1-D Photonic Crystals Based on Bragg Structure for Sensing and Drug Delivery Applications

  • Free-standing multilayer distributed Bragg reflectors (DBR) porous silicon dielectric mirrors, prepared by electrochemical etching of crystalline silicon using square wave currents are treated with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) to produce flexible, stable composite materials in which the porous silicon matrix is covered with caffeine-impregnated PMMA. Optically encoded free-standing DBR PSi dielectric mirrors retain the optical reflectivity. Optical characteristics of free-standing DBR PSi dielectric mirrors are stable and robust for 24 hrs in a pH 12 aqueous buffer solution. The appearance of caffeine and change of DBR peak were simultaneously measured by UV-vis spectrometer and Ocean optics 2000 spectrometer, respectively.

Pullout Strength after Expandable Polymethylmethacrylate Transpedicular Screw Augmentation for Pedicle Screw Loosening

  • Objective : Pedicle screw fixation for spine arthrodesis is a useful procedure for the treatment of spinal disorders. However, instrument failure often occurs, and pedicle screw loosening is the initial step of a range of complications. The authors recently used a modified transpedicular polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) screw augmentation technique to overcome pedicle screw loosening. Here, they report on the laboratory testing of pedicle screws inserted using this modified technique. Methods : To evaluate pullout strengths three cadaveric spinal columns were used. Three pedicle screw insertion methods were utilized to compare pullout strength; the three methods used were; control (C), traditional transpedicular PMMA augmentation technique (T), and the modified transpedicular augmentation technique (M). After control screws had been pulled out, loosening with instrument was made. Screw augmentations were executed and screw pullout strength was rechecked. Results : Pedicle screws augmented using the modified technique for pedicle screw loosening had higher pullout strengths than the control ($1106.2{\pm}458.0N$ vs. $741.2{\pm}269.5N$; p=0.001). Traditional transpedicular augmentation achieved a mean pullout strength similar to that of the control group ($657.5{\pm}172.3N$ vs. $724.5{\pm}234.4N$; p=0.537). The modified technique had higher strength than the traditional PMMA augmentation technique ($1070.8{\pm}358.6N$ vs. $652.2{\pm}185.5N$; p=0.023). Conclusion : The modified PMMA transpedicular screw augmentation technique is a straightforward, effective surgical procedure for treating pedicle screw loosening, and exhibits greater pullout strength than traditional PMMA transpedicular augmentation. However, long-term clinical evaluation is required.

  • In the first step of the LIGA process a resist layer, typically PMMA(polymethylmethacrylate), is pattered by deep X-ray lithography. Then the exposed parts are dissolved by an organic developer. To describe the developer. To describe the development course the parameters influencing the development process was investigated. The developed depth is proportional to the square root of the development time which suggests that the development rate increases with increasing dose value and temperature. So the development course can be described by a phenomenological equation.

A Study on Thermal and Mechanical Interfacial Properties of Difunctional Epoxy/PMMA Blends (이관능성 에폭시/폴리메틸메타크릴레이트 블랜드의 열적 및 기계적 계면 특성)

  • In this work, the blend system prepared from epoky(DGEBA)/polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) was investigated in thermal and mechanical interfacial property measurements. The thermal properties were carried out by DSC, DMA, and TGA measurements. Also, the surface free energy and fracture toughness were determined by contact angle and critical stress intensity factor($K_{IC}$), respectively. And the fracture surface was observed by SEM after $K_{IC}$ tests. As experimental results, the curing temperature and glass transition temperature were slightly increased in addition of PMMA. Surface free energy of the blends showed an improved value at low contents of PMMA which could be attributed to the both increasings of London dispersive and polar components. From measurement of $K_{IC}$ of the blends, the highest value was found at 5 phr. This was due to the increasing of compatibility or physical interaction in macromolecular chains between DGEBA and PMMA of the blends.

  • The nanoindenter and AFM have been used for nanofabrication, such as nanolithography, nanowriting, and nanopatterning, as well as measurement of mechanical properties and surface topology. Nanoscale indents can be used as cells for molecular electronics and drug delivery, slots for integration into nanodevices, and defects for tailoring the structure and properties. Therefore, it is very important to make indents of desired morphology (shape, size and depth). Indents of different shapes can be obtained by using indenters of different geometries such as a cube comer and conical and spherical tips. The depth and size of indents can be controlled by making indentations at different indentation loads. However, in case of viscoplastic viscoelastic materials such as polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) the time dependent deformation (TDD) should also be considered. In this study, the effect of process parameters such as loading rate and hold-time at peak load on the indent morphology (maximum penetration depth, elastic recovery, transient creep recovery, residual depth pile-up height) of PMMA were studied for hyperfine pattern fabrication.

A Case of Pedicle Screw Loosening Treated by Modified Transpedicular Screw Augmentation with Polymethylmethacrylate

  • We report a case of pedicle screw loosening treated by modified transpedicular screw augmentation technique using polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), which used the anchoring effect of hardened PMMA. A 56-year-old man who had an L3/4/5 fusion operation 3 years ago complained of continuous low back pain after this operation. The computerized tomography showed a radiolucent halo around the pedicle screw at L5. We augmented the L5 pedicle screw with modified pedicle screw augmentation technique using PMMA and performed an L3/4/5 pedicle screw fixation without hook or operation field extension. This modified technique is a kind of transpedicular stiffness augmentation using PMMA for the dead space around the loosed screw. After filling the dead space with 1-2 cc of PMMA, we inserted a small screw. Once the PMMA hardened, we removed the small screw and inserted a thicker screw along the existing screw threading to improve the pedicle screws' pullout strength. At 10 months' follow-up, x-ray showed strong fusion of L3/4/5. The visual analogue scale (VAS) of his back pain was improved from 9 to 5. This modified transpedicular screw augmentation with PMMA using anchoring effect is a Simple and effective surgical technique for pedicle screw loosening. However, clinical analyses of long-term follow-up and biomechanical studies are needed.

