Disposal repository for high-level radioactive waste secures its safety by means of engineered and natural barriers. The performance of these barriers should be tested and verified through various aspects in terms of short and/or long-term. KAERI has been conducting various in-situ demonstrations in KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel). After completing previous experiment, a conceptual design of an improved in-situ experiment, i.e. K-COIN (KURT experiment of THMC COupled and INteraction), was established and detailed planning for the experiment is underway. Preliminary characterizations were conducted in KURT for siting a K-COIN test site. 15 boreholes with a depth of about 20 m were drilled in three research galleries in KURT and intact rock specimens were prepared for laboratory tests. Using the specimens, physical measurements, uniaxial compression, indirect tension, and triaxial compression tests were conducted. As a result, specific gravity, porosity, elastic wave velocities, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, Brazilian tensile strength, cohesion, and internal friction angle were estimated. Statistical analyses revealed that there did not exist meaningful differences in intact rock properties according to the drilled sites and the depth. Judging from the uniaxial compressive strength, which is one of the most important properties, all the specimens were classified as very strong rock so that mechanical safety was secured in all the regions.

Studies were conducted to select the candidate buffer material for a high-level waste (HLW) repository in Korea. This paper presents the hydraulic properties, the swelling properties, the thermal properties, and the mechanical properties as well as the radionuclide release-retarding capacity of Kyungju bentonite as part of those studies. Experimental results showed that the hydraulic conductivities of the compacted bentonite were very low and less than $10^{-11}$m/s. The values decreased with increasing the dry density of the compacted bentonite. The swelling pressures were in the range of 0.66 MPa to 14.4 ㎫ and they increased with increasing the dry density. The thermal conductivities were in the range of 0.80 ㎉/m $h^{\circ}C$ to 1.52 ㎉/m $h^{\circ}C$. The unconfined compressive strength, Young's modulus and Poison's ratio showed the range of 0.55 ㎫ to 8.83 ㎫, 59 ㎫ to 1275 ㎫, and 0.05 to 0.20, respectively, when the dry densities of the compacted bentonite were 1.4 Ms/㎥ to 1.8 Mg/㎥. The diffusion coefficients in the compacted bentonite were measured under an oxidizing condition. The values were $1.7{\times}10^{-10}$m^2$/s to 3.4{\times}10^{-10}$m^2$/s for electrically neutral tritium (H-3), 8.6{\times}10^{-14}$m^2$/s to 1.3{\times}10^{-12}$m^2$/s for cations (Cs, Sr, Ni), 1.2{\times}10^{-11}$m^2$/s to 9.5{\times}10^{-11}$m^2$/s for anions (I, Tc), and 3.0{\times}10^{-14} $m^2$/s to 1.8{\times}10^{-13}$m^2$/s $for actinides (U, Am), when tile dry densities were in the range of 1.2 Mg/㎥ to 1.8 Mg/㎥. The obtained results will be used in assessing the barrier properties of Kyungju bentonite as a buffer material of a repository in Korea.n Korea.

A bond-based peridynamic model has been shown to be capable of analyzing many of dynamic brittle fracture phenomena. However, there have been issued limitations on handling constitutive models of various materials. Especially, it assumes bonds act independently of each other, so that Poisson's ratio for 3D model is fixed as 1/4 as well as taking only account the bond stretching results in a volume change not a shear change. In this paper a state-based peridynamic model of dynamic brittle fracture is presented. The state-based peridynamic model is a generalized peridynamic model that is able to directly use a constitutive model from the standard theory. It permits the response of a material at a point to depend collectively on the deformation of all bonds connected to the point. Thus, the volume and shear changes of the material can be reproduced by the state-based peridynamic theory. For a linearly elastic solid, a plane stress model is introduced and the damage model suitable for the state-based peridynamic model is discussed. Through a convergence study under decreasing the peridynamic nonlocal region($\delta$-convergence), the dynamic fracture model is verified. It is also shown that the state-based peridynamic model is reliable for modeling dynamic crack propagatoin.

