A Study on the Busan Port Selection Factor Changes of Shipping Companies in the Post-Corona Era (포스트 코로나 시대 선사들의 부산항 선택요인 변화분석)

  • The industry trends of major global shipping and ports in the world are changing rapidly because of the spread of COVID-19, resulting in the reorganization of GVCs by global companies, and strengthening of environmental regulations by IMO. Based on these environmental changes, Busan Port was ranked 5th in the global container port rankings in 2013. However, since the outbreak of COVID-19, Busan Port's global container port ranking in 2020 fell to 7th, behind Qingdao Port. In the post-Corona era, for Busan Port to compete with global container ports and gain a competitive edge in the port, it is necessary to accurately identify the competitive factors of Busan Port and establish a comprehensive policy. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze how the competitive factors of Busan Port have changed in the selection of ports by current global shipping companies, compared to the first study conducted in 2005. Additionally, a comprehensive policy plan was established by identifying factors impacting the frequency of future calls as well as the growth potential of Busan Port, through a stepwise multiple regression analysis. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the call preference and growth potential of Busan Port in the post-Corona era are most affected by 'port facilities'. And it was found that the calls frequency in the future is most impacted by 'the geopolitical location' factor.

  • The composition of water-friendly space in the port and harbour developments provides the accessibility to the sea and thus resting & recreational function of the local citizen, which should be treated importantly for the eco-friendly coastal development. However, the high demand on water-friendly space can induce another environmental problem because most port and harbour developments require marine reclamation and the water-friendly space are made up on the reclamation area. The present study analysed the problems and suggested matters to be considered in composing the water-friendly space of port and harbour developments. The study also established the management direction by site characteristics of port and harbour. In addition, we attempt to find a plan to avoid the water-friendly space composition with environmental damage and to secure the environmental and public soundness in site selection, land use and facilities plan based on case studies.

Site Selection using Port and Industry Clusters (제조산업의 항만클러스터 입지선정 모형에 관한 연구 - 수도권을 중심으로 -)

  • This paper aims to clarify if clustering effects among industries exist and if port-industry clustering effects exist. A knock-down approach was used in a survey and 16 industries were categorized. We defined which industry is more competitive in industry clusters and port-industry clusters. Another survey to experts was carried out to identify which industry is more appropriate to one of the three ports in Sudokwon (Seoul Metropolitan Areas): Incheon port, Pyungtaik port and Dangjin port. Five manufacturing industries are selected considering port-industry clustering relationships in this area and Analytic Hierarch Process was used for a pairwise comparison. Locational, social and economic factors are selected for 1st level. A result shows that Incheon port is more competitive in petroleum manufacturing, primary metal manufacturing and rubber and plastic manufacturing and Pyeontaik port is more competitive in metal assembly manufacturing and automobile and trailer manufacturing. However, sensitivity analysis shows a turnover of ranking in some industries. As there exist slight differences among three ports, cooperation is necessary when the government and Port Authorities make plans.

A Research on the Factors for Selecting Pyeongtaek Port for Importation of Cars (수입자동차의 평택항 선택 결정 요인에 관한 분석)

  • Pyeongtaek Port is becoming a specialized for importing or exporting cars. In 2010, Pyeongtaek Port became the major port, out of the 31 ports in Korea, for import and export of cars. Usage of this port was especially high for imported cars. In 2011, more than 1 million cars are expected to be imported or exported via Pyeongtaek Port. This research analyses the factors for selecting Pyeongtaek Port for imported cars and recommendations required to improve Pyeongtaek Port. To do this, questionnaires were given to 14 imported car companies that currently, July 2011, use Pyeongtaek Port and used AHP criteria to asses the importances of each factors. According to this research, the most important determinant for the use of Pyeongtaek Port is 'Port Location' followed by 'Port Cost', 'Port Facility', 'Port Service', 'Port Marketing' and 'Port Cargo Volume', in the order of importance. Also, imported car companies say that the factor in need for the most urgent improvement is 'Port Facilities' in Pyeongtaek Port.

