  • This study focuses on a determination of amount of Pt in the Pt/C for catalysts of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). PEMFC offer low weight and high power density and being considered for automotive and stationary power applications. The PEMFC performance is influenced by several factors, including catalysts and structure of electrode and membrane type. Catalyst of electrode is important factor for PEMFC. One of the obstacles prevent ing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells from commercialization is the high cost of noble metals to be used as catalyst, such as platinum To effectively use these metals, they have to be will dispersed to small particles on conductive carbon supports. The optimal amount of Pt in Pt/C for cathode catalyst was investigated by using polarization curves in single cell with $H_2/O_2$ operation.

Effects of Diffusion Layer (DL) and ORR Catalyst (MORR) on the Performance of MORR/IrO2/DL Electrodes for PEM-Type Unitized Regenerative Fuel Cells

  • This study aims to examine the influences of substrates/diffusion layers (DL) and oxygen reduction reaction catalysts ($M_{ORR}$) on the performance of $M_{ORR}/IrO_2$/DL-type bifunctional oxygen electrodes for use in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM)-type unitized regenerative fuel cells (URFC). The $M_{ORR}/IrO_2$/DL electrodes were prepared via two sequential steps: anodic electrodeposition of $IrO_2$ on various DLs and fabrication of $M_{ORR}$ layers (Pt, Pd, and Pt-Ru) by spraying on $IrO_2/DL$. Experiments using different DLs, with Pt as the $M_{ORR}$, revealed that the roughness factor of the DL mainly determined the electrode performance for both water electrolyzer (WE) and fuel cell (FC) operations, while the contributions of porosity and substrate material were insignificant. When Pt-Ru was utilized as the $M_{ORR}$ instead of Pt, WE performance was enhanced and the electrode performance was assessed by analyzing round-trip efficiencies (${\varepsilon}_{RT}$) at current densities of 0.2 and $0.4A/cm^2$. As a result, using Pt-Ru instead of Pt alone provided better ${\varepsilon}_{RT}$ at both current densities, while Pd resulted in very low ${\varepsilon}_{RT}$. Improved efficiency was related to the additional catalytic action by Ru toward ORR during WE operation.

술폰화 공정을 통해 제조한 고분자 전해질형 연료전지용 폴리(아릴렌 이서 케톤) 블록 코폴리머 (Poly(arylene ether ketone) block copolymer prepared through sulfonation process for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell)

  • 본 연구에서는 술폰화된 sodium 5,5'-carbonylbis(2-fluorobenzene sulfonate) 단량체를 이용하여 친수성 올리고머를 합성한 뒤 소수성 올리고머와 1:1로 공중합반응을 시켜 sulfonated poly(arylene ether ketone) (SPAEK) 공중합체를 합성하였다. 제조한 공중합체의 구조 분석은 $^1H$-NMR, FT-IR, GPC를 사용하여 실시하였고, GPC에서 공중합체의 평균분자량은 $209,700g\;mol^{-1}$, 다분산지수(PDI)는 1.25이었다. 열적 안정성을 확인하기 위하여 TGA 분석을 실시하였고, $200^{\circ}C$이상에서의 열 안정성을 확인하였다. 고분자 전해질 막의 양이온 전도도는 상대습도 100%, $80^{\circ}C$의 온도에서 약 $9.0mS\;cm^{-1}$이었다. 측정된 결과로부터 본 연구에서 제조한 탄화수소계 전해질 막은 술폰화 정도를 증가시키거나 약간의 구조적 변형을 통해 연료전지용 고분자 전해질 막으로 적용 가능할 것으로 기대된다.

  • A three dimensional numerical model to predict the flow and transport of mixtures and also the electrochemical reactions in polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells is developed. The numerical computation is base on vorticity- velocity method. Governing equations for the flow and transport of mixtures are coupled with the equations for electrochemical reactions and are solved simultaneously including production and condensation of vapor. Fuel cell performance predicted by this calculation is compared with the experimental results and resonable agreements are achieved.

연료전지용 MXenes의 등장 (Emergence of MXenes for Fuel Cell)

  • Recently, 2D materials greatly impact in the various applications especially in the energy conversion and storage devices. Among the 2D materials, nowadays researchers are showing their propensity towards the MXenes due to their potential structural and physical properties as well as their use in various applications. Recently, MXenes have been used as filler in polymer electrolytes membranes and as catalytic support to increase the performance of fuel cells (FCs). But this review covers only recent progress and application of MXenes in proton and anion exchange membranes for FCs. Also, this review will provide a significant guidance and broad overview for future research in MXenes based polymer electrolyte membrane for FCs.