This research is to propose the reinforcing method and design code for the lateral behaviors of the abutment displacement induced from the rainfall infiltration on high landfill slope. First, to make the proper numerical analysis, in-situ soil (weathered granite soil) was taken, and the variance of strength parameters according to water content variance was examined by undrained direct shear test, furthermore, other soil parameters were calculated from the standard penetration test such as elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio etc,. Those parameters were used to calculate the lateral behavior of abutment by finite element method and the member force of pile in high landfill slope according to rainfall infiltration . From the results, the shoe displacement on abutment was calculated as 8.98cm, which is 3 times bigger than the allowable displacement, 3cm. To reinforce it, several reinforcing methods were selected and analyzed such as reinforced retaining wall, soil surcharge, pile reinforcing (5m enlargement, 3-line arrangement, 5m enlargement and 3-line arrangement). In case of 5m enlarged and 3-line arrangement piles, the lateral behavior of shoe showed lower value(2.26 cm) than allowable displacement.
Stone cultural heritages in Korea are mostly situated out door without any notable protection thus there are severe damage from chemical and biological weathering. This in turn, causes deformation and structural damage. To counter act this problem and to increase durability, various kinds of conservation materials are used in the conservation and restoration treatment. However, there are not many practical and technological experiment done on this subject. This paper attempts quantitative evaluation of effectiveness of ethylsilicate based resin for Namsan granite in Gyeongju. When two different materials with different ethylsilicate concentration were compared, the result indicated decrease of absorption and porosity with increase of ultrasonic velocities, uniaxial compressive strength, elastic constant, tensile strength and Poisson's ratio. In addition, comparison of physical characteristic of the conservation material resulted favorably toward ones with higher concentration of ethylsilicate. This is due to the ethylsilicates characteristic to fill the internal pores of stone. There is discolouration of stone surface after treatment with conservation material. This was more prominent with the product of higher ethylsilicate concentration.
Electrical resistivity and downhole seismic surveys were conducted together with bore investigations and well-logging to examine subsurface structures in small-scale landslides at Sinjindo-ri, Geunheung-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea in 2014. On the basis of the low N-values at depths of 5~7 m in borehole BH-2, downhole seismic and electrical dipole-dipole resistivity surveys were performed to delineate geological weak zones. The low-resistivity zones (<150 Ω·m) measure ~8 m in thickness and show a close depth correspondence to weathered soils consisting mainly of silty clays as identified from the bore investigations and well-logging data. Compared with weak zones in borehole BH-1, weak zones in BH-2 are characterized by lower densities (1.6~1.8 g/㎤) and resistivities (<150 Ω·m) and greater variation in Poisson's ratio. These observations can be explained by the presence of wet silty clays rich in weathered soil material that have resulted from heavy rainfall and rises in groundwater level. Downslope movements are probably caused by the sliding of wet clay that acts to reduce the strength of the weathered soil.
As the amount of construction wastes increase, reuse of recycled materials is being considered in research areas. While there are many experimental investigations focusing on development of mortar and concrete using the recycled materials, the studies regarding the fiber-reinforced cement composites (FRCCs) using recycled materials are still limited. In this paper, an experimental attempt has been made to investigate the effect of recycled fine aggregates and fly ash on the mechanical properties of PVA FRCCs. The cement and natural sand were respectively replaced by fly ash and recycled fine aggregates at two content levels, 25% and 50%. Ten types of PVA FRCCs mixes were fabricated and tested to investigate the flexural, compressive and direct tensile behaviors. The test results show that flexural, compressive and direct tensile strength were decreased with increase in fly ash content at all ages. In particular, flexural, compressive and direct tensile strengths of specimens, containing 50% recycled fine aggregates and 50% fly ash, showed the lowest values. The modulus of elasticity of specimens showed similar trend to the 28-day compressive strength. Poisson's ratio was increased with increase in fly ash and recycled fine aggregates content.