  • The aim of this study is to establish a detailed strategic countermeasure for Korean west coast ports(Pyeongtaek Dangjin Port, Incheon Port, and Gwangyang Port) to be developed into core ports in the Pan-Yellow Sea area as the results such as strategic partnership ports analysis through the container volume analysis in Korean ports are comprehensively taken into account between west coast ports and other major ports in the Pan-Yellow Sea area. This study utilized related data which import and export data by Office of Customs Administration and SPIDC by Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries for analyzing container volume between two ports. Strategic partnership ports were selected based on in-depth analysis on 5 standards such as container volume in 2012, increase rate of trading, occupancy rate, variance rate, and contribution of container volume. As a result of selection strategic partnership port in Pan-Yellow Sea area, Lianyungang, Tianjin, Yantai, Qingdao, Dalian port in Pyeongtaek Dangjin Port, Shidao, Weihai, Qingdao, Tianjin, Dalian port in Incheon, Qingdao, Yantai, Dalian, Lianyungang port in Gwangyang port. Also this study proposed implications of countermeasure to establish strategic partnership ports for each of west coast ports.

The Estimating of Port Preference according to Customer′s Segmentation (고객 세분화에 따른 항만 선호도 비교분석)

  • In this paper, we estimate the difference of port preference and attributed importance by diving subjects of the survey into internal and external shipping companies considered as the main customers of port. From the results of conjoint analysis, it is found that there are differences in preference between domestic shipping companies and foreign ones. The difference in port preference shows; foreign shipping companies mark Shanghai port in the first place in the preference of transshipment port, while domestic shipping companies prefer Busan port. Similar results are applied to preference of rolling port. The result of the survey means it is necessary to group shipping company, when port is analyzed, because the port preference is subject to wether internal or external shipping companies. Also, it implies target marketing strategies should continuously be needed in order to maintain Busan port's preference gaining advantage over other ports and major target would be shipping companies.

  • Future of Busan New Port may depend even on the efficient use of the port hinterland. Accordingly, selection of which industry according to which standard in the port hinterland is another task. In order to solve this problem, it analyzed the structure in international division of labor with China and Japan, which are possessing considerable portion in the trading volume with our country, and the export-import structure of Busan Port against China and Japan, by using RCA index and GL index as well as export-import results. In addition to this, the proper industry was selected on the basis of 10 strategic industries for development in Busan. According to the analytical results, the industries, which will be induced in the hinterland of Busan New Port, include textile clothing, pulp printing matter, jewelry, basic metal nonmetallic product, machine lectric product, automobile, shipbuilding, optics accurate machinery medical treatment musical instrument, nano material, fuel battery, aerospace and intelligent robot.

  • Incheon Port urgently requires designation of a free trade zone to pursue development linked with the port hinterland while promoting continuous growth of the port. This study aims to evaluate the optimal location and derive policy implications for the designation of a free trade zone and analyzed factors property divided by groups. This study used the Consistent Fuzzy Preference Relation (CFPR) analysis technique to derive a practical construction direction by quantifying and evaluating linguistic measures. As a result, the Incheon New Port hinterland showed the highest location competitiveness among the four candidate areas of Incheon New Port hinterland, Aam Logistics Complex 2, North Port hinterland, and Gyeongin Port hinterland. Among the eight evaluation factors consisting of qualitative and quantitative factors, the Incheon New Port hinterland ranked no. 1 in all the four qualitative factors and one quantitative factor and received the highest total score. Also, Group 1 presented 'possibility to attract tenant companies' as first. Group 2 was 'complex size' and Group 3 was also 'possibility to attract tenant companies'. This study has the implication for suggesting the factors and evaluation structure of Free Trade Zone. Future research requires detailed empirical studies, such as expanding the subject of study or selecting factors that reflect the interests of each group.

  • The systematic criteria and rational standard for site selection of marine recreational floating architecture are in urgently need in respect of structural safety, use of facilities, economics of construction and management, relationship with surrounding areas or cities and impact on marine environment. Nevertheless, at present, there is not any study nor guideline for site selection of marine recreational floating architecture which is now being planned and elected at many places of a body of water such as river or coastal area all over the country. Therefore this study is to propose a systematic process and a rational criteria and guideline for site selection of marine recreational floating architecture. Especially the results are suggested in forms of diagrams and tables in order to be utilized so easily by related local governments and individual enterprises.
