  • Generally, polymer mortar made with unsaturated polyester(UP) resin has a high curing shrinkage. This is an inadequate as repair material and construction products that have been widely used for years recently. To overcome these problems, polymer researchers and engineers have used shrinkage-reducing additives, which are usually specific thermoplastic polymers. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of shrinkage-reducing additive on the curing shrinkage and strengths of UP mortar. UP mortars are prepared with expanded polystyrene(EPS) ratio in styrene monomer(SM), (EPS/PS, PS=EPS+SM), and the ratio of total polystyrene resin(PS) to UP resin, (PS/UP). And it is tested for viscosity of UP resin, slump-flow, working life, flexural and compressive strengths, and curing shrinkage tests. From the test results, viscosity of resin for UP mortar increases with increasing PS content. Curing shrinkage of UP mortar is considerably smaller than that of plain UP mortar, nevertheless, reduction in the strengths is not recognized according to adding PS resin. In this study, we can obtain the optimum mix proportions of UP mortar using PS resin which made of waste expanded polystyrene.

  • The physical properties of polymer concrete were investigated for development of high-performance construction materials. Various specimens of polymer concrete were prepared using unsaturated polyester resin as the polymer-binder with the various dosage of calcium carbonate as microfiller (5~20 wt %) and fine aggregate(10~50 wt %). For the evaluation of the physical properties of polymer concretes, tests such as compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption test, hot water immersion test, acid resistance test and pore size distribution analysis were conducted. As a result, it is concluded that compressive and flexural strengths of polymer concretes increased up to 4 times than those of conventional cement concrete. Whereas the compressive and flexural strengths of polymer concretes tested after hot water immersion, compared with those of polymer concretes tested before hot water immersion, decreased about 67%, 47%, respectively. By hot water immersion, total pore volume and porosity(%) of polymer concretes were remarkable increased due to decomposition of polymer binder. And also, it is showed that water absorption(%) and weight loss(%) of polymer concrete specimens by acid immersion, compared with those of ordinary portland cement concrete, decreased about 1/100, 1/27, respectively.

  • The sprayed FRP strengthening technique is combining the Glass fiber and Polyester resin in open air and spraying randomly at concrete's surface with high-speed compressed air. Then it strengthens the structures with a new technique evaluated the structural performance. We applied it to concrete beam and tested for flexural strength, depended on Korea Standard(KS F 2408). Then based on the result of flexural strength, the properties were proposed that applying to structures. Based on the experiment, we have evaluated structural performance by the experiment. 1/5 scale prestressed concrete I-beam were made by Korean Highway's typical drawing in 1993. With these test results, 49.8% increased in flexural strength, improvement of the behavior of serviceability state, and strengthening was surely effective for controlling deflection and crack of structure. Consequently, it can be summarized that Sprayed FRP technique has prospect to improve the performance of structure.

  • This study was performed to determine the effects of filling materials on the physical properties of permeable polymer concrete. The filling materials were ground calcium carbonate, ground granulated blast furnace slag and fly ash. In this experiment, permeable polymer concrete mixtures with unsaturated polyester resin contents from 5 to 7 weight %, filler/resin ratio of 0~2.0 and crushed coarse aggregate passing 15 mm sieve were prepared and coefficient of permeability, void ratio, compressive strength and flexural strength were tested. As the test results, increase in the strength and decrease in the coefficient of permeability of the permeable polymer concrete were generally observed with increasing the resin contents and filler/resin ratio. The compressive and flexural strength of the permeable polymer concrete were in the range of 8.0 to 35.0 MPa and 2.0 to 9.0 MPa respectively and the highest strength was shown at the mixtures with 7 weight % unsaturated polyester resin contents, 2.0 ratio of filler/resin and filler of ground calcium carbonate. On the other hand, in the level of 20 MPa compressive strength, the mixtures with filler of fly ash was shown as the most economic permeable polymer concrete.

  • This study treats the improvement of the dielectric strength of polymer by eliminating the air in it and dissolving electronegative gases. As experimental material, unsaturated polyester resin was used and the specimen was made by dissolving NS12T. SFS16T abd CCIS12TFS12T gases which have strong electron affinity. And also the electrical properties (tree growth and breakdown characteristics) of them were tested and discussed. The results are as follows. When the specimen dissolved with electronegative gas compared with one with air` 1) The tree breakdown voltage of the former is higher than that of the latter. 2) The tree growth of the former is slower than that of the latter. 3) The temperature dependence of the former is smaller than that of the latter. 4) The breakdown voltage of the specimen dissolved with electronegative gas is much higher than that dissolved with air.

  • Carbon nanofiber (CNF)/unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) was prepared by a solvent evaporation method, and the temperature dependency of electrical conductivity was investigated. The CNF/UPR composites had quite a low percolation threshold due to CNF having a larger aspect ratio and being well dispersed in the UPR matrix. The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) was found in the CNF/UPR composites and it showed stronger effect around the percolation threshold. The electrical resistance of the CNF/UPR composites decreased and had lower temperature dependency with increasing numbers of thermal cycles.

  • Polymer concrete (PC) using unsaturated polyester resins based on recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste were used in our study for grasping its mechanical properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength, etc. by changing its quantity of resin, filler and dilution(SM) respectively. As a result of it, compressive, tensile and flexural strength of PC indicated 752kgf/$cm^2$, 80kgf/$cm^2$, and 243kgf/$cm^2$, kind of satisfaction successively. Judging from the above results, polymer concrete (PC) using unsaturated polyester resins as a coupling are suitable for construction material both in the aspect of ECO-building materials and in the aspect of superior strength of PC so that it is good possibility of success as a product.

  • Mineral filler is used for resin compounds, because it increases the stiffness and thermal stability of a resin compound, and it also cuts down the cost. Calcium carbonate, silica, magnesium oxide, and others are used as filler materials in general, and the type of filler material, the size, and content can affect the physical properties of compounds. Those factors also influence the viscosity of resin mixtures and the workability, and should be adjusted by changing the contents of the filler, which depends on the size. In this study, five kinds of ground calcium carbonate, which were different in size, were used to produce polyester compounds ; the physical properties were compared with the filler size and contents. The mechanical properties were measured by bending strength and tensile strength, and the heat deflection temperature was obtained for thermal stability.

  • This study was intended to clarify (1) the release of free formaldehyde (2) transfer of free formaldehyde to the contacted fabrics during storing, and (3) the removal effect of free formaldehyde by washing from resin finished fabrics. The results of this study were as follow; 1. The decrease rate of free formaldehyde content in fabrics was higher during storing in open air, poly bag, and glass tube in descending order and the content of free formaldehyde in fabrics was decreased in glyoxal resin finished but, increased in Melamine M-3 resin finished when the fabrics was stored in polybag and in glass tube. 2. Increased amount of formaldehyde transfer to contacted fabrics was noted with Melamine M-3 resin finished than that of glyoxal resin finished. Increased amount of formaldehyde transfer as well as more free formaldehyde were noted in cotton fabrics than in polyester/ cotton blend. 3. The effect of removing free formaldehyde from the fabrics was better in case of solid alkaline soap, synthetic alkaline powdered detergents, neutral detergents in descending order. The romoval of free formaldehyde was marked after the 1st washing and almost no increase in free formaldehyde was found after three times of washing. 4. After first washing, the content of formaldehyde in Melamine M-3 resin finished fabrics increased more rapidly than that of glyoxal resin finished fabrics in condition of closed storing.