블로워 구성 변경에 따른 상압형 자동차용 고분자전해질형 연료전지 시스템의 효율 특성 연구 (Study on the Characteristics of Low-pressure Automotive Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell System Efficiency with Blower Configuration)

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system receives great attention as a promising power device for automotive applications. For the wide commercialization, the efficiency and performance of automotive PEMFC system should be further improved in terms of total system (stack and balance of plant [BOP]). Air supply module, which is a major part of the BOP, greatly affects the efficiency of automotive PEMFC system. In this paper, a systematic study on the low-pressure automotive PEMFC system was made in an attempt to enhance the net system efficiency. This study mainly presents an investigation of the effect of blower configuration (1-blower and 2-blower) on the net system efficiency of automotive PEMFC system. For this purpose, the effect of operating pressure and cathode stoichiometry on the system efficiency was investigated with stack temperature under the fixed net system power condition. Results indicate that 1-blower system is better in system efficiency over 2-blower system under an air stoichiometry of 2. However, 2-blower system is better in system efficiency under an air stoichiometry of 3. The simulation results show that the optimum operating strategy needs to be established for various blower system configurations considering blower performance maps.

  • 본 연구에서는 고분자형 연료전지(PEMFC) 내의 기체확산층(GDL)에서의 물질 거동 전산해석을 통하여 GDL 물성이 전지성능에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. GDL 내에서 기상의 산소와 액상의 물의 거동을 계산하기 위하여 multi-phase mixture($M^2$) 모델을 사용하였다. GDL의 접촉각, 기공도, 기체투과도, 두께에 변화를 주며 계산을 실시하여 GDL 내에서의 물질 거동의 변화를 확인 하였고, GDL 물성이 전지성능에 미치는 영향을 파악하였다. 전산해석 결과, GDL의 접촉각과 기공도가 커지고, 두께가 얇아짐에 따라 물질전달 저항이 감소하여 GDL과 촉매층 사이의 계면에서의 물포화도가 낮아지고 산소농도는 증가하여 전지성능이 향상되는 것을 확인하였다.

  • In this study, sulfonated PAES block copolymers have been synthesized via nucleophilic substitution reaction. Hydrophobic oligomer was prepared using 2,6-dihydroxynaphthalene and bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone, whereas hydrophilic oligomer was prepared using sulfonated bis(4-chlorophenyl) sulfone and bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone. The chemical structure of polymers was analyzed by $^1H$ NMR, FT-IR and GPC. The thermal properties of polymers were measured by TGA and DSC. The oxidative stability of membranes was investigated by Fenton's test. Furthermore, the proton conductivity of membrane was found to be 26 mS/cm at $90^{\circ}C$. All physiochemical properties suggest that fabricated membrane have a great potential for applications in PEMFC.

  • 고분자전해질 연료전지(PEMFC)의 성능을 예측할 수 있는 empirical equation의 역할이 중요하게 대두되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 polarization curve에서 activation loss, ohmic loss, mass transfer loss 영역을 분리하였고, 현재까지 개발된 model 중 Kim의 model과 Hao의 model을 선정하여 각 영역의 fitting을 시행하였다. 온도, 압력, 산소 농도 및 막 두께를 운전변수로 설정하여 조건 변화에 대한 각 loss의 변화를 비교하였다. 기존 model은 전반적으로 좋은 fitting 정확도를 보였지만, 분리된 loss 영역에서는 부정확한 fitting 결과를 보이기도 하였다. 연료전지 성능 예측의 정확도를 개선하기 위하여 converge coefficient를 도입한 새로운 model을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 제안한 model을 연료전지 성능 예측에 적용한 경우에 신뢰도 평가에서 개선된 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • An experimental study is performed to evaluate the performance and the efficiency by humidifying MEA and by making the double-tied catalyst layers in a fuel cell system which is taken into account the physical and thermal concept. An electrical output produced by PEFC(polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell) is measured to assess the performance of the stack and the efficiency is also evaluated according to the different situation in which is placed with and without the humidification of MEA (Membrane Electrolyte Assembly). Subsequently, It is found that the measured values of stack voltage and current are influenced by the stack temperature, humidification, and the double-tied catalyst layers which gives more enhanced values to apply for electric units.
