The microstructure of copper films prepared by a sputtering apparatus, which was fabricated to enhance the shadowing effect, was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. Black copper films were deposited on copper wires at an Ar pressure of 10 Pa. The black films had an extremely porous structure composed of separated columns. This structure is quite similar to that of black titanium films prepared by cylindrical magnetron sputtering. These results suggest that the porous structure composed of separated columns is easily formed for metal films by enhancing the shadowing effect.
Polystyrene thin films containing Bragg structures have been successfully obtained by the removal of DBR porous silicon films from the DBR structured porous silicon/polystyrene composite film in HF/$H_2O$ mixture solution and by replicating the nano-structures of porous silicon containing Bragg structure. Polystyrene thin films containing Bragg structures displayed unique optical reflection resonances in optical reflection spectrum. This optical reflection band was resulted from the interference of reflection wavelength at Bragg structure of polystyrene thin films. The wavelength of reflection resonances could be modified by the change of Bragg structure of the master. Polystyrene thin films containing Bragg structures were flexible and maintained their optical characteristics upon bending. The Polystyrene thin films replicate the photonic features and the nanostructure of the master.

Two approaches for the fabrication of tailored powder composites with specially distributed pore-grain structure and chemical composition are investigated. Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) followed by microwave sintering is employed to obtain functionally graded materials (FGM) by in-situ controlling the deposition bath suspension composition. $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ and zeolite FGM are successfully synthesized using this technique. In order to fabricate an aligned porous structure, unidirectional freezing followed by freeze drying and sintering is employed. By controlling the temperature gradient during freezing of powder slurry, a unidirectional ice-ceramic structure is obtained. The frozen specimen is then subjected to freeze drying to sublimate the ice. The obtained capillary-porous ceramic specimen is consolidated by sintering. The sintering of the graded structure is modeled by the continuum theory of sintering.
The porous pellets were prepared from porphyry by slurry foaming method. The effect of sintering temperatures on pore structure of porous porphyry pellets with different extension ratio ($E_R$) was investigated by specific surface area, water absorption and porosity, which changed with sintering temperatures. When the sintering temperatures increased from $975^{\circ}C$ to $1075^{\circ}C$, specific surface area and water absorption of the all samples decreased. In case of the sample with an equal sintering temperature, $E_R=3.0$ pellets had little influence on pore structure compared to the $E_R=2.0$ pellets. As a results, it was shown by SEM that facilitated formation of micro pores at $E_R=2.0$ pellets shrunk increasingly after sintering process. At $E_R=3.0$ and sintering temperature at $1025^{\circ}C$, optimum conditions of the porous porphyry porous pellets was found. Also, Escherichia coli removal efficiency of the silver-containing porphoyry porous pellets was measured for the feasibility as a antibacterial media. The antibacterial activity of prepared silver-containing sample was maintained above 90% for 40 days.
Well defined 1-dimentional (1-D) photonic crystals of polystyrene replicas have been successfully obtained by removing the porous silicon from the free-standing rugate porous silicon/phenylmethylpolysiloxane composite film. Rugate porous silicon was prepared by an electrochemical etching of silicon wafer in HF/ethanol mixture solution. Exfoliated rugate porous silicon was obtained by an electropolishing condition. A composite of rugate porous silicon/phenylmethylpolysiloxane composite film was prepared by casting a toluene solution of phenylmethylpolysiloxane onto the top of rugate porous silicon film. After the removal of the template by chemical dissolution, the phenylmethylpolysiloxane castings replicate the photonic features and the nanostructure of the master. The photonic phenylmethylpolysiloxane replicas are robust and flexible in ambient condition and exhibit an excellent reflectivity in their reflective spectra. The photonic band gaps of replicas are narrower than that of typical semiconductor quantum dots.
Premixed combustion within porous ceramic media is numerically studied to understand burning characteristics and to find best configurations for burner implementations. Among many parameters, critical to burner performance, flame location and extinction coefficient are selected as major parameters for this study. The flame structure and burner performance with respect to these two parameters are observed. In the study, it is found that the location of flame is the most important in porous burner operation since it affects the rate of heat transfer and flame structure. Stability of the flame within the porous ceramic burner is discussed with respect to the flame location. It is found that to obtain high radiative output, the flame should be located downstream section of the burner. But the flame is to be unstable at most of downstream section except near the exit plane. To overcome this problem, new porous ceramic burner, using different ceramic properties in one burner instead of single property ceramic, is made and tested. With a combination of ceramics of high extinction coefficient at upstream and another material of low extinction coefficient at downstream of the burner, the flame can be stabilized at wider region of the burner with higher radiative output compared to the original burner configuration.

