  • A portable power supply system for soldiers must be able to supply electric energy corresponding to the power consumption of combat support troops, and have a carrying load in a range that does not impair the combatant's ability to execute operations. In particular, as the total required power of combat equipment increases with the advances in the future soldier system, a portable, lightweight power supply system with high efficiency is essential. A fuel cell has a high energy-to-weight density compared to lithium batteries, which are used mainly as a military power source system. Therefore, it is capable of miniaturization and lightweight, making active R&D to a portable power supply system. In this paper, the characteristics of the fuel cell applied as a portable power supply system, and the R&D trends of domestic and foreign military portable fuel cell systems were investigated. The current status of domestic technology compared to the level of foreign development was analyzed. In addition, future technology development plans are presented based on the consideration factors when developing a portable fuel cell (power supply stability, portability, and cost reduction) so that it can be used when establishing a plan on the development of a portable fuel cell system for the future soldier system.

  • Portable multimedia Player (PMP) devices have been gaining in its popularity with the emerging digital convergence of data, video, audio, etc. Since the PMP devices are typically equipped with DSP, a bigger LCD screen, and a hard disk, efficient power management has become more crucial than the other portable devices. This paper builds up a hardware/software-based power measurement system based on data acquisition devices. Subsequently, it measures and analyzes the power consumed in commercial PMP devices under different types of events: the system boot & shutdown, video playback, and the use of different video-coding types. Finally, our analysis of the measured power consumption patterns reveals useful information for the design of low-power PMP devices.

  • The aim of this study was to develop a portable electronic nose system for freshness measurement of meats, which could be an alterative of subjective measurements of human nose and time-consuming measurements of conventional gas chromatograph methods. The portable electronic system was o optimized by comparing the measurement sensitivity and hardware efficiency, such as power consumption and dimension reduction throughout two stages of the prototypes. The electronic nose systems were constructed using an array of four different metal oxide semiconductor sensors. Two different configurations of sensor array with dimension were designed and compared the performance respectively. The final prototype of the system showed much improved performance on saving power consumption and dimension reduction without decrease of measurement sensitivity of pork freshness. The results show the potential of constructing a portable electronic system for the measurement of meat quality with high sensitivity and energy efficiency.

  • The 4kW class inverter for portable ESS designed through this study achieves lightweight and high power density by reducing the volume of passive devices (capacitors, inductors, etc.) suitable for portable use, and minimizes heat loss of the MOSFET through the low on resistance of the MOSFET. So that high efficiency can be achieved. In addition, in order to deliver high quality energy, it is designed to have a low THDV in accordance with the current KEPCO business handling guidelines, and is designed to output a sine wave with low distortion.

  • Using a small mobile wireless network as a supplement to the disaster safety network can be useful for eliminating small radio shadowing areas, reducing traffic overloads in disaster areas, and quickly building a disaster communication network in difficult access areas. Potable base station is needed to build a small mobile wireless network, and the portable base station using TVWS(TV White Space) is effective in terms of utilization of radio frequency resources and construction cost of wireless networks. In this paper, we design and implement a power amplifier for portable base station operating in TVWS. The implemented power amplifier operates at 470 ~ 698MHz. The gain of the implemented amplifier is more than 20.1dB, the input/output return loss is more than 11.4dB, and the isolation is more than 39.9dB when the output is off. The IMD characteristic of the power amplifier has characteristics of 61.0dBc with 18.8dBm output at 470MHz, 59.3dBc wih 18.6dBm output at 550MHz and 56.5dBc with 19.0dBm output at 690MHz. The power amplifier implemented in this paper can be used as a power amplifier for portable base station.

  • The most important design factor for portable devices is power consumption. In this paper, in the early design stage of a mobile device which measures temperature and humidity a power consumption model will be proposed and then the overall power consumption will be estimated based on this model. We will verify previously the correctness of such estimated power consumption before implementation of the real device. That is our proposed design methodology based on power consumption model. An improved design method for efficiently reducing the current consumption in the idle mode is also presented. By implementing a real prototype of the mobile device for measuring temperature and humidity, the correctness of our proposed design methodology based on power consumption modeling will be verified.

  • This paper evaluates the impacts for interference from UWB system, and determines the tolerable UWB power spectral density(PSD) to the new deploying system, which is called a portable internet service in Korea. It also proposes the interference analysis scheme that can evaluate the characteristics of the performance degradation for portable internet service according to the emission power of UWB systems at the specified frequency bands. The proposed scheme includes a multi-rate and data service environments to deal with interference to portable internet service. It is obtained from simulation results that the transmission PSD of UWB systems should be rigidly restricted by less approximately 10 ${\~}$ 20 dB than FCC provisional limit for coexistence between UWB and portable internet service already allocated at 2.3 GHz frequency bands in Korea.
