  • The change in global climate and Asian monsoon patterns during the mid-Holocene, 6000 years before present (6 ka), is simulated by a climate model at spectral truncations of T170 with 18 vertical layers, corresponding to grid-cell sizes of roughly 75km. The present simulation is forced with the observed monthly data of sea surface temperatures, and the specified concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, while in the mid-Holocene experiment, orbital parameters such as obliquity, precession, and eccentricity are changed to the 6ka conditions. Under such conditions, the precipitation associated with the summer monsoon is enhanced over a wider zonal band from the Middle East to Southeast Asia, while no significant alteration takes Place in winter. The monsoonal wind also increases over the Arabian Sea, showing the enhanced southwesterly wind during summer and northeasterly wind during winter. Overall, the showing of the Asian monsoon is enhanced during the mid-Holocene, especially in summer, which is consistent with the proxy estimates and other previous model simulations.

  • We simulate the propagation of earthquake waves in the continental margin of Antarctica using the elastic wave modeling algorithm, which is modified to be suitable for acoustic-elastic coupled media and earthquake source. To simulate the various types of earthquake source, the staggered-grid finite-difference method, which is composed of velocity-stress formulae, can be more appropriate to use than the conventional, displacement-based, finite-difference method. We simulate the elastic wave propagation generated by earthquakes combining 3D staggered-grid finite-difference algorithm composed of displacement-velocity-stress formulae with double couple mechanisms for earthquake source. Through numerical tests for left-lateral strike-slip fault, normal fault and reverse fault, we could confirm that the first arrival of P waves at the surface is in a good agreement with the theoretically-predicted results based on the focal mechanism of an earthquake. Numerical results for a model made after the subduction zone in the continental margin of Antarctica showed that earthquake waves, generated by the reverse fault and propagating through the continental crust, the oceanic crust and the ocean, are accurately described.

  • A heat transfer analysis for the two-dimensional (2-D) steady state using finite difference method (FDM) is performed to predict the thermal behavior of the primary first-wall (FW) system of fusion reactor under various geometric and thermo-hydraulic conditions, such as the beryllium (Be) armor thickness, pitch of cooling tube, and coolant velocity. The FW consists of authentic steel (type 316 stainless steel solution annealed) for cooling tubes, Cu for cooling tubes embedding material, and Be for a protective armor, based on the International Thermonuclear Experiment Reactor (ITER) report. The present 2-D analysis, the control volume discretized with hybrid grid (rectangular grid and polar grid) and Gauss-Seidel iteration method are adapted to solve the governing equations. In the present study, geometric and thermo-hydraulic parameters are optimized with consideration of several limitations. Consequently, it is suggested that the adequate pitch of cooling tube is 22-32mm, the beryllium armor thickness is 10-12mm, and that the coolant velocity is 4.5m/s-6m/s for $100^{\circ}C$ of inlet coolant temperature. The cooling tube should locate near beryllium armor. But, it would be better for locating the center of Cu wall, considering problems of material and manufacturing. Also, 2-D analysis neglecting the axial temperature distribution of cooling tube is appropriate, regarding the discretization error in axial direction.

  • This paper is related to a new solar power conditioner for a built-in step-up chopper function. In the first step-up chopper proposed solar PV power conditioner for mutually connected in series with the input voltage of the bypass diodes are respectively connected to the positive terminal should install the mutual boosting chopper diode connected in series with the boost chopper switching element between the two power supply and at the same time the first and the second was connected to a second diode and a resonance inductor and a snubber capacitor in series with each other. And the common connection point between the bypass diode and the step-up chopper and the step-up chopper diode common connection point of the switching elements of the input voltage was set to the boost inductor for storing energy. In addition, between the step-up chopper and the step-up chopper diode and a switching element of a joint connection point of the first auxiliary diode and the second common connection point of the auxiliary diode was provided, the resonance capacitor. Between the step-up chopper and the step-up chopper diode and a switching element of a joint connection point and the common connection point of the resonance inductor snubber capacitor and connecting the third secondary diode, between two power supply lines is characterized by configuring the DC link capacitor bus lines in parallel. Therefore, it is possible to suppress the switching loss through, DC link bus lines, as well as there could seek miniaturization and weight reduction of the power conditioner itself by using a common capacitor of the non-polar non-polar electrolytic capacitor having a capacitor, the service life of the circuit can be extended and it is possible to greatly reduce the loss can be greatly improve the reliability of the product and the operation of the product itself.