Epidural Leakage of Polymethylmethacrylate Following Percutaneous Vertebroplasty in the Patients with Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures (골다공증성 척추 압박골절 환자의 경피적 척추성형술에서 Polymethylmethacrylate의 경막 외 유출)

  • Objectives : The percutaneous vertebroplasty provides a good result in the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. But, the epidural leakage of polymethylmetacrylate(PMMA) after vertebroplasty may decrease the therapeutic effects because of the compression of thecal sac and/or nerve roots. The authors carried out a prospective study to evaluate the causative factors of epidural leakage of PMMA and to assess the influence on the outcome. Methods : This study involved 347 vertebral levels of compression fractures in 159 patients. Among these, the epidural leakages were identified in 92 vertebral levels(26.5%) in 64 patients(40.3%) on post-operative CT scan. Results : The incidence of epidural leakage of PMMA was significantly higher in the level above T7(p=0.001). The large amount of the injected PMMA and the use of an injector also increased the incidence(p=0.03 and p=0.045, respectively). The position of the needle tip in the vertebral body and the pattern of venous drainage did not influence. The immediate post-operative visual analogue scale(VAS) scores and facial scales(FS) were higher in the patients with epidural leakage(p=0.009). But there were no significant differences between the two groups after three months of operation(p=0.541). Conclusions : The incidence of epidural leakage of PMMA after percutaneous vertebroplasty appears to have relationship with the amount of PMMA and the levels injected. The epidural leakage of PMMA reduced the immediate therapeutic effects of vertebroplasty, but did not influence the late outcome. However, the epidural leakage should be avoided because of its potential neurological complications.

  • The influence of gravitational effect on the retention behaviors of polystyrene (PS) and polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in flat type thermal field flow fractionation (Thermal FFF) was studied. In the case of downward flow of mobile phase, the gravitational effect acting in the same direction of mobile phase flow increases as the angle of the system from the horizontal line (0˚to 60˚) increases. The decreasement of retention time of PS & PMMA was found. Also, the increasement of dimensionless λ values was found. And the difference in the retention time of PS & PMMA having different molecular weight decreases and also the resolution decreases. In the case of upward flow of mobile phase, the gravitational effect acting in the opposite direction of mobile phase flow increases as the angle of the system from the horizontal line (0˚to 60˚) increases. The increasement of retention time of PS & PMMA was found. Also, the decreasement of dimensionless λ values was found. And the difference in the retention time of PS & PMMA having different molecular weight increases and also the resolution increases.

  • 용액 공정을 이용한 Resistive random access memory (ReRAM)은 간단한 공정 과정, 대면적화, 저렴한 가격 등의 장점으로 인해 큰 관심을 받고 있으며, HfOx, TiOx, AlOx 등의 산화물이 ReRAM 절연 막으로 주로 연구되고 있다. 더 나아가 최근에는 organic 물질을 메모리 소자로 사용한 연구가 보고되고 있다. 이는 경제적이며, wearable 또는 flexible system에 적용이 용이하다. 그럼에도 불구하고, organic 물질을 갖는 메모리 소자는 기존의 산화물 소자에 비해 열에 취약하며 전기적인 특성과 신뢰성이 우수하지 못하다는 단점을 가지고 있다. 이를 위한 방안으로 본 연구에서는 AlOx - polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) blended thin film ReRAM을 제안하였다. 이는 organic물질의 전기적 특성을 개선시킬 뿐 아니라, inorganic 물질을 wearable 소자에 적용했을 때 발생하는 crack과 같은 기계적 물리적 결함을 해결할 수 있는 새로운 방법이다. 먼저, P-type Si 위에 습식산화를 통하여 SiO2 300 nm 성장시킨 기판을 사용하여 electron beam evaporation으로 10 nm의 Ti, 100 nm의 Pt 층을 차례로 증착하였다. 그리고 PMMA 용액과 AlOx 용액을 초음파를 이용하여 혼합한 뒤, 이 용액을 Pt 하부 전극 상에서 spin coating방법으로 1000 rpm 10초, 5000 rpm 30초의 조건으로 증착하였다. Solvent 및 불순물 제거를 위하여 150, 180, $210^{\circ}C$의 온도로 30 분 동안 열처리를 진행하였고, shadow mask를 이용하여 상부 전극인 Ti를 sputtering 방식으로 100 nm 증착하였다. 150, 180, $210^{\circ}C$로 각각 열처리한 AlOx - PMMA blended ReRAM의 전기적 특성은 HP 4156B semiconductor parameter analyzer를 이용하여 측정하였다. 측정 결과 제작된 소자 전부에서 2 V이하의 낮은 동작전압, 안정된 DC endurance (>150cycles), 102 이상의 높은 on/off ratio를 확인하였고, 그 중 $180^{\circ}C$에서 열처리한 ReRAM은 더 높은 on/off ratio를 갖는 것을 확인하였다. 결론적으로 baking 온도를 최적화하였으며 AlOx - PMMA blended film ReRAM의 우수한 메모리 특성을 확인하였다. AlOx-PMMA blended film ReRAM은 organic과 inorganic의 장점을 갖는 wearable 및 system용 비휘발성 메모리소자에 적용이 가능한 경제적인 기술로 판단된다.