The effect of a $WO_3$ or $Ga_2O_3$ addition on the densification, phase evolution, optical reflectance, and elastic and dielectric properties of $Y_2O_3$-doped AlN ceramics sintered at $1800^{\circ}C$ for 3 h is investigated. The investigated compositions of the additives are 4.5 wt% $Y_2O_3$ (YA), 3.5 wt% $Y_2O_3$-1.0 wt% $Ga_2O_3$ (YGA), and 3.5 wt% $Y_2O_3$-1.0 wt% $WO_3$ (YWA). $YAlO_3$ and $Y_4Al_2O_9$ form as the secondary phases in all of the investigated compositions, whereas $W_2B$ appears additionally in the YWA. In the YGA, Ga is detected in the AlN grains, indicating that the dissolution of $Ga_2O_3$ into the AlN lattice occurs. The addition of $WO_3$ blackens the specimen more significantly than that of $Ga_2O_3$ does. In all of the investigated specimens, the linear shrinkage and the apparent density are above 20 percent and in the range of 3.34-3.37 $g/cm^3$, respectively. The elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, the dielectric constant, and the dielectric loss are in the ranges of 335-368 GPa, 0.146-0.237, 8.60-8.63, $2.65-3.95{\times}10^{-3}$, respectively. The sinterability and the properties of $Y_2O_3$-doped AlN ceramics are not much altered by the addition of $WO_3$ or $Ga_2O_3$.

This paper presents exact solutions for the free vibrations and buckling of rectangular plates having two opposite, simply supported edges subjected to linearly varying normal stresses causing pure in-plane moments, the other two edges being free. Assuming displacement functions which are sinusoidal in the direction of loading (x), the simply supported edge conditions are satisfied exactly. With this the differential equation of motion for the plate is reduced to an ordinary one having variable coefficients (in y). This equation is solved exactly by assuming power series in y and obtaining its proper coefficients (the method of Frobenius). Applying the free edge boundary conditions at y=0, b yields a fourth order characteristic determinant for the critical buckling moments and vibration frequencies. Convergence of the series is studied carefully. Numerical results are obtained for the critical buckling moments and some of their associated mode shapes. Comparisons are made with known results from less accurate one-dimensional beam theory. Free vibration frequency and mode shape results are also presented. Because the buckling and frequency parameters depend upon Poisson's ratio ( V ), results are shown for $0{\leq}v{\leq}0.5$, valid for isotropic materials.
Most of cervical abrasion and erosion lesions show gingival margin where the cavosurface angle is on cementum or dentin. Composite resin restoration of cervical lesion shrink toward enamel margin due to polymerization contraction. This shrinkage has clinical problem such as microleakage and secondary caries. Several methods to diminish contraction stress of composite resin restoration, such as modifying cavity form and building up restorations in several increments have been attempted. The purpose of this study was to compare polymerization contraction stress of composite resin in Class V cavity subjected to cavity forms and placement methods. In this study, finite element model of 5 types of Class V cavity was developed on computer tomogram of maxillary central incisor. The types are : 1) Box cavity 2) Box cavity with incisal bevel 3) V shape cavity 4) V shape cavity with incisal bevel 5) Saucer shape cavity. The placement methods are 1) Incisal first oblique incremental curing 2) Bulk curing. An FEM based program for light activated polymerization is not available. For simulation of curing dynamics, time dependent transient thermal conduction analysis was conducted on each cavity and each placement method. For simulation of polymerization shrinkage, thermal stress analysis was performed with each cavity and each placement method. The time-temperature dependent volume shrinkage rate, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio were determined in thermal conduction data. The results were as follows : 1. With all five Class V cavifies, the highest Von Mises stress at the composite-tooth interface occurred at gingival margin. 2. With box cavity, V shape cavity and saucer cavity, Von Mises stress at gingival margin of V shape cavity was lower than the others. And that of box cavity was lower than that of saucer cavity. 3. Preparing bevel at incisal cavosurface margin decreased the rate of stress development in early polymerization stage. 4. Preparing bevel at incisal cavosurface margin of V shape cavity increased the Von Mises stress at gingival margin, but decreased at incisal margin. 5. At incisal margin, stress development by bulk curing method was rapid at early stage. Stress development by first increment of incremental curing method was also rapid but lower than that by bulk curing method, however after second increment curing final stress was the same for two placement methods. 6. At gingival margin, stress development by incremental curing method was suddenly rapid at early stage of second increment curing, but final stress was the same for two placement methods.
