  • A paradigm shift in driving system of transportation vehicle from engine to electric motor is required as the problems on air pollution and drain of petroleum resource are on the rize. Moreover while it is possible to control the motor with variable frequency driver, the application of motor in various kinds of vehicles is spread rapidly. In the paper, the effective design method of IPMSM for EV and HEV by using equivalent magnetic circuit and finite element method (FEM) is suggested. First of all, load conditions of the application are calculated. And basic design process of IPMSM is proposed with two design point. Finally, in order to verify the proposed design process, it was compared with the basic design parameter and the FEM analysis results.

  • Modeling the statistical autocorrelations in spatial data is often achieved through the estimation of the variograms, where the selection of the appropriate valid variogram model, especially for small samples, is crucial for achieving precise spatial prediction results from kriging interpolations. To estimate such a variogram, we traditionally start by computing the empirical variogram (traditional Matheron or robust Cressie-Hawkins or kernel-based nonparametric approaches). In this article, we conduct numerical studies comparing the performance of these empirical variograms. In most situations, the nonparametric empirical variable nearest-neighbor (VNN) showed better performance than its competitors (Matheron, Cressie-Hawkins, and Nadaraya-Watson). The analysis of the spatial groundwater dataset used in this article suggests that the wave variogram model, with hole effect structure, fitted to the empirical VNN variogram is the most appropriate choice. This selected variogram is used with the ordinary kriging model to produce the predicted pollution map of the nitrate concentrations in groundwater dataset.

  • Smoke, Hydrocarbon and Garbon Monoxide emissions of concern in environmental pollution on AVDS-170-2D diesel engine were studied experimentally and past studies on emissions of diesel engine were investigate. Engine speed and load were considered as variable factors influencing the emissions. The test results of a multicylinder, direct injection and turblcharged 4 cycle diesel engine were compared with past studies. Both emission levels of experimental study and past studies were markedly influenced by engine operation factors. The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follows; 1) Smoke intensity is proportional to engine load and varies with engine speed. 2) Hydrocarbon and nitric oxides emissions vary with engine speed and load. 3) Garbon monoxide emission is insensitive to engine speed and varies with engine load.

  • At the present time the desalination technology of sea water for portable water in islands employs the RO method. The technology which needs complicated pretreatment processes with various chemicals can generate secondary water pollution and the high maintenance costs such as replacements of filters and membranes make islanders nearly impossible to operate. The MVRS technology for desalination of sea water however has several advantages such as constant production of quality portable water and capability of managing broad operating load. The variable-speed turbo-type vapor compressors employed in the system can utilize wind energy which is abundant in most Korean islands. Salt as a by-product can be produced by applying solar energy to the salt-concentrated waste water from the system. This paper discusses the relating topics such as technical and economical viabilities of the new MVRS desalination system for the production of portable water and salt as a by-product using new & renewable sources of energy.

  • This paper considers the problem of adaptive fault-tolerant guaranteed cost controller design via dynamic output feedback for a class of linear time-delay systems against actuator faults. A new variable gain controller is established, whose gains are tuned by the designed adaptive laws. More relaxed sufficient conditions are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), compared with the corresponding fault-tolerant controller with fixed gains. A real application example about river pollution process is presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The use of HDL(Hardware Description Language) is now central to the ASIC(Application Specific Integrated Circuit). HDL-based ASIC can simplify the process of development and has a competition in market because it reduce the consuming time for the design of IC(Integrated circuit) in system level. Therefore, the development of power electronics system on chip (SOC), to design microcontroller and switching logic as one chip, is required extremely for the purpose of having reliability and low cost in power electronics which is based on switching elements. The major application of SOC is variable converter, active filter inverter for induction motor. UPS and power supply with a view to reducing electro-magnetic pollution.

  • Concerns for wind energy as alternative energy have been highly increased, because of the problems such as the global warming effect, environmental pollution, the exhausting fossil fuel, and so on. Recently, the number of variable-speed wind turbines adopted pitch control apparatus has increased. In this paper, the mechanism between the wind energy and power generating system has been presented to specify the relationship of the energy transfer using the Pitch Control.

  • Solid and hazardous waste disposal site selection by using GIS(Geographic Information System) is the purpose of this study. The criteria of site selection are usually defined in accordance with geological, cultural and social characteristics. Unadequate adaptation of these criteria in a site selection may cause serious problem of water and soil pollution. The environmental information for extraction of these criteria consist of a lot of data : geology, geomorphology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, cultural and social information.... GIS could be easily applied to construct of this environmental information data base, and carry out cartography simulation using overlay mapping technique(polygon overlay). ARC/INFO(GIS system) was used for these studies, and AML(ARC/INFO Macro Language) in this system provided more variable and effective methods for cartography simulation. TM(Thematic Mapper) images were used for the evaluation of land cover/use in the studied area, by using ERDAS image processing system.

  • In this paper, we develop a new statistical model to forecast the PM2.5 level in Seoul, South Korea. The proposed model is based on the extreme quantile regression model with lasso penalty. Various meteorological variables and air pollution variables are considered as predictors in the regression model, and the lasso quantile regression performs variable selection and solves the multicollinearity problem. The final prediction model is obtained by combining various extreme lasso quantile regression estimators and we construct a binary classifier based on the model. Prediction performance is evaluated through the statistical measures of the performance of a binary classification test. We observe that the proposed method works better compared to the other classification methods, and predicts 'very bad' cases of the PM2.5 level well.

  • Background: Artificial light at night (ALAN) has been linked to increased risk of cancers in body sites like the breast and colorectum. However exposure of ALAN as an environmental risk factor and its relation to cancers in humans has never been studied in detail. Objective: To explore the association of ALAN with all forms of cancers in 158 countries. Materials and Methods: An ecological study encompassing global data was conducted from January to June 2015, with age-standardized rates (ASR) of cancers as the outcome measure. ALAN, in the protected areas, as the exposure variable, was measured with reference to the Protected Area Light Pollution Indicator (PALI) and the Protected Area Human Influence Indicator (PAHI). Pearson's correlations were calculated for PALI and PAHI with ASR of cancers for 158 countries, adjusted for country populations, electricity consumption, air pollution, and total area covered by forest. Stratified analysis was conducted according to the country income levels. Linear regression was applied to measure the variation in cancers explained by PALI and PAHI. Results: PALI and PAHI were positively associated with ASR of all forms of cancer, and also the four most common cancers (p < 0.05). These positive correlations remained statistically significant for PAHI with all forms of cancer, lung, breast, and colorectal cancer after adjusting for confounders. Positive associations of PALI and PAHI with cancers varied with income level of the individual countries. Variation in all forms of cancers, and the four most common cancers explained by PALI and PAHI, ranged from 3.3 - 35.5%. Conclusion: Artificial light at night is significantly correlated for all forms of cancer as well as lung, breast, colorectal, and prostate cancers individually. Immediate measures should be taken to limit artificial light at night in the main cities around the world and also inside houses.