Falling film heat transfer has been widely used in many applications in which heat and mass transfer occur simultaneously, such as evaporative coolers, cooling towers, absorption chillers, etc. In such cases, it is desirable that the falling film spreads widely on the surface forming thin liquid film to enlarge contact surface and to reduce the thermal resistance across the film and/or the flow resistance to the vapor stream over the film. In this work, the surface is treated to have thin porous layer on the surface. With this treatment, the liquid can be spread widely on the surface by the capillary force resulting from the porous structure. In addition to this, the liquid can be held within the porous structure to improve surface wettedness regardless of the surface inclination. The experiment on the evaporative cooling of an inclined surface has been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the surface treatment. It is measured that the evaporative heat transfer increases about $50\%$ by the porous layer treatment as compared with that from orignal bare surfaces.

General criteria for the quality of porous concrete have not been established yet in Korea. And yet, pavement and construction have been performed. In this paper, guidelines on the construction site quality control of porous concrete were developed in order to establish criteria for resolving the issues and problems of porous concrete, to establish methods for improving poor performance, and to manage porous concrete more systematically. In addition, a guide for the construction site quality control of porous concrete, which was appropriate for reality, was developed by researching several quality control guides and maintenance at construction sites. The guide consists of a total of nine chapters such as Application Range, Overview, the Structure of Porous Concrete, the Design of Package Thickness, Package Materials for Porous Concrete, Construction Methods, Quality Assurance and Inspections, Construction Site Quality Control, and Maintenance. It describes quality control guidelines in all steps such as methods for transporting porous concrete from the factory to the construction site, cautions for construction work at construction sites, maintenance, and management. The Guide for the Construction Site Quality Control of Porous Concrete is expected to ensure the quality of porous concrete, to reduce national costs for quality assurance, and to help ensure the health and safety of Korean people.

A nickel mesh and an expanded nickel sheet were used as a current collector for supporting active materials of cathode in rechargeable batteries, while a porous nickel substrate was extensively studied because of its 3-dimensional structure which has high capabilities for active materials and current collection. Optimum coating conditions were studied by SEM and two step d. c. constant current electrolysis for the graphite coating and electro-plated nickel on an urethane substance which was highly porous and 3-dimensional structure. The density and the porosity of nickel support obtained by using two step current density and 80 ppi urethane substance were 0.38∼0.40 g /㎤ and 94∼96%, respectively. It was possible to fabricate a highly porous and good packable nickel substrate using two step current density and surfactants at sulfamic acid nickel plating bath.
Cordierite ceramic was prepared by sol-gel method. It was analyzed by Infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction patterns that the ceramic was chemically mixed in molecular level and transformed to $\alpha$-cordierite at 125$0^{\circ}C$. Water vapour treatments for aging and drying process were conducted to get porous cordierite with thermally stable pore structure. It resulted in 220-410 $m^2$/g BET surface area and mesoporous structure with mean pore diameter, 40$\AA$. Compared to naturally dried ceramic, the ceramic showed superior thermal stability of surface area up to $700^{\circ}C$. Surfaces of porous cordierite ceramics were observed by SEM.
