High speed machining(HSM) technique is widely used in the appliance, automobile part and mold industries, because it has many advantages such as good quality, low cost and rapid machining time. But it also has problems such as tool breakage, smooth tool path, and so on. In particular, small size end mill is easy to break, so it must be changed before interrupting operation. Generally, the tool life of small size end mill is affected by the milling conditions whose selected parameters are spindle speed, feedrate, and width of cut. The experiments were carried out by full factorial design of experiments using an orthogonal array. This paper shows optimal combination and mathematical model for tool life, Therefore, the analysis of variance(ANOVA) is employed to analyze the main effects and the interactions of these milling parameters and the second-order polynomial regression model with three independent variables is estimated to predict tool life by multiple regression analysis.
Aluminum alloy is one of light weight material and it is used to make LNG tank and ship. However, in order to weld aluminum alloy high density heat source is needed. In this paper, I-butt welding of Al 5083 with 6mm thickness using Plasma-MIG welding was carried out. The experiment was performed to investigate the influence of plasma-MIG welding parameters such as plasma current, wire feeding rate, MIG-welding voltage and welding speed on the tensile strength of weld. In addition we suggested 3 strength estimation models which are second order polynomial regression model, multiple nonlinear regression model and neural network model. The estimation performance of 3 models was evaluated in terms of average error rate (AER) and their values were 0.125, 0.238, and 0.021 respectively. Neural network model which has training concept and reflects non -linearity was best estimation performance.
Soil respiration ($R_S$) is a critical component of the annual carbon balance of forests, but few studies thus far have attempted to evaluate empirical regression models in $R_S$. The principal objectives of this study were to evaluate the relationship between $R_S$ rates and soil temperature (ST) and soil water content (SWC) in soil from a cool-temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest, and to evaluate empirical regression models for the prediction of $R_S$ using ST and SWC. We have been measuring $R_S$, using an open-flow gas-exchange system with an infrared gas analyzer during the snowfree season from 1999 to 2001 at the Takayama Forest, Japan. To evaluate the empirical regression models used for the prediction of $R_S$, we compared a simple exponential regression (flux = $ae^{bt}$Eq. [1]) and two polynomial multiple-regression models (flux = $ae^{bt}{\times}({\theta}{\nu}-c){\times}(d-{\theta}{\nu})^f:$ Eq. [2] and flux = $ae^{bt}{\times}(1-(1-({\theta}{\nu}/c))^2)$: Eq. [3]) that included two variables (ST: t and SWC: ${\theta}{\nu}$) and that utilized hourly data for $R_S$. In general, daily mean $R_S$ rates were positively well-correlated with ST, but no significant correlations were observed with any significant frequency between the ST and $R_S$ rates on periods of a day based on the hourly $R_S$ data. Eq. (2) has many more site-specific parameters than Eq. (3) and resulted in some significant underestimation. The empirical regression, Eq. (3) was best explained by temporal variations, as it provided a more unbiased fit to the data compared to Eq. (2). The Eq. (3) (ST $\times$ SWC function) also increased the predictive ability as compared to Eq. (1) (only ST exponential function), increasing the $R^2$ from 0.71 to 0.78.

This paper concerns the use of support vector regression (SVR), which is based on the kernel method for learning from examples, in identification of walking robots. To handle complex dynamics in humanoid robot and realize stable walking, this paper develops and implements two types of reference natural motions for a humanoid, namely, walking trajectories on a flat floor and on an ascending slope. Next, SVR is applied to model stable walking motions by considering these actual motions. Three kinds of kernels, namely, linear, polynomial, and radial basis function (RBF), are considered, and the results from these kernels are compared and evaluated. The results show that the SVR approach works well, and SVR with the RBF kernel function provides the best performance. Plus, it can be effectively applied to model and control a practical biped walking robot.

The size of head capsule is one of the most important factors for identifying developmental stage. In order to understand the developmental characteristics of the butterfly Atrophaneura alcinous, we examined fluctuations in larval head capsule size under three different temperature conditions (20, 25, and $30^{\circ}C$) and 60% humidity. As a result, larvae developed to the fifth instar at all three temperatures. The head capsule size of larvae tended to be larger at the lowest temperature and smaller at the highest temperature. The development rate showed a regular change, consistent with Dyar's rule regarding head capsule size development. Furthermore, the development of head capsule size was found to correspond to a second degree polynomial regression better than to a linear regression. On the basis of these results, it would appear to be possible to perform an accurate assessment of instar status during the development of A. alcinous.

In the case that the regression function has a discontinuity point in generalized linear model, Huh (2009) estimated the location and jump size using the log-likelihood weighted the one-sided kernel function. In this paper, we consider estimation of the unknown number of the discontinuity points in the regression function. The proposed algorithm is based on testing of the existence of a discontinuity point coming from the asymptotic distribution of the estimated jump size described in Huh (2009). The finite sample performance is illustrated by simulated example.
Laser welding is suitable for welding to the aluminum alloy sheet. In order to apply the aluminum laser welding to production line, parameters should be optimized. In this study, the optimal welding condition was searched through the genetic algorithm in laser welding of AA5182 sheet with AA5356 filler wire. Second-order polynomial regression model to estimate the tensile strength model was developed using the laser power, welding speed and wire feed rate. Fitness function for showing the performance index was defined using the tensile strength, wire feed rate and welding speed which represent the weldability, product cost and productivity, respectively. The genetic algorithm searched the optimal welding condition that the wire feed rate was 2.7 m/min, the laser power was 4 kW and the welding speed was 7.95 m/min. At this welding condition, fitness function value was 137.1 and the estimated tensile strength was 282.2 $N/mm^2$.
The effects of fly ash and superplasticizer (SP) on workability of concrete are quite difficult to predict because they are dependent on other concrete ingredients. Because of high complexity of the relations between workability and concrete compositions, conventional regression analysis could be not sufficient to build an accurate model. In this study, a workability model has been built using artificial neural networks (ANN). In this model, the workability is a function of the content of all concrete ingredients, including cement, fly ash, blast furnace slag, water, superplasticizer, coarse aggregate, and fine aggregate. The effects of water/binder ratio (w/b), fly ash-binder ratio (fa/b), superplasticizer-binder ratio (SP/b), and water content on slump were explored by the trained ANN. This study led to the following conclusions: (1) ANN can build a more accurate workability model than polynomial regression. (2) Although the water content and SP/b were kept constant, a change in w/b and fa/b had a distinct effect on the workability properties. (3) An increasing content of fly ash decreased the workability, while raised the slump upper limit that can be obtained.
In this study, plasma etching process was modeled by using support vector machine (SVM). The data used in modeling were collected from the etching of silica thin films in inductively coupled plasma. For training and testing neural network, 9 and 6 experiments were used respectively. The performance of SVM was evaluated as a function of kernel type and function type. For the kernel type, Epsilon-SVR and Nu-SVR were included. For the function type, linear, polynomial, and radial basis function (RBF) were included. The performance of SVM was optimized first in terms of kernel type, then as a function of function type. Five film characteristics were modeled by using SVM and the optimized models were compared to statistical regression models. The comparison revealed that statistical regression models yielded better predictions than SVM.

Whether to use linear or quadratic model in the analysis of regression data is one of the important problems in classical regression model and measurement error model (MEM). In MEM, four goodness of fit test statistics are available In solving that problem. Two are from the derivation of estimators of quadratic MEM, and one is from that of the general $k^{th}$-order polynomial MEM. The fourth one is derived as a variation of goodness of fit test statistic used in linear MEM. The purpose of this paper is to find the most powerful test statistic among them through the small-scale simulation.
