and various fruits are irradiated each year in six countries to control postharvest disease, irradiation continues to be a debate, with slow acceptance by industries. Irradiation alone is not effective as a fungicide, and an over dose affects the physical properties of irradiated products. A combination of irradiation with other treatments such as heating, biocontrol agents, chlorination, and nano Ag particles is to enhance their effectiveness. Challenges to the use of phytosanitary irradiation are an avoidance of irradiated postharvest and cost of the irradiation facilities, and thus consumers still need to be educated on the principles and benefits of irradiation and prepare an optimum economy of scale for commercial use. In this review, we evaluated the current phytosanitary irradiation, and combination with various other treatments to minimize the postharvest losses.
The production of Korean ginseng, one of the most important medicinal root crops, is limited by many factors including soil sickness, root rots in fields as well as during storage prior to consumption. Although much research has been conducted on the diseases in field condition, little information is available on the control of postharvest roots rots. To obtain better management strategy of postharvest root rots in ginseng, biological control using antagonistic bacteria was attempted. Of 208 bacteria obtained form suppressive soil samples, 4 were selected based on the inhibitory effect on mycelial growth of two major causal fungi for postharvest root rots in ginseng, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium solani. The culture filtrates of these bacterial antagonists greatly inhibited the conidial germination of both pathogenic fungi and produced abnormal morphology such as swollen germ tubes in F. solani and vacuolation of nongerminated conidia in B. cinerea. The population levels of bacterial antagonists on the ginseng roots were gradually increased up to 8 days of incubation. Postharvest root rots of ginseng caused by f. solani and B. cinerea were controlled in dipping tests in the ranges of 60∼80% by antagonistic Bacillus spp. obtained from suppressive soil. These results suggest that biological control using these antagonistic bacteria would be an alternative strategy to control postharvest root rots in ginseng.
This study was conducted to test the effect of chitosan, grape fruit seed extracts(GFSE) and sodium hypochloride gas on the control of mycotoxin producing pathogens occurred kin postharvest grains. Among the treatments, sodium hypochloride gas showed the highest control effect on wheat, soybean and corn see maintained in natural conditions after postharvest and GFSE had a little control effect, but chitosan treatment had no effect. Sodium hypochloride gas exhibited the strongest control effect on the major mycotoxin producing pathogens such as Penicillium spp. Aspergillus spp. and Fusarium spp., whereas GFSE had a little control effect. Sodium hypochloride gas appeared to be effective when the grains were treated with this gas more than 24 hours.
This study was conducted to determine the effects of storage conditions on apples treated with postharvest fungicides, benomyl and bitertanol. The fungicideds were applied to control Postharverst disease in apples during CA and cold storage. The stored Apple were tested monthly for weight loss, flesh firmness, titratable acidity, prix and free sugar. Relative to the control group, the pstharvest fungicide stoup had less disease. The fungicide treated apples stored in CA had a higher measured weight, better firmness and maintained acidity, prix and free sugar when compared to the control stoup monthly and after 200days. The fungicide treated apples in cold storage maintained their quality for 120days.
For the effective chemical control to minimize infection of storage pathogens on kiwifruit in the field, this study was conducted to screen alternative fungicides which could be substituted for the fungicides Benomyl WP and Thiophanate-methyl 제 registered for the control of postharvest fruit rats of kiwifruit in Korea. Among the 8 fungicides tested, Tebuconazole WP, Iprodione WP and Flusilazole WP showed higher inhibitory effects on themycelial growths of 3 major pathogens of postharvest fruit rots, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diaporthe actinidiae and Botrytis cinerea on potato dextrose agar. They also showed control efficiencies as high as those of Benomyl WP and Thiophanate-methyl WP on postharvest fruit rots in the field. They might be good candidates for fungicieds for the control of postharvest fruit rots of kiwifruit.

TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation was attempted to disinfect fungal pathogens causing postharvest spoilage of kiwifruits and to decompose fungicide residuals on kiwifruits. TiO$_2$Photocatalytic ozonation process synergistically degraded organic compound and inhibited conidial germination of the fungal pathogen compared to single treatment of ozonation or photocatalysis. The efficient control of fungal spoilage and degradation of residual fungicide on kiwifruits indicate that TiO$_2$photocatalytic ozonation is a very attractive method for postharvest disease control of kiwifruits as an alternative to fungicides application.

Preventive and curative activity of postharvest treatments with chitosan nanoparticles (CS) and chitosan biocomposites loaded with pepper tree essential oil (CS-PEO) against anthracnose were evaluated on Avocado (Persea americana) cv. Hass artificially inoculated in rind wounds. After 10 days of storage significant preventive and curative activity against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was observed with the absence of internal damage by applying CS and CS-PEO. Quality parameters like water losses and firmness changes were assessed on fruit treated. CS and CS-PEO were effective to reduce water losses and firmness losses.
In order to control postharvest spoilage of satsuma mandarin fruits, rhizobacteria were isolated from soil samples. The Pantoea agglomerans strain 59-4 (Pa 59-4) which suppresses the decay of mandarin fruit by green and blue mold, was tested for the control efficacy and its mode of action was investigated. Pa 59-4 inhibited infection by green and blue mold on wounded mandarins, which were artificially inoculated with a spore suspension of Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum with control efficacies of 85-90% and 75-80%, respectively. The biocontrol efficacy was increased by raising the concentration of cells to between $10^8$ and $10^9\;cfu/ml$, and pretreatment with the antagonist prevented subsequent infection by green mold. The population of Pa 59-4 was increased more than 10 fold during the 24 hr incubation at $20^{\circ}C$, indicating that colonization of the wound site might prevent the infection by green mold. Despite poor antifungal activity, the Pa 59-4 isolate completely inhibited the germination and growth of P. digitatum spores at $1{\times}10^8\;cfu/ml$. We argue that the control efficacy was mediated by nutrient competition. Overall, the effective rhizobacterium, Pa 59-4, was shown to be a promising biocontrol agent for the postharvest spoilage of mandarin fruits by green and blue mold.

Anthracnose of papaya fruit caused by the fungus Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is one of the most economically important postharvest diseases. Hot water immersion (HW) and calcium chloride (Ca) treatments have been used to control papaya postharvest diseases; however, the effect of the combination HW-Ca on the pathogen growth and the development of the disease in infected papaya fruit has been scarcely studied. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the HW-Ca treatment on the in vitro growth of C. gloesporioides conidia and the quality of infected papaya. In vitro, the HW-Ca treated conidia showed reduced mycelial growth and germination. In vivo, the HW-Ca treatment of infected papaya delayed for 5 days the onset of the anthracnose symptoms and improved the papaya postharvest quality. The combined treatment HW-Ca was better than any of the individual treatments to inhibit the in vitro development of C. gloeosporioides and to reduce the negative effects of papaya anthracnose.
For the distribution of fresh produce, the thermoelectric cooling system combined with thermo electric materials (TEM) and phase change material (PCM) was studied. The PCM used this study was produced by in-situ polymerization technology which referred microencapsulation of hydrocarbon (n-tetradecane and n-hexadecane). In this study, quality characteristics of bell peppers in thermoelectric cooling system combined with TEM and PCM were analyzed and control was placed in an EPS (expanded polystyrene) box. As a result of quality characteristics analysis, weight of bell peppers decreased and moisture content of bell peppers was 90.96~94.43% during storage. Vitamin C content of bell pepper decreased during storage and reduction ratio of control was higher than that of BPT-5 treatment(bell pepper in thermoelectric cooling system with PCM which is kept the temperature at $5^{\circ}C$). The result of color value, on 21 day, ${\Delta}E$ value of BPT-5 treatment was 5.05 while that of control was 41.8. On 21 day, total bacteria count of BPT-5 treated bell pepper shown less than that of control. In conclusion, it suggested that the thermoelectric cooling system combined with PCM improved quality of fresh produce during transportation and storage.
