  • Poly(vinyl pivalate) (PVPi) was bulk polymerized to make poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microfibrils to apply for polymeric embolization coils replacing metalic coils. Then, syndiotactic PVA (s-PVA) microfibrils having number-average degree of polymerization of 1100 and s-diad content of 60.4% were prepared via saponification of the PVPi with no separate spinning process. To make s-PVA microfibrils with radiopacity, zirconium dioxide ($ZrO_2$) and barium sulfate ($BaSO_4$) were added into s-PVA microfibrils during saponification. The computed tomography (CT) value indicating radiopacity reached up to over 1000 when the amount of $ZrO_2$ and $BaSO_4$ were 12 and 6 wt%, respectively.

  • Multilayer Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA)/ Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) bone plates were fabricated using electrospinning and in vitro investigations were carried out for pre-clinical biocompatibility studies. The initial cellular cytotoxicity of the methacrylate (PMMA)/ Poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) bone plates was measured by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay using fibroblast-like L-929 cells. Cellular adhesion and differentiation studies were carried out using osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. As simulated body fluid (SBF) contains the same ionic concentration of body fluid and any bioactive material tends to deposit bone-like apatite on the samples surfaces into the SBF, in vitro bioactivity of the multilayer bone plates were investigated using SBF. We also studied the internal organization and tensile strength of the multilayer PMMA/PVA bone plates using micro-computed topography (${\mu}$-CT) and universal testing instrument (UTI, Korea) respectively. The cellular cytotoxicity study with MTT confirmed that the cellular viability was 78 to 90% which indicates good cyto-compatibility. Scanning electron microscopic findings revealed a good attachment and adhesion phenomenon of MG-63 cells onto the surfaces of the samples. Cellular differentiation studies also showed that osteogenic differentiation was switched on in a timely manner and affirmed along with that of the control group. Bone-like apatite formation on the surfaces was confirmed within 14 days of SBF incubation. Initial organizations of the multilayer PMMA/PVA bone plates were characterized as dense and uniform. The tensile strength of the post-pressing electronspun mat was higher than that of the pre-electronspun mat. These results suggest that a multilayer PMMA/PVA bone plate system is biocompatible, bioactive and a very good alternative bone plate system.

  • Vinyl acetate (VAc) was polymerized at 30, 40, and 5$0^{\circ}C$ using 2,2'-azobis (2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile) (ADMVN) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) as the initiator and the solvent, respectively. High molecular weight (HMW) atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) was prepared by saponifying the poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) synthesized. The effect of polymerization conditions were investigated in terms of conversion, degree of branching for acetyl group of PVAc, and molecular weight of both PVAc and PVA. The polymerization rate of VAc in TBA was proportional to the 0.49th power of ADMVN concentration in good accordance with the theoretical value of 0.5. HMW-PVA with high yield could be obtained successfully, probably due to lower polymerization temperature and decreased chain transfer reaction rate which was achieved by adopting ADMVN and TBA. PYAc having average degree of polymerization (P$_{n}$) of 10000~13000 was obtained at the conversion of 35~70%. Saponification of so prepared PVAc yielded PVA having P$_{n}$ of 2400~6100. The syndiotactic diad content increased with decreasing polymerization temperature and increasing VAc concentration due to a steric hindrance effect of TBA during polymerization.

  • Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) from which atactic poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is derived, is always noncrystalline. This was attributed to the irregular steric arrangement of the acetyl groups in PVAc. However, the X-ray diffraction patterns of atactic PVA, a derivative of PVAc, were found to show distinct crystallinity, and to give an identity period of 2,52 ${\AA}$ along the fiber axis, despite the expectation of an irregular arrangement of the hydroxyl groups in atactic PVA, in the same manner as that of the acetyl groups in PVAc.(omitted)

  • The ion exchange membranes prepared from the reaction between poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) which is known as the good methanol barrier in pervaporation membrane processes and sulfo-succinic acid (SSA) was used as the basic membranes. In order to improve the ion exchange capacity, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was added to this ion exchange membranes. The methanol permeabilities, ion conductivities, water contents and ion exchange capacity were measured for the resulting membranes with varying PAA contents. In general, methanol permeability and ion conductivity of PVA/SSA/PAA membranes were less than those of PVA/SSA membranes due to the reduction of free volumes resulted from crosslinking. The vehicle mechanism could be more dominant than jump mechanism for membranes in question.

  • Bulk polymerization was used to produce poly(vinyl acetate) with different molecular weights, which were then saponified to prepare poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with different molecular weights. With Pn of 2,060 and 3,240, the optimum film formation concentrations of PVA were found 7.5wt.% and 6.5wt.%, respectively. The drawing characteristics of the PVA film prepared at the optimum film formation concentrations were experimented, as well as the thermal characteristics of the PVA film based on the drawing ratio were observed. When the drawing velocity was fixed, it was found that the drawing ratios of all samples decreased as the heat band gap increased, and the melting temperature of the PVA film slightly increased as the drawing ratio increased regardless of the Pn of PVA.

  • The polarization characteristics of poly(vinyl alcohol)-iodine complex, (PVA-KI system) prepared by the oxidation process of PVA film containing a potassium iodide (KI) were investigated. The UV-visible spectrum of the PVA-KI system polarizing film showed avsorption bands corresponding to $I^{-}$, $I{_3}{^-}$ and $I{_5}{^-}$ chromophoric species at 220 nm, 290~360 nm, respectively. The polarization efficiency and transmittance of PVA-KI system film were significantly influenced by oxidation time, stretching ratio and concentration of KI. The prepared polarizing film exhibited a high polarization efficiency(99.5%) and transmittance(45%). Especially, the heat resistance of the polarizing film was higher than that of a commercial PVA-$I_2$ polarizing film. It may be argued that the result should come from a difference in oxidation process of PVA polarizing film.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is an interesting material with good biocompatibility, high elasticity and hydrophilic chacrateristics. In this study, crosslinked hydrogels based on PVA, and poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) were prepared by gamma-ray irradiation. PVA and PAAc powders were dissolved in deionized water, and then irradiated by a gamma-ray with a radiation dose of 50 kGy to make hydrogels. The hydrogels were then annealed in an oven at $120^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, 30 min and 50 min under nitrogen atmosphere. The properties of a hydrogel such as gel fraction, swelling behavior, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and adhesive strength as a function of PAAc content and annealing time were investigated. The gel fraction decreases with decreasing PAAc content and increasing annealing time. The thermal behaviors have shown different patterns according to the annealing time. The adhesive strength increases with increasing PAAc content.

  • This paper concerns the development of a cationic polymeric membranes for direct methanol fuel cell. The crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes with poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAM) and hydroquinonesulfonic acid (HQSA) as the crosslinking agents were prepared according to the amount of crosslinking agents. The resulting membranes were characterized in terms of methanol permeability, proton conductivity, water content and ion exchange capacity. The methanol permeability and proton conductivity increased with increasing PAM content up to 9 wt% and then decreased. This trend is considered the effect of the cross linking rather than the introduction of hydrophilic groups. When the HQSA contents were varied, no interesting increases of proton conductivity, water content and ion exchange capacity were found.