  • This paper presents an integrated approach to unconstrained face recognition in arbitrary scenes. The front end of the system comprises of a scale and pose tolerant face detector. Scale normalization is achieved through novel combination of a skin color segmentation and log-polar mapping procedure. Principal component analysis is used with the multi-view approach proposed in[10] to handle the pose variations. For a given color input image, the detector encloses a face in a complex scene within a circular boundary and indicates the position of the nose. Next, for recognition, a radial grid mapping centered on the nose yields a feature vector within the circular boundary. As the width of the color segmented region provides an estimated size for the face, the extracted feature vector is scale normalized by the estimated size. The feature vector is input to a trained neural network classifier for face identification. The system was evaluated using a database of 20 person's faces with varying scale and pose obtained on different complex backgrounds. The performance of the face recognizer was also quite good except for sensitivity to small scale face images. The integrated system achieved average recognition rates of 87% to 92%.

  • A new local path planning algorithm using DPH (distance profile histogram) is suggested in this paper. The proposed method makes a grid type world map using distance values from multiple ultrasonic sensors and genrates local points through which the mobile robot can avoid obstcles safely. The DPH (distance profile historgram) represents geometrical arrangement of obstacles around the robot in the local polar coordinate system which is assumed to be atached to the robot. To control robot's navigation, a three-layered control structure is adopted. The proposed local path planning algorithm is placed on the top level. And a point-to-point translation controller takes the middle level. The bottom level consists of a velcoity servo and sonar driver modules which take charge of driving physical hardwares. The validity of the propsoed method is demonstated through several experiments.

  • This paper shows shear wave behavior of CFRP composite laminates as a polar grid form to evaluate vibration pattern of ultrasonic transducers, which gives measured modelling fundamental contents of nondestructive evaluation. Polarized direction can be obtained by using a c-scanner and sensitivity of transducers is founded when using through-transmission method of two transducers. And modelling of vector decomposition is presented based on ply-to-ply method to apply practicable nondestructive evaluation of CFRP laminate lay up. This modelling decomposes the transmission of linearly polarized wave into orthogonal components through each ply of a laminate. It is found that a high provable shows between the model and experimental developed in characterizing layup of CFRP composite laminates.

  • Beta-asarone is the well-known active ingredient of Rhizoma acori graminei. In this study, we investigated and compared the binding affinity of mosquito oviposition pheromone (MOP; (5R,6S)-6-acetoxy-5-hexadecanolide) and beta-asarone on the A domain of the mosquito odorant binding protein 1 (CquiOBP1) by in silico computational docking studies. The three-dimensional crystallographic structure of CquiOBP1 was obtained from the PDB database (PDB ID: 3OGN). In silico computational auto-docking analysis was performed using PyRx, Autodock Vina, Discovery Studio Version 4.5, and the NX-QuickPharm option based on scoring functions. The beta-asarone showed optimum binding affinity (docking energy) with CquiOBP1 as -6.40 kcal/mol as compared to the MOP (-6.00 kcal/mol). Among the interacting amino acids (LEU76, LEU80, ALA88, MET89, HIS111, TRP114, and TYR122), tryptophan 114 in the CquiOBP1 active site significantly interacted with both MOP and beta-asarone. Amino acids substitution (mutation) from non-polar groups to the polar (or charged) groups of the CquiOBP1 dramatically changed the X, Y, Z grid position and binding affinity of both ligands. These results significantly indicated that beta-asarone could be a more potent ligand to the CquiOBP1 than MOP. Therefore, the extract of Rhizoma acori graminei or beta-asarone can be applied to the fields of insecticidal and repellant biomaterial development.

  • Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction System (KIAPS) has been developing a global numerial prediction model and data assimilation system. We has implemented LETKF (Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter, Hunt et al., 2007) data assimilation system to NCAR CAM-SE (National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Atmosphere Model with Spectral Element dynamical core, Dennis et al., 2012) that has cubed-sphere grid, known as the same grid system of KIAPS Integrated Model (KIM) now developing. In this study, we have assimilated Global Positioning System Radio Occultation (GPS-RO) bending angle measurements in addition to conventional data within ensemble-based data assimilation system. Before assimilating bending angle data, we performed a vertical unit conversion. The information of vertical localization for GPS-RO data is given by the unit of meter, but the vertical localization method in the LETKF system is based on pressure unit. Therefore, with a clever conversion of the vertical information, we have conducted experiments to search for the best vertical localization scale on GPS-RO data under the Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs). As a result, we found the optimal setting of vertical localization for the GPS-RO bending angle data assimilation. We plan to apply the selected localization strategy to the LETKF system implemented to KIM which is expected to give better analysis of GPS-RO data assimilation due to much higher model top.
