  • In this study, we present a facile method of fabricating graphene oxide (GO) films on the surface of polyimide (PI) via layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly of charged GO. The positively charged amino-phenyl functionalized GO (APGO) is alternatively complexed with the negatively charged GO through an electrostatic LBL assembly process. Furthermore, we investigated the water vapor transmission rate and oxygen transmission rate of the prepared (reduced GO $[rGO]/rAPGO)_{10}$ deposited PI film (rGO/rAPGO/PI) and pure PI film. The water vapor transmission rate of the GO and APGO-coated PI composite film was increased due to the intrinsically hydrophilic property of the charged composite films. However, the oxygen transmission rate was decreased from 220 to 78 $cm^3/m^2{\cdot}day{\cdot}atm$, due to the barrier effect of the graphene films on the PI surface. Since the proposed method allows for large-scale production of graphene films, it is considered to have potential for utilization in various applications.

  • This study was a study on an facilitated transport membrane to replace the cryogenic separation method currently used in olefin/paraffin separation. Cost reduction is also a very important factor to commercialize facilitated transport membranes. However, AgBF4, which has been studied a lot, is a relatively expensive silver salt. To replace this, a PEBAX-2533/ AgCF3SO3/Al(NO3)3 composite film was prepared using relatively inexpensive AgCF3SO3. It was analyzed through SEM, FT-IR, and RAMAN. Through this study, it was confirmed that the polymer matrix affects the long-term stability.

  • In the recent, as a world demand of energy resources has been transformed from fossil fuels to hydrogen-based clean energy resources, a huge attention has been attracted to increase the performance and decrease a production cost of core materials in fuel cell technology. The utilization of reinforced composite membranes as electrolytes in the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells can reduce the use of high cost perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA), mitigate the cell impedance, and improve the dimensional stability as well as the interfacial stability, giving rise to achieve both an improved performance and a reduction of production costs of the fuel cell devices. In this study, we investigate the effects of physical characteristics and cell performances according to the various ionomer solvents in the solution based manufacturing process of reinforced composite electrolyte membrane.

  • Ceria ($CeO_2$) was used to increase the durability of the membrane in the polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) circumstance. The sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) as polymer matrix was prepared in the sulfonation reaction of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) to improve electrochemical characteristics. After sulfonation reaction, the organic-inorganic blended composite membranes were prepared by means of sol-gel casting method with loading the highly dispersed $CeO_2$ and Cs-substituted molybdophosphoric acid (Cs-MoPA) with cross-linking agent (tetrapropyl orthosilicate). Consequently, the composite membrane CL-SPEEK/Silane 4wt%/Cs-MoPA/Ceria(1%) showed the improved characteristics such as 82% of water content, 0.11136 S/cm of proton conductivity at $80^{\circ}C$, 55.50 MPa of tensile strength and 4.37% of breeding out of MoPA.

  • Ceria ($CeO_2$) was used to scavenge free radicals which attack the membrane in the polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) circumstance and to increase the duration of the membrane. In order to improve the electrochemical, mechanical and electrocatalytic characteristics, engineering plastic of the sulfonated polyether ether ketone (SPEEK) as polymer matrix was prepared in the sulfonation reaction of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and the organic-inorganic blended composite membranes were prepared by sol-gel casting method with loading the highly dispersed ceria and cesium-substituted phophomolybdic acid(Cs-MoPA) with cross-linking agent contents of 0.01mL. In conclusion, CL-SPEEK/$Cs_{(2.5)}$-MoPA/ceria(1%) membrane showed the optimum results such as 0.1095S/cm of proton conductivity at $80^{\circ}C$, 2.906meq./g-dry-membrane of ion exchange capacity and mechanical characteristics, and 49.73MPa of tensile strength which were better than Nafion 117 membrane.

  • The membranes of the blends of chitosan and polycaprolactarn (PA6) were prepared in formic acid. FT-IR data revealed that hydrogen bonding between amide and hydroxyl groups of chitosan and PA6, respectively, was formed. Thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the blend samples contain water. DMA results showed that the dissipation of water in the samples significantly reduced the storage modulus (E'). The mechanical loss tangent (tan $\delta$) data of the blend samples showed the $\beta$d loss peak around $0^{\circ}C$. The blend samples were completely dried in a vacuum and then exposed to high moisture to absorb water which would cause, so called, w-bridges between the molecules. The E' data of these regained samples increased abnormally and additional loss peak appeared on the shoulder of the peak around $50^{\circ}C$. Under dry condition, the samples with a blend ratio of 40/60 for chitosan/PA6 displayed a better miscibility between two components.

  • Poly(ether block amide) (PEBA) is one of the commercially important class of block copolymer very much suitable specifically for $CO_2$ separation. Gas separation membrane need to have good mechanical strength as well as high gas permeability. The crystalline polyamide (PA) block provides the mechanical strength while the rubbery polyether (PE) group being $CO_2$-philic facilitate $CO_2$ permeation though the membrane. Composition of thermoplastic and rubbery phase in the polymer are changed to fit into suitable gas separation application. Although PEBA has good permeability, the selectivity of the membrane can be enhanced by incorporating molecular sieve without affection much the gas permeability. Mixed matrix membrane (MMM), a class of composite membrane combine the advantage of polymer matrix with the inorganic fillers. However, there are some disadvantages based on the compatibility of the inorganic fillers and polymeric phase. This review covers both the advantage and limitations of PEBA block copolymer based composite membrane.

  • This is the research about the concentration of trace Magnolia flavor components in water by pervaporation. We have investigated the change of selectivity depending on support membrane structure and active layer thickness using prepared PVDF/PDMS composite membrane. Through the pure water flux test for PVDF support membrane, we could indirectly confirm that as the coagulation temperature decreases and the polymer concentration increases, the surface porosity and pore diameter decreases. Appling these results to transport mechanism, we could explain the effect of support membrane structure for the composite membrane. The selectivity increases as the thickness of PDMS active layer increases. We could know that there is a limitation to describe the transport on the active layer by Fick's law through these results.

  • Climate change results in unusual weather pattern and affects annual rain fall severely. At the same time, growing industrialization leads to higher energy demand and leakage from petrochemical industry and tanker leads to water pollution. In this scenario, finding out solution to generate clean water is highly essential. For oil/water separation, there are several methods available such as chemical precipitation and adsorption but membrane separation technique is considered to be a more cost and energy efficient process. Amphiphilicity nature of membrane are enhanced by making composite membrane with 2D material such as MXene, resulting in good electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity. This review is mainly classified into two sections: pure MXene and modified MXene. A variety of polymer is used to prepare composite membranes and MXene is modified to further enhance the properties suitable for particular applications.

  • Sol-gel methods offer many advantages over conventional slip-casting, including the ability to produce ceramic membranes. They are purer, more homogeneous, more reactive and contain a wider variety of compositions. We produced ormosil sol using sol-gel process under various molecular weight of polymer species[polyethylene glycol(PEG)] in total system [Tetraethyl ortho silicate(TEOS)-polyethylene glycol(PEG)]. The properties of as-prepared ormosil sol such as viscosity and gelation time are characterized. Also, the ceramic membrane was prepared by dip-coating with synthetic sol and its microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The permeability and rejection efficiency of membrane for oil/water emulsion were evaluated as crossflow apparatus. The ormosil sol coated membrane was easily formed by steric effect of polymer and it improved flux efficiency because infiltration into porous support decreased. Its flux efficiency was elevated about $200\;l/m^2h$ compared with colloidal sol coated membrane at point of five minutes from starting test.
